    Prairie View Campground

    Great Little Campground

Such a great campground just outside of Lusk WY. Pull through sites that are full hookup. Very clean bathrooms and showers (newly remodeled). Also have laundry services. Campground owners are super friendly and helpful. Also a very pet friendly place. They have WiFi that works pretty good. Have had to use my hotspot some when it cuts out. If looking for places to walk there is about a .2 mile loop around the campground, a rest stop 1/2 a mile away with a walking path and also a gravel road across the highway from the campground that barely has traffic. Town has a nice grocery and hardware store. People here are super friendly. Only downside is that it is along a busy highway so you hear some road noise but if you’re in a trailer with windows closed it isn’t very noticeable. Has been a great experience!

    Prairie View Campground

    Nice Campground

The owners were very nice and helpful. The campground was very clean and all sites were decentIy Ieveled graveI pull through with a few extra large sites for big rigs. We had no problems parking and leveling our 30ft TT. Our site was full hookup. Some sites had a little shade. Very nice and clean bathrooms with two showers and two stalls in each. Laundry room had two washers and two dryers. WiFi was good, but streaming was spotty. The campground is just outside of town. Roadway noise was minimal. The town is beautiful and has several great restaurants and if you have kids you must visit Tiger Plunge Pool. Great stop and I would absolutely stay again!

    BJ's Campground

I had a great overnight stay.

There are only a few places to stay in this town and I was relieved on how safe and clean this facility was. Very nice pull through sights and the bathrooms were extremely clean. Dog park right across the street and big rig friendly. This is a smaller place but very easy to maneuver around no matter what size. Loved the grass at each site. Well taken care of and they paid attention to details making it perfect to stay. Definitely a great place for family or Solo Traveler.

Red Cloud Campground — Fort Robinson State Park

    Newer campground in historic location

This is a full hookup (electric/water/sewer) campground, appears to be recently updated. Concrete pad, fairly level. Picnic table and grill in each site. Few trees, mixture of shade and non shade sites. Decent amount of space between sites. Bathrooms and showers are available near the partial hookup campground. Good Verizon cell coverage. Campground is on site of old Fort Robinson. The old barracks and post buildings are available to reserve and stay in. This area is prime for equestrians with many trails to explore on horseback. Numerous trails aren’t quite as friendly for hiking on foot because of tall grass. There are a couple of scenic roads (1 unpaved/washboardy; 1 paved on canyon road) to drive and see local landscape. On site attractions: History museum, restaurant serving breakfast/lunch/dinner, indoor swimming pool, horse stables, general store, small library. Historical markers paying homage to Levi Robinson (the fort’s namesake) and the site on which Crazy Horse was killed.

    BJ's Campground

Great place to stay while playing through

We stayed at BJ’s Campground for just one night while passing through the area. We were in our class C while slowly making our way across the country. We had no problems getting a spot here. Sites are gravel for the RV, very level, and very well maintained. All sites are pull through. Hookups are in very good condition. Each site had a grassy area with a covered picnic table. Staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a park across the street with a playground.

The access to the campground was easy.  Use caution when exiting the park.  Google Maps took us down a block to exit the park. This was convenient for our campsite, but ended up with a couple of deep dips at crossroads.  The streets coming into the park did not have dips.

We had 2 bar LTE with Verizon. Our hotspot was usable and performed very well. The campground wifi was average at best.

We enjoyed our brief stay at this campground. We will stay again when traveling this way.

    Nebraska National Forest at Chadron

    Awesome hiking!

Factoid: When I stayed here I learned that the Nebraska National Forest is manmade! It is the largest hand planted forest in the US. it felt like a green oasis in the “desert" of Western Nebraska!

I spent 3 days hiking in this Forest and enjoyed every minute on each trail. This area has such differing geography. I’d begin the hike in the Forest, climb up to the ridge and catch views all the way into the vast, flat Buffalo National Grasslands area.

My home base was in Chadron State Park where I camped. The park itself has 6 miles of hiking trails which connect with several other trails in the Nebraska National Forest. The video is a section of the Black Hills Overlook Trail in the National Forest. A definite must! There was evidence of old wildfires on the western slopes, but otherwise the lodgepole pine trees were beautiful. Steamboat Butte Trail is another good hike.

Chadron State Park is located in the Nebraska National Forest off Hwy 385 south of the town of Chadron which has a Walmart for supplies. The park has pretty much everything: a fishing pond, A trading post for basic camp supplies and some food, swimming pool, seasonal horseback trail rides, archery range, tennis court, disc golf, sand volleyball, horseshoe pits, softball field, playground, AC/heated cabins, group camping with a group lodge,  and campsites with 30 amp HU, no water so fill up at the bathrooms and there’s a dump station on site.

The site I was in was level, but there was no shade. Shade trees are sparse in the area where I was camped. It was quiet and the stars were great at night, and made for a good home base from which to hike in the Nebraska National Forest.

    Pine Ridge Dispersed Camping

Gorgeous northwest Nebraska boondocking with a view

We're in the midst of a week in our 26' travel trailer along this beautiful 1.5 mile-long dirt Forest Service road 714-A, directly above Chadron State Park. We're guessing that most folks who stay in the State Park campground below are unaware that dispersed camping is indeed permitted within 300 feet of the center line of this road, for even though the popular State Park campground remains closed for another day due to a delayed COVID-19 opening, and is booked solid thereafter, there's absolutely no one else camping up here!

You actually have to drive through the State Park to access FR-714-A, and the park does not lock their gate overnight so access remains unrestricted. The road is in excellent shape and negotiable by any trailer or motorhome, but is only a single lane wide. We're 700 feet of elevation above the plains below, with stunning views stretching off to the horizon. Much of this area has burned in the past, but the area where we're camping is lush and grassy with some stately pines around. This isn't the Nebraska that you know!

Cell service on Verizon is a solid 3+ bars - 54ms ping, 13.6 Mbps down, 3.5 Mbps up. The Verizon tower is visible about 5 miles to the south of our campsite.

There are numerous hiking trails that depart from either end of FR-714-A, including some in the State Park. Fresh water, an RV dump and a camp store are all located within the park, along with an archery range, sledding hill, fishing pond, playgrounds, picnic areas and more.

One star is deducted only because:

    • There are only a couple of sites that would work with a vehicle, for there's a well-hidden drainage ditch dug on each side of the road; and
    • There's a bit of daytime traffic due to people accessing the hiking trailhead at the end of the road. Vehicles are forced to camp right along the road, as any side spurs visible on satellite imagery have been marked "No motor vehicles" by the Forest Service. For tent campers, though, it's a short walk right to the rim of Pine Ridge for even more spectacular views.

The phone number provided is for the Nebraska National Forest Pine Hill Ranger District in Chadron, in whose jurisdiction this road resides.

Guide to Harrison

RV camping near Harrison, Nebraska provides access to the northwestern corner of the Nebraska Panhandle, where elevations range from 4,800 to 5,000 feet. The region experiences distinct seasons with cold winters, mild summers, and relatively low annual precipitation of 14-16 inches. Harrison sits amid grasslands and pine-covered buttes, creating terrain that's accessible for most vehicles but varies significantly with weather conditions.

What to Do

Explore historical sites: Fort Robinson State Park offers numerous activities beyond standard camping. "There are tons of hiking trails in the park, from 'easy' up to 'hard'. There are also jeep tours, short and long horseback trail rides, stagecoach rides, chuckwagon meals, breakfast or dinner among the nearby buttes, an indoor swimming pool, and the 'Trailside Museum', each for a fee," notes a reviewer at Soldier Creek Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Pioneer Park in Torrington provides water access about 60 miles from Harrison. "Such a quiet and pretty little park. Has everything you need right here. A river for fishing. Electric and water at every site and an RV dump station on the other side of the park. Almost like camping in your favorite city park," according to Karen L.

Visit museums: The region contains unique cultural attractions. While staying at Pony Soldier RV Park, campers can explore the on-site museum. One reviewer notes, "There is also a history museum on the property," adding that the area has "very close to historical sites and some great views."

What Campers Like

Peace and quiet: Harrison City Park offers a serene camping environment despite its in-town location. "Parked is very nicely kept and amazingly quiet at night. There are two bathrooms right next to the camp site," reports James B.

Reasonable prices: Cost-conscious travelers appreciate the affordable options in the region. At Pioneer Park, campers enjoy "Electric and water on concrete pads. Good spacing between sites. Clean and open. Nice to walk about the whole area. Concrete bean bag toss games and about 5 horseshoe pitches."

Friendly service: Several rv parks near Harrison, Nebraska feature welcoming staff. At BJ's Campground in Lusk, Wyoming, "Staff was very friendly and helpful. When we checked in we were given a list of places to eat, get fuel, walk the dogs," reports one camper, while another mentioned, "Owner was very friendly and helpful with travel info for the area."

What You Should Know

Train noise: Several campgrounds in the region experience railroad activity. At Crawford City Park, "You can hear the stock yards across the street, and train from the HU sites, but not really from the dispersed area," notes William B. Another camper reports, "The noise is from the 4-BNSF trains per hour coming from/going to the Wyoming coal fields."

Payment systems vary: Many RV camping facilities near Harrison have unique payment requirements. Harrison City Park operates on a "donation based with deposit right next to camp sites" system according to reviews.

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts camping conditions significantly. At Eagles Rest RV Park in Chadron, one camper noted, "Wi fi is spotty at best. No local tv channels at all," which could impact winter stays when indoor time increases.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground access: Several parks offer child-friendly recreation areas. Crawford City Park features a "Great playground for kids" according to William B., making it suitable for families needing entertainment options.

Educational opportunities: The region provides learning experiences through historical sites. At Fort Robinson State Park, families can participate in "Jeep rides" and visit museums, creating educational opportunities during vacation.

Recreational amenities: Parks offer various activities for children. Pioneer Park includes "frisbee golf, horseshoes, playground, amphitheater, and basketball hoop," allowing families multiple recreation options without leaving the campground.

Tips from RVers

Site configurations: Harrison City Park has specific layout considerations. "Sites are basically two parking stalls on a concrete pad. The only way to fit two RVs at a time would be if they were both vans, and that would be tight," notes James B., while Dave B. adds it's "Tight and cozy."

Dump station locations: Not all RV parks Harrison, Nebraska and surrounding areas have on-site dump facilities. Crawford City Park has a sanitary dump station, but one reviewer notes about the facility, "There is a dump site located near the sites, which you have to drive into the grass to use."

Leveling considerations: Site conditions vary across campgrounds. At City Slickers RV Park, sites are "on a complete gravel area with not much shade," while BJ's Campground provides "Level sites" that are "Easy place to get in and out of" with "Water, electricity, sewer."
