What to do
Kayaking at Round Valley Reservoir: The 2,350-acre reservoir provides clear water conditions for paddlers. "The water is crystal clear, the area is clean. We just filtered the water from the reservoir instead which tasted a million times better than the well water," writes James R. about Round Valley State Park Campground.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Access multiple segments within Harriman State Park. "A stones throw from NYC this beautiful area combines Lake Welch and Harriman State Park. This camp ground is laid back away from the busy activity of the big city. If you want to get away and relax you can come here to walk, swim and camp," notes Brian O. about Beaver Pond Campground.
Mountain summit camping: For advanced hikers, trek to primitive sites with panoramic views. "Stonetown Circular trail is a 11 mile medium/high difficulty loop trail. This site is about 2 miles into the hike. This is a great spot to set up camp because it has a wide area and an amazing view. You will find the site right next to the American Flag at the top of the mountain," explains Ethan K.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Many campers appreciate the separation between sites at certain campgrounds. "The campsites are paved and mostly level. They are wooded and large. Water and electric hookups and a dump station," notes Jeff W. about Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.
Free boats on Great Divide Lake: Complimentary watercraft enhance camping value. "Kids had lots of fun on the free kayaks and pool. Staff was friendly and helpful. Campgrounds have lots of hills so be prepared to hike up and down," reports Jojo P. about Great Divide Campground.
Rustic cabins for mixed comfort levels: Some locations offer simple structures with basic amenities. "These cabins are VERY rustic, four walls, a cot, and a fridge. You still feel like you are 'roughing it' but with the convenience of a fridge. Absolutely zero phone service (for T-Mobile) which was AMAZING," shares Sara P.
What you should know
Bear activity awareness: Wildlife encounters require proper preparation. "Welcome to Bear Mountain grumbles the park ranger as he sits in complete darkness! He is in his ranger hut, checking in the late evening arrivals to the campground... He offers us a highlighted map to our site, wishes us a good stay, and gives us the run down on bear activity in the area," warns Steve W.
Popular trails through campsites: Some areas experience daytime foot traffic. "Campgaw doesn't seem to offer much in terms of a camping experience. The sites themselves are fairly close to the road and there are super popular hiking trails that run right through all the camps. If you like being woken up by folks walking their dog at 7 AM, this is the spot for you," cautions Jake R. about Campgaw Mountain Reservation.
Varying noise levels: Urban-adjacent campgrounds may have traffic sounds. "Stayed in the family campground in a travel trailer. Used a fan in the trailer to block out the sound of traffic with the exception of some sports cars/motorcycles speeding loudly," notes Theresa G. about Cheesequake State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Platform tent sites: Raised wooden platforms keep tents dry during wet conditions. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained," explains Ethan K.
Dog friendly campgrounds near Essex Fells: Multiple locations welcome pets with varying restrictions. "My fiancé, dog, and I have been going here for over 2 years and we love it. The campground is small but also secluded. We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful," shares Paulene-Amanda M.
Weekend activities schedule: Some campgrounds program family events. "Sebago has a ton of activities like outdoor movies and communal bonfires on weekends. I was told by ranger Joe they also do Karaoke nights too," mentions Sara P. about Sebago Cabin Camp.
Tips from RVers
Urban access parking considerations: For city-bound RVers, approach routes matter. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze," advises Joe R. about Liberty Harbor RV Park.
Water hose length planning: Some sites require extended connections. "Very clean and quiet. Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site (15) said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our rv connection," shares antruze about Mahlon Dickerson.
RV site selection for privacy: Location within campgrounds affects experience. "Easy to navigate our 38 ft. RV. Easy to dump and fill. Peaceful. Close to train to N.Y. City," recommends Nancymike K. about Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.
