Best RV Parks & Resorts near Plainfield, NJ

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides 90 RV sites with water and electric hookups in what is essentially a marina parking lot. Sites are set extremely close together with minimal space between rigs. One visitor noted, "Sites had electric and water and were in a fenced off section of the marina parking area. It was a little loud with city noises, but exactly what we expected being so close." Skyline RV Camp offers 28 RV sites with electric hookups including 50-amp service, though multiple reviewers mention the campground has relocated from its original waterfront location. Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort in Sussex accommodates big rigs with full hookups including water, electric, sewer, and 50-amp service, operating seasonally from April through October.

For RV travelers approaching the area, several parks enforce seasonal availability constraints with many closing between November and April. Most RV parks near Plainfield provide dump stations on-site, though Liberty Harbor's is reported to have access difficulties during busy checkout periods. Cell service remains strong throughout the region's RV parks due to proximity to urban centers. Several locations enforce strict rules regarding generator use, with most prohibiting generators entirely. A camper wrote about Liberty Harbor: "It's basically a gravel parking lot with water and electricity. There is a dump station, but not the easiest to use." Pet policies vary by location, with most allowing pets but some military installations like Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites prohibiting them.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

Pros Great People beautiful surroundings Nice Bathrooms Quiet and Peaceful Accessible Nice Pool Every store U could Need is in about 15 mins Away Not Alot of Stupid rules just Be respectful Pet friendly

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Guide to Plainfield

RV sites near Plainfield, New Jersey offer camping options with varying levels of accessibility to urban attractions. Located in central New Jersey, Plainfield sits at approximately 95 feet above sea level with a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot summers and mild winters. Most campgrounds in the area experience seasonal closures from November through April due to regional weather patterns.

What to do

Statue of Liberty access: Liberty Harbor RV Park provides convenient access to ferry service. "My wife visited Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The sites had electric and water and were in a fenced off section of tue marina parking area," notes Kevin A. A different camper mentioned, "Very plain & functional, no frills but right on the harbor & on the very edge of Jersey City, close to a ferry & the train that takes u across to New York City."

Mountain hiking trails: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers multiple hiking options through wooded terrain. "We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful," reports Paulene-Amanda M. Another camper states, "Make sure to visit Headley overlook and hike the awesome trials that surround the campsites!"

Farm animal interactions: For families seeking camping with animal experiences, Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort integrates farm animals into their camping experience. "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," shares Faith D. Another camper adds, "Playground, hayride, animals to feed (goats, chickens, donkey and pony)."

What campers like

Easy urban access: Campers value the strategic location of Jersey City's Skyline RV Camp for Manhattan access. "The area feels safe and is pedestrian friendly, even at night (we were there Halloween night and we took our kids out trick-or-treating just outside the gate)," reports Amy P., who adds, "There's a metro station within a 10-minute walk."

Secluded woodland sites: Many campers appreciate the peaceful setting of Jefferson's Mahlon Dickerson Reservation. "The campground is clean, paved nicely and well run. Our site is easily the nicest- all the way in the back with only one neighbor. It is so quiet here," explains Greg S., who values the seclusion. Another review notes, "The campsites are paved and mostly level. They are wooded and large."

Large gathering spaces: Timothy Lake South accommodates groups with spacious sites. "Sites are large in most cases. All have fire pit and picnic table, some have bbq grill too," mentions Robert M. Another camper specified, "We parked backwards in our site to buddy up with our friends... the campsites really were a lot bigger but we didn't care bc we wanted to share the living space."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Mobile connectivity varies significantly across campgrounds. At Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South, one camper reported, "Cell service is awful for AT&T and our T-Mobile gateway. Had to move to a new site to get away from the trees to get starlink connectivity." Another noted, "The cell service for most providers is practically non-existent."

Seasonal operations: Most RV campsites near Plainfield, New Jersey operate on limited seasonal schedules. NWS Earle RV Park runs from "April 1 to November 15," while Timothy Lake South operates from "May 1 to October 31." Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort maintains a similar schedule from "April 1 - October 31."

Restricted alcohol policies: Several military-affiliated campgrounds maintain alcohol restrictions. Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites prohibits pets but allows alcohol, while Range 14 Camp restricts both alcohol and pets, creating varying policy environments across campgrounds.

Tips for camping with families

Playground accessibility: At Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort, families should note location challenges. "The office, playground, dog park, pool, laundry are located at the top of the hill. Camping spots are downhill, a good distance from the office and amenities," warns Coffee&Camping T., highlighting the elevation changes families must navigate.

Weekend activities: Timothy Lake South offers structured weekend programming. "My kids explored the playground and found it sufficient," notes Ashley O. Another camper explained, "We get a feeling it's a great place to take a family for that weekend camping experience."

Location safety considerations: For urban camping options, NWS Earle RV Park provides secure military oversight. "Small campground W/ 8 spaces in the main area and 7 in an adjacent area. All spaces are level concrete With fill hookups and attached concrete patio," explains Jeffrey, who adds that the location is "only an hour from Manhattan & 20 more minutes from the shore."

Tips from RVers

Hookup positioning challenges: Several RV sites have unusual utility placement configurations. At NWS Earle RV Park, "Power is at the far back & sewage is in the middle (left to right). A longer camper will be parked over the sewage connection," warns Jeffrey. At Pleasant Acres, a camper noted, "One downfall is you have to drive to the trash bin it is way too far to walk."

Navigation cautions: For big rig drivers, Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort presents unique challenges. "When you leave you have to drive the wrong way in the campground because of the low hanging trees the correct direction," cautions Bill B. Liberty Harbor RV Park similarly requires careful navigation: "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze."

Sewer system variations: Waste disposal arrangements differ significantly among campgrounds. At Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, "The dump station has a flush hose point," according to a reviewer, while another camper reported at Pleasant Acres, "Trash is located off site in a pullout on the road you drive in on."
