Central New York's Finger Lakes region surrounds Camillus with numerous camping options at elevations between 400-1,000 feet. The area features glacially-formed lakes with distinctive water colors ranging from blue-green to turquoise. Most campgrounds around Camillus remain open from May through mid-October, with July and August being peak reservation periods.
What to do
Hiking opportunities: Green Lakes State Park Campground contains miles of trails suitable for all skill levels. "There are 2 Great Lakes to hike around with awesome views. Fishing and boat rental if you want to be closer to the water," notes camper Kelly J. The main trail system offers more than hiking. "You can rent a kayak and enjoy the beautiful lake. There are miles of trails to explore," adds Cindy H.
Water activities: At Fillmore Glen State Park Campground, visitors enjoy natural water features beyond swimming beaches. "The 60 camp sites are in private areas protected by wooded areas... Activities include hiking on many trails, fishing swimming, and what I thought was unique was the spring fed swimming pool," writes Brian O. The gorge itself offers impressive scenery. "Beautiful little park. Wonderful trails, swimming pool, and activities for kids," reports Gabrielle C.
Recreation facilities: Many campgrounds near Camillus maintain athletic fields and family recreation areas. "The beach area is wide and shallow in most areas. In close proximity to the store and snack shop (ICE CREAM)," shares Sheri S. about Green Lakes. Outdoor activities include options beyond the usual camping pursuits. "Golfing is also available on site!" adds the same reviewer.
What campers like

On site they have swimming, boat launch, and (I think) a playground," states Harry H. Campers appreciate the larger setting as well. "This was a perfect weekend getaway. Kayaking in Cayuga Lake was not lacking some beautiful views," reports Laura Nicole A.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain high standards for bathrooms and shower areas. "Bathrooms are very clean and close to all campsites. Kids loved the park and swimming in the waterfall beach," writes Charyssa G. about Fillmore Glen State Park. Specific improvements get noticed. "The bathrooms have been remodeled and most are private with a toilet, shower and sink which makes this a wonderful family campground," notes Sheri S.

No swimming allowed but can use motor boats, canoes, kayaks, etc. Very reasonable rates. Pleasant staff," reports Terri P. Many campgrounds in the region allow pets with standard leash policies.
What you should know
Site privacy varies: Campground layouts differ significantly across the region. "We were at site 35 (in the middle section) and there were 2 large groups on either side of us who came for the weekend. The grassy field is great for kiddos to run-amok," notes Shari G. At Oneida Shores County Park, "Campground is recently paved. Lots of geese, therefore lots of goose poop. Sites are small and close together. Nice wooded setting on the lake," explains Shawn.
Seasonal considerations: Each season brings different camping conditions. "This was our first trip in our camper. This was in June. It was muddy. The beach was nice and clean," reports Sara H. about Oneida Shores. Weather impacts both comfort and activities. "I can't say much about the amenities since we camped in the off season (really bummed not to rent a boat), but the trails around the lake are great!" notes Chelsea B.
Reservation importance: The most popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially on weekends. "During the main season, this place is nuts! You'll definitely need to plan ahead and make reservations if you plan to be here on the weekends during the silly season. Bonus: Prices are lower on weekdays and you get a reduced rate for your second night, too," advises Shari G.
Tips for camping with families
Safety considerations: Water features require supervision. "The hiking includes an easy 3.1 mile loop with much shade around two glacier formed turquoise lakes. The beach area is wide and shallow in most areas," states Sheri S. about Green Lakes. Designated swimming areas offer safer options. "The swimming is only allowed in certain parts and there are some pretty steep drop offs so watch the kids close," advises Kim B.
Playground accessibility: Pleasant Lake Campground provides family-friendly amenities. "This is a fantastic place for kids and adults. There are rent, RV sites and cabins. The RV sites are spacious enough that you don't feel like you are too close. A beautiful private lake for fishing, swimming and other water sports," explains Victoria B. Many campgrounds position playgrounds centrally. "Nice campground very quiet due to lots of rain this year I can see where it might get crowded in the fields but there are a couple nice loops clean bathrooms great free showers," reports Jeff A.
Recreational planning: Structured activities keep children engaged. "There is a camp store, laundry room, recreation room, playgrounds and much more," mentions Cindy H. Families should consider campground event schedules. "Special events that the family will enjoy. The people that run the campground and the seasonal folks are the BEST!" adds Victoria B.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Woonton Family Farms offers a different camping experience for RVers. "We had an excellent stay at the farm of the Woonton Family Farms with our RV, it was a cozy and beautiful campsite with personal attention of the owner. We had a great campfire, fresh blackberries and the option of canoeing," shares Willemien V. RV sites across the region vary in services. "This state park campground is one of the few that offer full hook ups," notes Sheri S.
Site dimensions: Many campgrounds accommodate various RV sizes. "I found this location to have very clean sites with plenty of amenities. Had no issues with the Wi-Fi watching Bills games and play a few video games," writes Ryan G. about Pleasant Lake Campground. Sites with more space provide comfort. "We stayed in the 800 loop along the tree line. Sites were very spacious!" reports Colleen M.
WiFi reliability: Internet access varies across campgrounds. "Had no issues with the Wi-Fi watching Bills games and play a few video games," notes Ryan G. about Pleasant Lake Campground. Technology needs should factor into campsite selection. "We still endured 4 more hours of multiple mowers going over the same areas multiple times. Honestly think they were messing with us at that point," warns Chelsea B. about maintenance disruptions affecting setup.
