Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

    Nice secluded spots

Two parks in one. The Hermitage and The Pittsburgh. We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You’re in the woods so take bug spray. Level paved lots to choose from. Fire rings and covered picnic tables. Lots of shade.

Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

    Our First Popup Adventure

Our first camping adventure in the popup took us to Pomme de Terre State Park on Father’s Day of 2017. Pomme de Terre State Park is one State Park that is two completely separate campgrounds, split in half by Pomme de Terre lake. When booking pay attention to whether you are on the Hermitage side or the Pittsburgh side. Each campground has it’s own camp store, swim beach, boat launch, and sanitary disposal station.

We have camped three separate times at Pomme de Terre with all three campsites being in the 400 loop on the Pittsburgh side. This loop has been chosen due to its proximity to the bathrooms and the playground, these are key when having a 4-year-old. This loop is located in the woods with nice spacing between sites. Each site comes with a fire ring and covered picnic table. I will warn you that some of the sites on the left when you first pull into the loop are on an incline, so bring plenty of leveling pads with you if you have a trailer. If you are wanting to be close to the water this loop is not the one you will want to reserve. I would look more in the 300 loop, though those sites are gravel in case that is an issue for you, or look at the Hermitage side. The bathroom and shower house located at the entrance to loop 400 are some of the nicest that we have experience while staying in a state park. They are clean and well maintained. Located throughout the loops are vault toilets if you choose a site farther away from the main bathroom.

We enjoy the campground and marina on the Pittsburgh side. The marina is stocked with some camp essentials as well as a café for a quick bite. They also have boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards for rent, for a list a prices here is the Marina’s website www.mofunparks.com. This is one of our son’s favorite stops on the trip, they have a nice selection of ice cream. The size of the marina is not large, and if it is busy the inside can be very cramped. We do prefer the swim beach on the Hermitage side it is located along a peninsula with ample room on busy days, as opposed to the Pittsburgh swim beach that is located in a cove without as much space.

When traveling between the two state parks you will travel through Hermitage, Missouri. They have a Dollar General, gas station, and some restaurants. I cannot speak for the restaurants, but we have used the Dollar General for supplies that did not make the trip. Located at the junction of Hwy 64 and Hwy 64B, just outside of the Pittsburgh side of the park, you will find an old building directly across from White’s Marine Center that is selling camp wood. The person that sells the wood will be out there sometimes, but if they are not, there is drop box mounted to one of the poles to leave money in. I was able to purchase a wheelbarrow load for $8.00, which is a much better deal than the small bundle they sell in the park for $5.00.

Pomme de Terre State Park has become a family favorite campground. We will be making a voyage here every year to continue exploring.

Great Owners run the well stocked store and see to your needs. Camping cabins for rent. Great shower house. Loved this place we will be back soon. Definitely a 12 out of 10!

RANGER REVIEW: I had the opportunity to review the GCI Slim Fold Cook Station. Wow what a great addition! Totally loved it. Spacious room on top. Found it to be pretty stable. Sever hooks for hanging items for quick access. Made from sturdy material. Set up and take down super easy. We used iron grill with it and found it to be a match. Also used as a buffet for feeding larger number. Very versatile . Definite 10

Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Nice military campground on the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area (LORA) is a great destination for camping, boating, swimming, water skiing, fishing and other outdoor activities. The lake is one of the Nation's largest man-made lakes, providing you with over 1150 miles of shoreline to enjoy. LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD employees with ID cards, family members and Fort Leonard Wood contract employees.  Plenty to do and see here.  Boat rentals, hiking, and others mentioned above.  The LORA Country Store carries ice, beverages, firewood and a small selection of food including snacks, milk, eggs and bread. The store also carries the basic necessities needed for camping and fishing, including fishing licenses.  Can rent a tent site, camper site with full or partial hook ups, cabins 1-3 bedroom, etc.  The marina has boat and jet-ski rentals (pontoons, wave runners, jet ski's, ski boats, fishing boats, pontoons, etc.) that are much more reasonable then other rental places in the area. Area is staffed by on-duty MP's out of Fort Leonard Wood.

    B Berry Farms & Co.

    Quiet and Cozy Campground

My girlfriend and I stayed here during our road-trip through MO. The owners Brandon and Theresa were very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. They gave us a tour of the farm when we arrived and let us pick out which camp site we wanted. The camp site had everything we needed including a fire pit, grill, picnic table, water spout and bath room nearby. We enjoyed picking black berries right next to our campsite to have with breakfast in the morning. I highly recommend staying here with your family or significant other!

Guide to Linn Creek

Cabin camping near Linn Creek, Missouri offers accommodations across the Lake of the Ozarks region, with options ranging from waterfront structures to forested retreats. The area sits at approximately 700 feet elevation with humid continental climate patterns that create distinct seasonal camping conditions. Winter cabin rentals operate with limited amenities at most locations from November through March, while summer availability requires booking 3-6 months in advance.

What to do

Float trips on Niangua River: Little Niangua Campground offers direct access to river activities with canoe and kayak access. A camper noted, "Loved camping there and floating down the river! Will continue to camp here in the future!"

Trout fishing: Bennett Spring State Park Campground provides cabin access to some of Missouri's premier trout waters. A visitor shared, "This is one of Missouri's 'trout parks' with a hatchery and release sites so fishing (which actually becomes catching) is a big draw."

Miniature golf and lake activities: Family-friendly recreation options include paddle boats and mini-golf at several campgrounds with cabin rentals. One camper at Cross Creek RV Park mentioned, "Kids love the mini golf, shuffleboard, and basketball. Huge private lake great for fishing and watching duck families swim by and come up to you on the grass!"

What campers like

Military-exclusive cabin options: Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area cabins provide special access for service members. A military camper reported, "Absolutely hidden gem on the lake available for military (active/retired/DAV). Has full hookups, big rig friendly and has a large array of boats you can rent."

Seasonal camping atmosphere: The area transforms throughout the year with different cabin rental experiences. According to a Linn Creek KOA visitor, "Very nice, clean and quiet. We are here in the middle of October waiting for the leaves to turn. Good access to the Lake of the Ozarks."

Proximity to outdoor attractions: Cabins serve as convenient bases for exploring multiple outdoor destinations. At Hidden Valley Outfitters, a camper mentioned, "Great spot on the niangua river with easy access to the river which was a nice place to relax after fishing over at Bennett all day (which is conveniently right across the street!)"

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin rentals require advance booking, with procedures varying by location. A visitor at Military Park Fort Leonard Wood Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area noted, "Very relaxed reservation procedure. We called and were told to just show up. They would hold a spot for us. It worked out fine."

Site selection considerations: Cabin locations vary significantly in terms of access, views, and terrain. One camper advised, "If you go here DO NOT GET CABIN 6. It's the only one you can't park in front of as it's down the side of a hill. You must traverse several levels of steps down a steep grade."

Alcohol policies: Rules regarding alcohol consumption differ across cabin rental locations. Windermere Baptist Conference Center maintains an alcohol-free policy throughout its property, unlike many other area cabins that permit responsible consumption.

Tips for camping with families

Seasonal activities planning: Different seasons offer varying family experiences in Lake of the Ozarks cabins. A family at Deer Valley Campground shared, "With no cover charge for live music and some of the lowest food and drink prices on the lake, it's a great place to relax and enjoy the waterfront views."

Private island cabin options: Some locations offer unique cabin accommodations on small islands. One family at Cross Creek RV Park reported, "We tent camped on the island for 2 nights. It was awesome, you can fish right off the bank of your own private island within in minutes of waking up. Had a restroom on the island, big plus for a family with 5 little ones."

Off-season cabin camping: Winter cabin stays offer different experiences with fewer crowds. A winter camper at Bennett Spring State Park noted, "We stayed in campground one because it is the only one open during the off season. You can make reservations online before going to ensure you have the spot you want."

Tips from RVers

Parking considerations: RVers who utilize cabins should understand parking limitations. A visitor commented about Linn Creek KOA, "Great place for a place to stay near the lake of the ozarks attractions. Super close to big surf and not a bad drive from all the lake has to offer. But not a favorite for a trip focused more on hanging out at the camp site."

Road access challenges: Some cabin rental locations have difficult access roads. One RVer warned about a property, "The road to get in and out of this place is absolutely ridiculous. You can try to go 1mph to avoid potholes or washed out area just to hit the next pothole and washed out area."

Campground store provisions: On-site stores at cabin campgrounds stock different levels of supplies. A visitor at Hidden Valley Outfitters appreciated, "The New Country Camp Store is very nice, you can get pizzas to go, eat em at the river or ur camper, there is a walk in beer cooler, fishing supplies and lots of other things you might need, if you forgot."
