Best Dispersed Camping near Agency, MO

Camping options around Agency, Missouri include several state-managed fishing lakes and conservation areas within an hour's drive. Crooked River Conservation Area in Missouri offers free dispersed camping with basic amenities, while Kansas state fishing lakes like Atchison and Leavenworth provide quiet lakeside camping opportunities. These areas primarily feature primitive sites suitable for tents and smaller RVs, with most campgrounds offering basic facilities such as pit toilets and picnic tables. The region's camping landscape is characterized by simple, no-frills sites that provide direct access to fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities.

Road access varies across these camping areas, with most sites accessible via county roads and gravel pull-offs. According to one camper at Atchison State Fishing Lake, "We drove down 322nd Rd. to get to our site near the bathrooms across from the maintenance building. That road is gradual enough that I was able to get my short bus down it safely." Many locations have stay limits, typically 7 days as noted at Atchison State Fishing Lake. Facilities are minimal, with pit toilets being the standard amenity. Visitors should be prepared for self-sufficient camping as drinking water and hookups are generally unavailable. Weather conditions can affect accessibility, particularly during spring and after heavy rainfall.

Campers consistently mention the peaceful atmosphere as a primary attraction of these sites. One visitor to Atchison State Fishing Lake noted, "We're the only ones camping here. Some people come to fish during the day but it's dead at night." This pattern appears common across the region, with another reviewer at Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake sharing, "There were very few campers, even on the weekends. Many slept in their cars and left at first light." The fishing lakes attract day visitors but remain quiet overnight, making them ideal for those seeking solitude. Wildlife viewing, fishing, and hunting are popular activities, with the Missouri Department of Conservation areas providing designated camping zones in proximity to these recreational opportunities. Bathroom facilities receive mixed reviews, with maintenance quality varying by location.

    Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

    Quiet spot

This is a small remote lake of about 160 acres water area. A county road takes you through the area and across the dam. There are gravel pull off areas and a lakeside gravel road. The pit toilet is not well maintained. Not suitable for larger vehicles.

    Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

7-day limit. No trash cans or water, but it's free.

There's sun by the bathrooms, and there's shade in the forested campground. Everything is as great as it can be, aside from missing trash cans, and ideally water and grey dump, but that's usually rare to find water and a grey dump at a free site.

I'm starting to think that Kansas has a 7-day limit instead of a 14 because this is the second time that a Kansas park official came to the door and said we need to leave. So I'm going to treat all Kansas places as a 7-day limit.

    Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

    Nice and quiet

Camped here several days in late June. The were very few campers, even on the weekends. Many slept in their cars and left at first light. I assume they went fishing at the lake. Bathroom was a little rough but manageable.

These primitive camping locations typically feature unimproved roads and simple facilities, with most sites located within an hour's drive of Agency. What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake, the 160-acre water area attracts anglers year-round. "This is a small remote lake of about 160 acres water area. A county road takes you through the area and across the dam," notes John G., who describes the lake's accessibility via gravel pull-offs and a lakeside gravel road.

Wildlife observation: The remote setting of Elrod Mill Access provides undisturbed wildlife viewing. Sayler O. explains, "Elrod Mill Conservation Area is a quiet, hidden gem for anyone who enjoys dispersed camping. There's no developed campground here, but you can camp, and that's part of what makes it special."

Hunting access: Conservation areas serve as entry points to seasonal hunting grounds. Gary S. mentions at Crooked River Conservation Area, visitors can enjoy "hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities inside the area," making it a versatile base camp for sportspeople throughout the hunting seasons.

What campers like

Uncrowded camping: The lack of other campers draws those seeking solitude to rustic sites around Agency. At Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake, Kevin C. observed, "Camped here several days in late June. The were very few campers, even on the weekends. Many slept in their cars and left at first light."

Lake views: Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake offers waterfront camping with convenient access. Reagan G. shares, "This site was easy to find and had a beautiful view of the lake! There is a brochure available online to help find the designated camping areas! We were the only people in the area we parked at!"

What you should know

Stay limits: Camping duration restrictions vary but trend shorter than expected in Kansas sites. Rick M. at Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake advises, "I'm starting to think that Kansas has a 7-day limit instead of a 14 because this is the second time that a Kansas park official came to the door and said we need to leave."

Facility maintenance: Bathroom conditions can be inconsistent across different locations. John G. reports at Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake, "The pit toilet is not well maintained," while Kevin C. adds they are "a little rough but manageable."

Self-sufficiency required: Campers must bring all necessities. Sayler O. explains at Elrod Mill Access, "There aren't any amenities—no bathrooms, no picnic tables, no hookups—so you'll need to come prepared and be self-sufficient."

Tips for camping with families

Look for designated areas: Some conservation areas have specific camping zones. At Crooked River Conservation Area, Gary S. notes there is "free camping in designated camping area per MO Dept of Conservation rules," making it easier to locate appropriate sites for family camping.

Consider bathroom access: When camping with children, prioritize sites with facilities. Reagan G. found at Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake that having a privy available made the site more family-friendly, especially with young campers.

Prepare for isolation: Remote sites require extra planning with children. Sayler O. emphasizes that Elrod Mill Access is "very much off the beaten path," requiring families to pack additional supplies and emergency items due to limited cell service and distance from conveniences.

Tips from RVers

Road gradient challenges: Steep access roads limit suitable sites for larger vehicles. At Atchison State Fishing Lake, Rick M. shares his experience: "We drove down 322nd Rd. to get to our site near the bathrooms across from the maintenance building. That road is gradual enough that I was able to get my short bus down it safely without tipping over."

Site restrictions: Camping locations may be more limited than they appear. Rick M. discovered at Atchison State Fishing Lake, "I thought we were supposed to park near the cabin, however, it's the part to the left of the cabin that we are supposed to camp at. The website actually forbids anybody camping around the cabin."

Size limitations: Many rustic camping areas near Agency cannot accommodate larger RVs. John G. cautions that Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake is "not suitable for larger vehicles," making it necessary for RVers to research access routes and site dimensions before arrival.
