Best RV Parks & Resorts near Essex Fells, NJ

Several RV parks near Essex Fells offer varying levels of accommodation for motorhomes and travel trailers. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides 90 sites with electric hookups, water, and sanitary dump facilities, though it lacks sewer connections at individual sites. The park accommodates big rigs and offers 30/50-amp service. "Sites are level concrete with full hookups and attached concrete patio," noted one visitor about NWS Earle RV Park, which operates seasonally from April to November. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson features electric and water hookups with level padded sites, though larger RVs may find navigation challenging as it's not designated as big-rig friendly. Mountain Top RV Park includes full hookup options with newly upgraded 50-amp electrical service.

Access considerations vary significantly between facilities in the region. The approach to some parks requires careful navigation, particularly for larger rigs. A review mentioned, "Do NOT come over the Frenchtown bridge. It is WAY too narrow - it's hard to even have two Honda Civics passing, much less any type of RV or TT." Cell service quality fluctuates throughout the area, with AT&T and Verizon coverage reported as spotty at several locations. Most RV parks in the region operate seasonally, with many closing between late October and early April. Dump stations are available at most parks, though some like Liberty Harbor lack sewer hookups at individual sites. Pet policies differ between facilities - while most welcome pets, the Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites explicitly prohibits them. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends and fall foliage season.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites

    Quiet, spacious, no frills

We stayed in site #1 with our 21' travel trailer. In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean. Big rig spots are further back (around site 6-9 or so). 9 sites total & they are often booked, so need to do so in advance. Free beach just a few moments' walk down the road. Close to shore towns & many restaurants. Plenty of space for kids to play in the field/grass area. TONS of geese everywhere though. Pets are NOT allowed (but they'd probably help w the geese problem). You get access to the showers with a key card and when you check in, but I don't have anything to report as I used the bathroom/shower in our trailer. Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well. Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains.

Delaware Water Gap / Pocono Mountain KOA

    Family friendly, super kind staff

We have stayed at a few KOAs and we really liked this one. The staff were kind and so helpful. This is right by Shawnee, several water sports places and near some great hikes. Campground has some nice shaded 30amp back in spots with full hookups. We stayed in 47 which backs up to a wooded area & had good cover. Although the map shows site 47 as electric & water only it's actually full hookups (they just haven't updated the map yet). Some of the pull through sites in the center are not shaded at all, as a heads up. Friends stayed in a deluxe cabin, which was beautiful & looked brand new inside. The camp store has everything you might need. Wi-Fi is free and signal OK. The pool is well maintained and there's a ton of space for outdoor activities like volleyball, mini golf & more. We did a buddy site and stayed next to friends as well for a small extra fee per site. We would stay here again!

Guide to Essex Fells

Camping options near Essex Fells, New Jersey provide access to both the scenic woodlands of northern New Jersey and proximity to New York City attractions. Most rv parks near Essex Fells operate seasonally with limited winter availability between November and March. The region's elevation ranges from 400-600 feet above sea level in most camping areas, with terrain typically featuring rolling hills through deciduous forest.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers multiple trail options within walking distance of campsites. "There are plenty of trails, water (creeks, pond, lake) views and even if the place is packed there is PLENTY of room," notes one visitor about Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.

Ferry transportation: From Liberty Harbor RV Park, access Manhattan via nearby water transport. "The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8. You can see the Statue of Liberty from there," explains one camper at Liberty Harbor RV Park. Another adds, "Short drive to Liberty Park where we got out and walked at night to admire the city skyline and Statue of Liberty at night."

Wildlife viewing: Most campgrounds in the region feature woodland settings with common animal sightings. A visitor to Black Bear RV Park mentioned, "The best part was at dusk when the animals came out!" The park provides good wildlife observation opportunities despite being relatively close to suburban areas.

What campers like

Level sites: Many campgrounds offer prepared parking areas for easy setup. One visitor to NWS Earle RV Park noted, "Small campground with 8 spaces in the main area and 7 in an adjacent area. All spaces are level concrete with full hookups and attached concrete patio."

Laundry facilities: Several parks provide machine access, though availability varies. "Laundry facilities are free for use and in like new condition," reports one camper about NWS Earle RV Park.

Farm animals: Some campgrounds incorporate agricultural elements. A visitor to Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort described, "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," and another highlighted the "amazingly beautiful miniature horse that wonders around its huge pin located in the middle of the campground."

What you should know

Variable cell service: Coverage quality differs significantly between sites and providers. A camper at Tri-State RV Park commented, "It's close to the highway, so there's a lot of noise. But, the people are very friendly and helpful."

Seasonal access limitations: Most campgrounds restrict operations during winter months. Mahlon Dickerson maintains year-round access while NWS Earle RV Park operates from "April 1 to November 15."

Advance planning needed: Popular weekends require early booking. "Sites are on a gravel lot. Restrooms are clean. Not much else to say about this CG, is just a parking lot with hookups," notes a visitor about Tri-State RV Park, emphasizing the basic nature of some facilities.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Some parks offer dedicated play equipment. "They have a small playground that would be better suited for older children, and there's also a nice lounge room with games, a pool table, a TV and puzzles/board games," shares one visitor to Mountain Top RV Park.

Swimming options: Pool access varies by location and season. A Mountain Top visitor highlighted "the updated pool, playground, game room, and a brand-new pickleball court that added a unique touch to the stay."

Pet restrictions: Not all campgrounds permit animals. Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites explicitly prohibits pets, while most other facilities allow them with restrictions.

Tips from RVers

Navigation challenges: Some areas require careful route planning for larger vehicles. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze," advises one camper at Liberty Harbor RV Park.

Electrical capacity: Recent upgrades at several parks have improved power availability. Mountain Top RV Park installed "new 50amp wiring, upgraded sewer systems, and newer water lines provided convenient camping experience."

Overnight layovers: Several parks accommodate single-night stays for travelers passing through. "This is a pricey park, but options are limited. As in almost non existent. This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore," explains a visitor about Liberty Harbor RV Park.
