Best RV Parks & Resorts near Short Hills, NJ

Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers 90 RV sites with water, electric, and dump station access just 30 minutes from Short Hills, New Jersey. This park provides 30/50 amp service and accommodates big rigs, though it lacks sewer hookups at individual sites. Nearby, NWS Earle RV Park in Colts Neck operates seasonally from April through mid-November with full hookup sites including 50 amp service on level concrete pads. For those willing to travel slightly farther, Mountain Top RV Park features newly upgraded infrastructure with 50 amp electrical service and full hookups on spacious sites. "The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup," notes one RV camper who stayed at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, which offers electric and water connections but no sewer hookups at individual sites.

Cell service varies significantly across these rv parks, with several campers reporting spotty coverage at more rural locations. Most rv campgrounds in the region require reservations, particularly during summer and fall foliage seasons when availability becomes limited. Navigation deserves careful attention, as some RV parks have challenging access points. One reviewer cautioned about a "hairpin turn and steep hill" when approaching certain campgrounds with larger motorhomes. Dump stations are available at most parks, though their placement sometimes creates traffic flow issues for bigger rigs. Pet policies differ between facilities - most welcome pets with standard restrictions, but Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites explicitly prohibits pets despite offering full hookup sites. Propane service is limited, so RV travelers should plan to arrive with tanks filled or know where refill stations are located.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites

    Quiet, spacious, no frills

We stayed in site #1 with our 21' travel trailer. In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean. Big rig spots are further back (around site 6-9 or so). 9 sites total & they are often booked, so need to do so in advance. Free beach just a few moments' walk down the road. Close to shore towns & many restaurants. Plenty of space for kids to play in the field/grass area. TONS of geese everywhere though. Pets are NOT allowed (but they'd probably help w the geese problem). You get access to the showers with a key card and when you check in, but I don't have anything to report as I used the bathroom/shower in our trailer. Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well. Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains.

Guide to Short Hills

RV camping near Short Hills, New Jersey offers convenient access to multiple campgrounds within driving distance. The region features rolling hills with elevations between 400-600 feet and experiences four distinct seasons with humid summers and cold winters. Access roads to many campgrounds may narrow considerably in the final approach, requiring careful navigation for larger rigs during the peak season from May through October.

What to do

Explore waterfront areas: Campers staying at Liberty Harbor RV Park can easily reach nearby water attractions. "Two ferries that run to Manhattan. Path train is a 12 minute walk away that will take you to manhatten. Jersey city has a lot of restaurants and bars walking distance," notes Karen S. The marina restaurant provides additional entertainment options.

Visit urban attractions: From Skyline RV Camp - Waterfront, travelers can access major city landmarks. However, location changes have affected views. "Be advised that Skyline RV Camp has moved to: 50 Noble St, Brooklyn, NY 11222... There no longer is a waterfront view of the NYC skyline when camping at Skyline RV," warns John T.

Hike local trails: The woodland areas surrounding Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offer extensive hiking opportunities. "We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful," shares Paulene-Amanda M. The reservation features multiple trails varying in difficulty, with Headley Overlook providing scenic vistas.

What campers like

Privacy and space: Campsites at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation provide ample room between neighbors. "The sites are spaced well and have a nice bonus of large fire rings set back in the woods a bit from the pad that you park on," reports Greg S. Most sites feature paved and level surfaces surrounded by mature trees.

Convenient location: Tri-State RV Park serves as a strategic base for exploring multiple states. "Easy on, easy off. Lots of pull through sites. Next to grocery store. CLEAN bathrooms, showers, laundry. Perfect for an overnight stop," writes BENdejo. The campground sits at a junction providing access to three states.

Updated facilities: Renovations at Mountain Top RV Park have enhanced the camping experience. "The newly upgraded camp infrastructure elevated the stay, providing amenities for comfort and entertainment. The family-friendly atmosphere was evident through the thoughtfully designed property, including an updated pool, playground, game room, and a brand-new pickleball court," shares Jason G.

What you should know

Military camping restrictions: Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites offers full hookups but restricts pet access. "Pets are NOT allowed (but they'd probably help w the geese problem)," notes Jessica D. Reservations often fill months in advance during summer season.

Highway noise levels: Some campgrounds experience significant traffic noise. "While the staff is very friendly and polite you are basically in a old parking lot right below the freeway. Very easy to get on & off the highway but loud highway noise almost all night," reports Rick G. about Tri-State RV Park.

Seasonal operation limitations: Several campgrounds operate on limited schedules. NWS Earle RV Park operates "April 1 to November 15" according to their listing information. During off-season, alternate camping options become severely limited, with many facilities closing entirely.

Tips for camping with families

Scout playground facilities: Campgrounds vary widely in their child-friendly amenities. "They have a small playground that would be better suited for older children, and there's also a nice lounge room with games, a pool table, a tv and puzzles/board games," mentions @HomegrownRV about Mountain Top RV Park.

Consider site location: At Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South, site selection impacts the experience. "Sites are kinda close together but it was fairly quiet even though it was full," reports Mary H. Seasonal sites occupy significant portions of some campgrounds, potentially affecting atmosphere and noise levels.

Plan for connectivity challenges: Cell service varies substantially throughout the region. "Cell service is awful for AT&T and our T-Mobile gateway. Had to move to a new site to get away from the trees to get starlink connectivity," shares Nick E. about Timothy Lake South. Families relying on connected devices should research signal strength beforehand.

Tips from RVers

Navigation considerations: Large RVs require careful planning when accessing certain campgrounds. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze," advises Joe R. about Liberty Harbor RV Park.

Hookup placement challenges: Sewer and water connections may present unexpected difficulties. "Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains," reports Jessica D. about Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center.

Limited winter options: RVers seeking year-round camping face limited choices. "Open during the winter. Easy on, easy off," notes BENdejo about Tri-State RV Park, making it one of the few accessible winter camping locations within reasonable distance of Short Hills.
