Aguirre Spring Recreation Area and Campground welcomes pets throughout its desert campground situated at the base of the Organ Mountains. The Las Cruces KOA accommodates dogs with tent sites, RV spots, and pet-friendly cabins, making it versatile for travelers with animals of various sizes. Both campgrounds maintain standard leash policies requiring pets to be restrained at all times while outside vehicles or camping units. The area contains multiple dispersed camping options on BLM land, including Sierra Vista and Baylor Canyon Road sites where dogs can explore more freely. Campers note that while facilities at dispersed sites are minimal, the pet-friendly atmosphere compensates for the lack of amenities. Most sites have fire rings and level parking, with regulations focusing primarily on waste management rather than strict pet limitations.

Hiking trails surrounding the Organ Mountains provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with the Baylor Pass West Trailhead offering immediate access to pet-friendly paths from its dispersed camping area. The campground parking lot accommodates various camping styles from car camping to small RVs, with pets welcome throughout. Weather considerations are significant when camping with animals in this area, as summer temperatures can exceed 100°F with limited shade at most sites. Sierra Vista's dispersed camping provides better morning shade for pets with the mountains blocking early sun. During spring, winds can be substantial across exposed camping areas, requiring secure tie-outs for smaller dogs. No nearby veterinary facilities exist within immediate proximity, so pet owners should travel with basic first aid supplies and water storage capabilities.

      Hacienda RV Resort

      Hacienda RV Resort, NM

Located in Las Cruces New Mexico, Hacienda RV resort is conveniently situated right off of interstate 10. Their main office is closed currently due to COVID precautions, but they are still very accommodating. The sites are small, but have everything you need with level concrete pads and full hook ups. They have a large laundry room. Make sure you use the ones closest to the door (on the right) because they are newer and don’t leave your clothes soaking wet. The dog park is large and has several entrances- it also provides waste bags and a garbage can, which is a plus. The bathrooms are private and include a toilet and shower- clean!!

We only stayed one night but this was a convenient location or far off the highway. Bathroom was clean and staff was nice. Large clean dog park. Nice views of the city. Some sites back up to the view and they also behave a path and pier pit with a view. Looks like they are making improvements to the park.

      Las Cruces KOA

Beautiful Mountain Views, Starry Skies - Wish We Could Stay Longer!

We arrived after dark to the Las Cruces KOA.  The park was about 1/2 full and the sites were spacious, clean and had both gravel and cement area for parking.  The skies at night were clear and the location of the camp, set on a hilltop, was perfect for seeing stars and the distant city lights.  During the daytime, the park has beautiful views of the mountains nearby.  Some of the sites are considered premium and they had the best mountain views and a patio area and outdoor fitpit.

The dog run area was exceptionally clean, nice and spacious for our two dog.  The dog area has a patch of grass in the middle and then surrounded by decompressed granite.  I preferred this to the dog parks that are all grass.  It was very clean and had climbing structures for the pups.  The restroom near the dog park was sparkling clean with marble floors.  I popped into the gift shop/welcome desk and there were a lot of items for sale, crafts, food items, etc.  I can see spending a longer visit here and exploring the town of Las Cruces and the nearby Medilla area wineries.  The location is convenient if you are traveling on I-10 and feels very safe and secure.

(This is the desert , so maybe expected) 30/50 amp, water & sewer. Free WiFi and Cable TV No dog park. No pool There is a convenience store and grocery store.

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park Campground

Not for the 4th of July, unless you just escaped Hell

Oddly this popped up in my feed as a late 4th of July choice.  Good God, no.  I like heat and live in New Mexico.  Northern new Mexico, in the mountains, where no one needs air conditioning.

Cooler times of the year, like mid-winter, I do recommend the area, particularly Dog Canyon, a great winter or early spring hike.

But for mid-summer?  No, unless you're an infernal demon it's a bit warm those months.

    Guide to Organ

Dispersed camping options near Organ, New Mexico extend beyond the immediate vicinity of the Organ Mountains with several BLM-managed sites scattered throughout the area. The region sits at approximately 4,000-5,000 feet elevation, with the Organ Mountains themselves rising to over 9,000 feet. Temperatures can fluctuate drastically between day and night, with summer nights cooling down 30-40 degrees from daytime highs.

    What to do

Mountain biking and hiking trails: Sierra Vista offers direct access to popular trails for mountain bikers and hikers of all skill levels. "The views of the mountain ridge as the sun comes up is awesome. The stars from here are pretty great too! There are a couple pull off sites in a groomed road that leads to a trailhead," notes Morgan Z. about Sierra Vista.

Astronomical observation: The dark skies above the Organ Mountains provide excellent stargazing conditions during new moon phases. At Baylor Pass West Trailhead Dispersed, one camper observed: "Good hiking trail but small parking lot... Beautiful view and generally quiet, albeit windy. Very easy to access from the road with my 2WD car."

Sunrise photography: The Organ Mountains create dramatic silhouettes at dawn with excellent photo opportunities. "We were able to move the picnic table that's under each awning to side so that we could set up our two person tent with more protection from the rain. Unbeatable views with very close protection from the bathrooms," shared one visitor at Aguirre Spring Recreation Area.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Campers appreciate the natural spacing at many dog friendly campgrounds near Organ, NM. A reviewer at Oregan Wilderness Dispersed notes: "Lots of dispersed sites but looks like a very popular area... Spots are pretty well spaced out with lots of vegetation inbetween."

Proximity to White Sands National Park: The short drive to White Sands National Park is a major draw. "What a nice place to stay. I like it so much I stayed for 8 days. Very close to White Sands NP and to the city," reports Karla L. from Sierra Vista.

Clean facilities at established campgrounds: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Organ Mountain maintain high cleanliness standards. At Leasburg Dam State Park Campground, "The camping spots have a (mostly) level concrete pad to park your rig on, be it trailer, van or tent. We had water, electricity, fire pit and an Adobe structure covering the picnic table."

    What you should know

Wind exposure: Wind patterns in the Organ Mountains area can be severe, particularly during spring and fall. A camper at Las Cruces KOA observed: "Sunset was great... Took a short drive to La Mesilla and the farmers market in Las Cruces—definitely recommend both. White Sands is also not too far if you're up for a day trip."

Road conditions to dispersed sites: Many of the dispersed camping options require careful driving on rough roads. At Baylor Canyon Road, "The road is pretty rocky, take it slow and you'll be good though. 4wd not needed, I managed fine in a 2wd Escape, wouldn't attempt going too far in with low clearance as some rocks are pretty big."

Limited cell service: Cell reception varies widely throughout the region. While some areas have surprisingly good coverage, others are complete dead zones. At Oregan Wilderness Dispersed, a camper advised: "Road and camp site were good...I would definitely try to get spots here before Sierra Vista or Baylor Pass trailhead as you don't have to deal with the traffic."

    Tips for camping with families

Accessible hiking options: Several trails near pet-friendly Organ Mountain campsites offer child-friendly hiking experiences. "Aguirre Springs Campground was even better than expected! The views were stunning and there was plenty of space and privacy at each site. Our favorite spot during our NM/AZ roadtrip!" shares Caitlyn B.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Dawn and dusk offer opportunities to spot local wildlife with children. At Baylor Canyon Rd Spur, BLM, Free, a camper noted: "Heard coyote's howling pretty nearby around 1:30am, and in the area again at 3am-ish. There was also lots of scat around, pretty large piles, thinking it's cow as there's several cattle ranches very close by."

Weather preparedness: Temperature fluctuations require proper planning with children. "I would stay here again! Dripping Springs' historical site is bear by too," mentions a camper about Sierra Vista, highlighting the educational opportunities nearby that families can incorporate into their camping trip.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many dispersed sites near Organ Mountains require careful positioning for larger vehicles. A camper at Sierra Vista - Back Side Dispersed advised: "I got up the top trail fine in my f-150, it is kinda sketchy though so be careful, but the views up top are great, spaced out a lot better."

Optimal arrival timing: Arriving early to secure suitable RV spots is essential, especially on weekends. "Able to get our 39' toy hauler into this location without any issues," confirms an RVer at Oregan Wilderness Dispersed, suggesting larger rigs can access some sites with proper planning.

Water conservation strategies: With no water hookups at dispersed dog-friendly campgrounds near Organ Mountain, RVers must plan accordingly. "There are 55 total campsites here. First come, first serve. Smaller RVs only as a winding road takes you here and the spots are small," advises Julie F. about Aguirre Spring Recreation Area.
