    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Campgrounds near Pembroke, North Carolina range from established RV parks to more secluded natural settings. The area includes options like Chalk Banks at Lumber River State Park and Legacy Farms Roughing It, offering tent sites, RV hookups, and limited cabin accommodations. Most facilities lie within a 30-mile radius of Pembroke, with several positioned along the I-95 corridor making them convenient stopover points for travelers. The surrounding region features a mix of state parks, private campgrounds, and designated recreation areas that provide varying levels of amenities from basic tent pads to full hookup RV sites.

Road conditions throughout the region generally remain accessible year-round, though some nature areas may have limited access during heavy rainfall, particularly around the Lumber River. The climate supports camping from spring through fall, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Many campgrounds require reservations, especially during peak seasons from late spring through early fall. Most established campgrounds provide water and electric hookups, while primitive camping areas may have vault toilets only. Cell service can be inconsistent in more remote camping areas, particularly at sites deeper within state parks. According to one visitor, "The campground itself is located outside of Lumberton and just a 20 minute or so drive from the heavy trafficked I95 highway corridor, but here you'll feel a million miles away from the hectic realities of urban life."

Campers report particular satisfaction with waterfront sites at parks like Lumber River State Park, where fishing and paddling opportunities enhance the camping experience. Several visitors mentioned the convenience of RV parks positioned near I-95 for overnight stays while traveling north or south. The region's mix of pine forests and river access creates diverse camping environments within relatively short distances. Reviewers note that campgrounds farther from the interstate tend to provide more peaceful experiences and natural settings, while those closer to major roads offer more amenities and easier access. During summer months, sites with shade receive consistently positive feedback due to the region's high temperatures and humidity. A camper wrote that Jones Lake State Park offers "very spacious sites that feel nicely private surrounded by evergreens, which is a nice relief in winter to see trees with leaves."

      Smith Lake Army RV Park

      Tidy, very well designed, basic

It’s not scenic or particularly private, but it’s clean, well designed, and pumping out shore power to combat the Iowa humidity

      LumberJack RV Park

      Top Notch RV Park

You cannot go wrong staying here! Great prices and excellent service!! We arrived right before dark, my husband turned off the truck and when he went to start it again, it would not start. The starter had went out in his truck, and we were still hooked to the camper, partially blocking the road in the RV park. The owners did not have a problem with our truck staying in the road through the night, and they were so helpful, and even took my husband to the auto parts store at 7:30 the next morning to get a new starter. Along with the owners, others staying in this campground was super friendly, and offering their help. This is our second stay in this RV park, and definitely won't be our last!

Anderson Creek County Park- Dispersed Camping

      Dispersed Camping? Not yet.

I got pretty excited when I saw this listed as offering dispersed campsites as my daughter lives nearby, and the only camping near her is Raven Rock, and for whatever odd reason, when you camp at NC state campgrounds, you have to be in the campground for the night at 9PM in peak season, and 6PM in off season, or you will be locked out! Unfortunately, at this phase of development, Anderson Creek County Park only offers ONE group campsite. Hopefully they will offer dispersed camping as they develop further, they are doing so in phases.

      Parkton Place

The Farm Feel on 30 acres

Car camping in my Subaru with a pop up tent just in case for two nights. This place is beautiful and relaxing. Called the owner to check in and ask questions. Heather was very brief and helpful. The animals are friendly. Just make sure to close the gates behind you and keep coffee away from the animals. If you’re an introvert this may be the place for you. If you into socializing go explore and talk to the animals and other people camping if they are interested in talking. It feels like home already.

      Double L Farms Campground

      Lumberton NC

Our host, Brain and Lisa are great. Brain was there when we arrived to make sure we had everything we needed for hook up and helped with parking. Lisa gave very good directions to their location. Very peaceful, loved the animals. Will stay here again.

Pedro's Campground at South of the Border

      Great Stop!

This well known roadside attraction, South of the Border, has a hidden gem of a campground! They have a lot of sites, from back-ins to pull-throughs, full hook-ups, nightly rates from about $49 including tax (with discounts, and they offer a few). Nice sites with picnic tables and grills, we saw three bathhouses (clean!), and a coin-operated laundry. Entire campground is gated with security, and there are restaurants, shops, and gas stations. Quiet, fun, just off I-95 at the SC/NC border.

      Spacious Skies Sandy Run

      Great Campground for a Stopover

While this is a Spacious Skies Campground with all of the SS stuff (playground, bounce pad, pool, dog run, etc) it doesn't quite have the SS vibe.  Felt a little more like a long term campground.  There are 55 sites. While we were there, I counted 38 campers that I'm almost sure were long term and 5 that seemed short term like us.  The only thing that put me off about this though was a couple of sites seem to keep their dogs mostly outside in dog fences.

The campground is appropriately named (Sandy Run) because is it mostly sand.  There is at least a half mile sand road to get back to the campground.  All of the roads in it are sand, though you can tell the base is gravel.  The campsites themselves are mostly sand, with thick gravel to park on, nice concrete pads with picnic tables to sit at and a fire ring at each site.  There was a very nice short hiking trail that went around a small lake.

All of the staff was super friendly and helpful.  The campground and sites are clean and well maintained.  The bath and laundry house are also clean.

We had the only non-FHU site, so I had to use the dump station, which was easy access and well maintained.

The campground is close to I95 with easy access, but far enough away that you can't hear the highway noise.  It is right next to the Fayetteville airport, but being a regional, it is not very busy.

Bottom line, I would definitely stay here again, but we have family in the area.

      Jones Lake Family Campground

      Great stay at Jones Lake

The sites are clean, spacious, and beautifully wooded, just far enough apart to feel private while still being close to the trails and lake access. Bathrooms and showers were clean with great hot water, the picnic areas were tidy, and the whole park had a natural feel that makes it easy to unwind. It’s a great spot for families, dogs, and anyone who wants a quiet getaway in a beautiful setting.

    Guide to Pembroke

The camping sites near Pembroke, North Carolina range from working farms with farm animals to state park facilities along the Lumber River. Most campgrounds in this area sit at low elevations between 100-200 feet above sea level, contributing to the region's characteristic coastal plain ecosystem. Summer nights typically maintain temperatures above 65°F, while winter evenings can drop below freezing between December and February.

    What to do

Fishing at riverside sites: The Lumber River at Chalk Banks — Lumber River State Park offers excellent fishing opportunities with easy access from the campground. "The Lumber River is right here, so fishing and canoeing/kayaking are popular activities. There is a hiking trail here as well," notes camper Marvin D.

Farm animal interactions: At Double L Farms Campground, campers can spend time with various farm animals. One reviewer shared, "If you have a family with small children, they will love the horses, chickens, guinea hens, and the couple of friendly cats and dogs that they own." Another camper added, "We absolutely loved the cows, horses, donkeys, chickens, guinea hens, ducks, turkey, cats, dogs and other animals we came across during our stay."

Hiking woodland trails: Explore the nature trails available at Princess Ann Access. A visitor mentioned, "These sites have a bit of hike-in required, in that you can't drive up to them," making it perfect for those who enjoy a short walk to more secluded sites. The nearby trails offer pleasant woodland hiking routes along the river.

ATV adventures: For more active recreation, Outback ATV Park provides extensive trail systems for off-road enthusiasts. "So many trails you'll never ride the same one twice. Swimming hole is nice and spring fed," reports Charli R. The park hosts regular events for ATV riders throughout the year.

    What campers like

Privacy and space: The campgrounds near Pembroke offer sites with good separation. At Chalk Banks, "Tent camping sites, 9-10-11, sit WAY back in the woods, so its like almost like having your own campground. TONS of forage wood here." Another camper at Princess Ann mentioned, "We had a fantastic time last week! We also had the privilege of having the park COMPLETELY to ourselves...the ranger confirmed that we were the only campers that night!"

Clean facilities: Campers frequently comment on the well-maintained bathrooms and showers. At Lumberton I-95 KOA, visitors noted, "The bathroom, the grounds were very clean. Walked trail behind campground. Wi-Fi is excellent." Another reviewer shared, "This is a clean KOA with good showers. The facilities are well maintained."

River access: Proximity to the Lumber River ranks high with campers. One visitor to Princess Ann described, "Our particular site, PA 7, is one of two right on the river's edge, across from the Naked Landing trail. The river is nice to swim in after a hot summer's day, although the bottom is quite squishy. It's a good area to fish or use small watercraft."

Stargazing: The rural location offers excellent night sky viewing. A camper at Princess Ann — Lumber River State Park shared, "You can see tons of stars here at night, it is amazing! It's lovely to sit by the water and look at the night sky."

    What you should know

Gate hours: Some parks have strict entry/exit times. A camper at Chalk Banks warned, "Word to the wise, when the website says the park closes at 'posted times', they mean 9pm. We know this because we got there at 9:05 and the gate was locked tight." Parks typically provide gate codes to registered campers.

Limited supplies nearby: Preparation is important as many campgrounds have limited nearby stores. At Chalk Banks, "There is no general store nearby so bring wood and supplies in with you." Most camping areas require a 15-30 minute drive to reach the nearest convenience store.

Seasonal noise: Wildlife can create noticeable sounds, especially during spring and summer. One camper mentioned, "Also, there's a lot of owls here at night. If you are a light sleeper you may want to consider ear plugs. It's lovely, but the owls do get kind of rowdy at points making a racket."

Road noise: Campgrounds near I-95 experience highway sounds. A reviewer at Lumberton KOA noted, "I would give this campground 5 stars if it was further away from I-95. To get to it, you get off the highway and loop around about 1-2 miles, but you cross back over I-95 and it is situated right next to it, so there is a lot of road noise."

    Tips for camping with families

Farm experiences: Children particularly enjoy the animal interactions at Double L Farms. One family reported, "In fact, our daughters thought the farm animals were the best part of our camping trip!" Another mentioned, "In the morning Brian took our two year old on a tour of their amazing farm — horses, cows, ducks, chickens, and all the tractors of our toddlers' dreams."

Swimming options: During hot months, look for campgrounds with water access. At Outback ATV Park, "Swimming hole is nice and spring fed." Many families appreciate this feature during summer camping trips when temperatures regularly exceed 85°F.

Bathroom proximity: When camping with small children, consider site location relative to facilities. One reviewer advised selecting sites that aren't too far from bathrooms: "The bath house was a decent walk, but nothing ridiculous." Most state park campgrounds have one central bathroom facility.

Playgrounds: Several campgrounds offer play areas for children. Campers at Spacious Skies Sandy Run noted the "kid's playground" as a welcome amenity, while other nearby campgrounds feature similar facilities to help keep children entertained.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Lumber River State Park, "The right hand side of the campground is set up for RVs (pull through sites). The left hand side is for tent camping." Understanding the campground layout helps with selecting appropriate sites.

Hookup availability: Different campgrounds offer varying levels of services. At Bass Lake Campground, visitors find "Full hookups," with one camper noting, "Very well kept and CLEAN! The showers and bathrooms were spotless." Most RV sites in the area offer at least water and electric hookups.

Road conditions: Some access roads require careful navigation. A visitor to Little Pee Dee State Park observed, "Road to campground is horrible! Very narrow, trees hanging over it, dirt, but huge holes! Obviously needs to be graded." RVers with larger rigs should call ahead to verify access.

Sand management: Many campgrounds in the region have sandy sites. A visitor to Spacious Skies Sandy Run mentioned, "The roads to and from the site could use a little bit of work but overall not a big deal. Loose dirt but fairly level." Consider bringing mats to reduce sand tracking into your RV.
