Paddlers and anglers find direct access to the Lumber River at this state park campground, which sits about half a mile from the water through pine woods. The facility divides into two sections: RV sites with full hookups on the right side and tent platforms on the left, with sites 9-11 positioned deep in the woods for maximum privacy.
The campground operates with minimal infrastructure—one vault toilet and a single water spigot serve all campers. Rangers lock the entrance gate from 9 PM to 8 AM but provide access codes to registered guests. Staff maintain the grounds regularly and keep the single restroom clean. Cell service works reliably for major carriers, though campers must drive about 10 minutes to the Speedway gas station for firewood purchases.
"Decently far off the main road so it's quiet," notes Joe S., and multiple visitors confirm the spacious sites rarely fill except on July 4th. The hiking trail leads to river access where kayakers launch and anglers try their luck. Abundant fallen wood provides free fuel for campfires.
Campers seeking additional options in the region can explore places to camp around Wagram. Bring all supplies since no camp store operates on-site, and expect a no-frills experience focused on river recreation and forest solitude.
Description
Located in Columbus, Robeson, Scotland, and Hoke counties 60 miles south of Fayetteville, Lumber River State Park has two access areas located about 1 hour from each other: Princess Ann and Chalk Banks. Possibilities for paddling on this 115-mile river are extraordinary. An abundance of wildlife and plant life, including the belted kingfisher and the rare Carolina bogmint, helped Lumber River earn federal designation as a National Wild and Scenic River, the only blackwater river in the state to have that honor.
