    Big Red Barn RV Park

    Gunn Park

    Nice quiet campground

We have stayed there about 6 times. Very quiet. Needs some renovations. Sites are not level and need either more gravel or concrete. Most of the sites are 30 amp and no dump station. Water and electric only.

Big rigs at some of the sites will have a problem. Renember this is a old campground. Fishing from the shore is great no boats. Adult children ( seniors) lol are there every day looking to catch dinner.

    Joplin KOA

    Nice enough

Clean and well maintained KOA. Friendly personnel. Shaded, pull thru sites as well as back-ins, cabins, and tent sites. Sites are very level with crushed stone pads. Good water pressure. Lots of grass. Patio sites are available. Internet is poor, as typical of most RV parks. Cable tv with about 30 channels. Good stopover park.

    Beagle Bay RV Haven Campground

    Wonderful place to relax

Tent area is undeveloped, but the lawn is fairly level, bathrooms and showers are only a short walk away. Nicole showed me to the site and was a wonderful help. Great spot that most people might pass up because its right next to the highway, but honestly you can barely tell aside from the hum of trucks. Bathrooms are beautiful and clean, 2 toilets, 2 showers and a sauna in each. The place is quiet and seems like a lot of people here are long term residents. We are in a tent on the back lawn by a small fishing lake. Nice playground for younger kids and you cant beat the atmosphere and the birds. Free on-site laundry which I took advantage of when I needed to wash and dry my blanket on a cold night. Unfourtunately no campfire for tent camp sites, but bring a camp stove and you'll be fine. They are actively doing renovations and the office isnt open yet, so you have to call the park manager, Kim, for info and she is wonderful. All the staff is. Kim came by and took my son and 2 other kids on a golf cart ride on the trail behind the lake and they had a blast. We are loving it here and are sad to be leaving after the weekend. Update: I have just been informed they have a Willie Nelson impersonator doing a show here tonight, this place would get 6 stars if I could.

Rocky Cove Campground — Crawford State Park

Stayed at Rocky Cove Campground on the Lake

We stayed in late June in the Rocky Cove Campground on the lake.  The lake itself is dotted with campgrounds.  Rocky Cove has concrete pad sites, nice and level, both on and away from the lake.  The lake sites have power only, and the Prime sites (opposite the lakeside sites) have water and power both.  We don't have water in our teardrop, so we got water from an unoccupied site.

The sites are small, and for the summer, don't stay in site #118 (a lakeside site), as it has no protection from the sun.  The sun sets across the lake and although the view is great, the sun bakes the campsite from morning until 9 pm.  The site next door, #120 is nice and shady.  In winter, the desirability of the sites might be reversed.

The odd thing about the campground is that there is no bathroom or showers.  At all.  You have to go to the next campground over, Oak Point.  Not convenient.  Overall, Oak Point appears to be the better choice, with more trees, larger sites and a convenient bathroom (with ice machine at the entrance).  I should note the restroom was "clean enough".  Not terrible, not great.  The shower I used had merely a trickle, but my wife's had great pressure.  The hand dryer in the men's room looked corroded and was out of order (in Oak Point)

All the campgrounds appeared quiet, and the people there were friendly.  We would go back, but stay in Oak Point.

    Osage Prairie RV Park

    At Best an Overnighter

We read raving campground (CG) reviews on Osage Prairie, especially how nice the owners were. Based on reviews, we decided to spend three nights here to break up our way south for our annual RV maintenance appointment. Check in was easy and the lady was very friendly with a sense of humor. We were then escorted to pull through site 14 with FHUs. The way the long pull throughs work is that another trailer can back up to you. It was nice that the utilities and picnic tables were on opposite sides. We were told we probably would not get anyone in behind us. About 30 minutes after arrival, a small trailer came in without reservations and was placed right up behind us. We concur that the lady owner who checked us in was very nice. The other owner who escorted us to our site was, in our opinion, a little on the sarcastic side, especially after we had cut our turn on their grass getting into our site. This CG is an A-Typical overnighter where they cram you in. The park filled up every night after our Thursday arrival but we do realize they are in the business of making money. Good news is there were grass areas between sites so you can get slides and awnings out. WiFi was below average for a CG this size. No cable or OTA but after moving our satellite dish around to avoid trees we got it to connect. We got three bars on Verizon. The park is convenient to get on/off I-49 (exits 203 and 202A are both fine) but you’re going to get highway noise day and night. The CG is about 1/2 short termers and 1/2 long timers, and several of the long timer rigs gave the CG that “trailer park” look. I picked up numerous cigar and cigarette butts off our site to include trash in the little grill. We did not enjoy the older Dodge diesel trucks starting up at 5:00 AM to head out to work or wherever they were going. On a more positive side, they have a nice stable with one horse, which you can pet but not feed or ride (guess someone tried to ride him once upon a time). Shower and laundry facility looked clean. They have a little gift shop in the office containing a few camping supplies and leather goods. Again, from previous camper reviews, we thought Nevada (Nee-vay-dah) would be worth touring around but we were not impressed. We grocery shopped at Woods and Walmart and both were on the low side of okay. Our final “not impressed” came when we saw long timers letting their dogs do #2 in the tent area and not pick it up. Then they locked their 3 dogs in their trailer and left early Saturday and had not returned by the time we left the following Monday morning. Their poor dogs barked on and off all day and night. We informed the owner and he said he had told them in the past to not do that anymore. This place is definitely about the frosting, not the cake. We should have just stayed one night and moved on, but we stayed too long and experienced too much. We won’t be back.

Guide to Sheldon

RV parks near Sheldon, Missouri offer convenient camping options within southwestern Missouri's Ozark Plateau region. At approximately 900 feet elevation, this area experiences humid continental climate with warm summers and moderate winters. Weather patterns shift quickly in spring, requiring campers to prepare for potential thunderstorms from April through June when visiting campgrounds in this region.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The stocked pond at Arrowhead Point RV Park & Cabins provides a convenient catch-and-release fishing spot without leaving the campground. "Nice small catch and release pond. Has 2 club houses with large grills and 3 cabins also. Had a very nice quiet relaxing weekend," notes Jason C.

Explore historic Route 66: Several campgrounds provide access to Route 66 attractions. Beagle Bay RV Haven Campground sits near the historic highway. "On top of those they have bathrooms & showers with a sauna in each and a laundry unit which are all very nice," mentions Austin H.

Visit local drive-in theater: Just blocks from Camp Mi Casa on the Route RV Park sits a vintage drive-in movie theater. "Want to watch a old time outdoor movie drive in. Its a couple of blocks down the road. They have a pool and pavilion," says Mike C.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention well-maintained restrooms and shower facilities. At Big Red Barn RV Park, "The bathrooms were toasty warm and VERY clean. Lavatory hot water got warm quickly, plenty of soap and towels," according to Gregg L.

Quiet locations: Many RVers appreciate parks set back from highways. "Very convenient to Interstate 49, but virtually no traffic noise and none while inside the van. The CG was VERY quiet - very peaceful," notes another Big Red Barn RV Park guest.

Helpful staff: Campground hosts receive consistent praise for their hospitality. "I knew within minutes of check in that we picked the right overnight stop. The couple who runs the place couldn't be better," shares Evan L. about Osage Prairie RV Park.

What you should know

Highway noise levels: Some parks experience significant traffic noise. "Next to busy highway and trains," warns Kevin L. about Osage Prairie RV Park, giving it just 2 stars despite other positive features.

Seasonal operations: Several campgrounds limit operations during winter months. Osceola RV Park & Campground operates from "mid March to November 30," making advanced planning necessary for off-season travelers.

Reservation requirements: Many parks fill quickly during peak seasons. "We had reserved a spot that would have been too small for our rig. Owner had already caught my mistake on check in and moved us to a better spot," explains Alana R. about her stay at Arrowhead Point.

Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly amenities: Some RV parks near Sheldon feature playgrounds and recreational facilities. "They have everything you could want! Arcade, swimming pool, kids playground and a pond to fish," notes Austin H. about Beagle Bay RV Haven.

Consider pool access: Swimming options provide welcome relief during hot summer months. "The swimming pool is a little small but my kids love it! My 2 year old was able to learn to swim better in it," shares Tamisha S. about Camp Mi Casa on the Route RV Park.

Mini golf options: Certain parks offer additional activities beyond standard amenities. "Great site with mini golf for the kids too," mentions Evan L. about his family's stay at Osage Prairie RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Pull-through site availability: Many parks offer convenient pull-through sites for easier setup. "We stayed in a pull through spot with full hook ups for a week. They have spots for any size of rig," notes Brittany M. about Osceola RV Park.

Cell service reliability: Mobile connectivity varies throughout the region. "We got three bars on Verizon," reports one camper about their stay, allowing for adequate connectivity for most needs.

Camp store supplies: Some parks maintain limited supplies for emergencies. "The office has various items for sale, from snacks to RV gear," notes Gregg L. about the Big Red Barn RV Park store, providing convenience for forgotten items.

Long-term parking options: Several parks accommodate extended stays. "The park is about 1/2 short termers and 1/2 long timers," notes a camper at Zans Creekside RV Park, where "nice shady spot overlooking the river" provides comfortable extended camping.
