    Drews Country Camping

    Rustic Backyard Camping Charm

This is a sweet little family-owned park just outside Holland with about 30 grassy sites that feel more like someone’s big backyard than an actual campground. The place has been around since 1981, and while you’ll notice some older RVs parked around the edges and a slightly dumpy vibe overall, it’s still cared for with pride with fairly clean restrooms (in a building that looks like it was built in the 1930s), a small playground where the boys burned off energy, and a pool that (full disclosure) sits right up front near the highway so it feels a bit awkward, but still fun on a hot day. Our boys made fast friends, turning a simple game of tag into a neighborhood adventure before we strolled into town for cones at the Polka Dot Ice Cream Parlor and a sunset walk along 8th Street. I’d recommend Drew’s to families for its homey feel, fairly well-maintained facilities despite the vintage look, and the friendly mix of full-timers and travel-campers that keeps things relaxed and welcoming.

    Crockery Creek RV Park

    Rude and unprofessional

The little owners wife racially profiled my kids friends mom,  in front of the kids!!!!!!  Ha!  She tried accusing us of sneaking in their pool.  That's hilarious,  because we paid $3700.00 for a seasonal.  The pool is actually small and it was oily and full of hair.  Being off Apple Ave,  it's  loud and hard to relax.  My husband had a tragic workplace accident,  so we weren't able to get to the camper in a few weeks.  The owner called him multiple times at once,  being aggressive with his tone,  trying to get us to pull our camper so they can rent that spot out.  They must be desperate for money.  They should try reading up on the law.  Their website lies about their amenities,  they had no fish all season and their pond was disgusting.

    Steamboat Park Campground

    Wonderful, well thought through campground.

I have had a very enjoyable stay. The river location is quite nice and the grounds are very well cared for. The site(and all sites, as far as I can see) are quite level. The bathrooms are not just clean and well maintained, but the shower rooms also have a dedicated sink and toilet, which I much appreciate. The washer and dryers in the bathhouse are brand new and take credit cards. While it is near a regional airport, there is close to no air traffic and no commercial traffic I noticed. Overall, probably one of the top 5 campgrounds I have encountered, if the list was for being up to date, well thought out and well provisioned. Everything was top notch.

    Brookside City Park

    More expensive now

Tents sites are now $20 and RV hookups (water and 20/30 amp) are $30. When I got to the police station they were closed for the week but a phone # was provided to call dispatcher and an officer responded promptly to help me get registered. Cash or check only.

    Tyler Creek

    Absolutely garbage

Had a reservation for 6 months and the day we were to arrive, we were told we could not have the site we prepared for because someone else wanted to stay longer.  Management has the right to alter your reservation without your consent or the courtesy of a phone call.  When questioned, the owner treated us like garbage and was rude as hell.  Would never recommend this place to anyone, stay away!!!

    Chinook Camping

    Nice Spot

Tent lots are not very private. No hiking trails or green area to walk around or hike. Good atmosphere and lots of stuff to do though. Tubing was awesome and you end at the campground. Nice store and food options on the grounds

What to do

Disc golf adventures: Ionia State Recreation Area features a highly-rated disc golf course that campers consistently praise. One visitor noted, "There is a disc golf course, mountain bike trail, equestrian trails, hiking trails, a beautiful no wake lake perfect for swimming, kayaking, or fishing." The course offers varied terrain and is well-maintained compared to other amenities.

Hiking trail exploration: Bertha Brock County Park offers three marked hiking trails including the popular Turkey Trail. A day visitor shared, "The trail was well marked but got quite confusing about 3/4 in. Tons of fun things to see here, beautiful stone bridges." Trail maps are available at the park entrance for $2 admission.

Horse riding experiences: Families can enjoy guided horseback riding at Double RR Ranch RV Resort, with trails crossing through shallow river sections. A camper described the experience as "Very easy for inexperienced riders and kids" and mentioned seeing "lots of wildlife" during their stay at the riverfront sites.

What campers like

Lake swimming access: Ionia State Recreation Area offers a sandy beach on Sessions Lake that campers value for its kid-friendly shoreline. A reviewer explained, "The beach is fantastic especially for little kids who might not be the best swimmers ready for Lake Michigan or lakes with lots of boats and waves to deal with. Nice and sandy and a nice store and ice cream shop at the beach."

Private lake activities: Scalley Lake Park Campground features a motor-free lake environment that creates a peaceful setting. A camper described it as an "Amazing spot away from the city! Private lake with no motors so it is very quiet and peaceful!!!" The campground offers cabin rentals with lake views that another reviewer called "clean and nice."

Riverfront camping: Many campers seek out the river sites at Double RR Ranch for water-based activities. One reviewer specifically mentioned the appeal: "Rivers are just fun for fishing, throwing stones, canoeing." The campground combines these water features with other amenities including a golf course and seasonal hayrides for children.

What you should know

Site privacy varies considerably: Campgrounds in the Belding area offer different levels of privacy and spacing. At Wabasis Lake, one camper advised, "Get cozy with your very close neighbor campers. Little or no tree cover and tight sites make it good for camping with friends or making new ones." This contrasts with Bertha Brock which offers more dispersed sites.

Shower and bathroom conditions: Facilities range widely between campgrounds. At Snow Lake Kampground, campers get full hookup sites with modern facilities, but one reviewer noted that at Ionia State Recreation Area, "There is only one bathroom for the campground so it can be a bit busy and it could probably use an update."

Seasonal crowds: Summer weekends see significantly higher usage, especially at water-adjacent sites. One visitor to Wabasis Lake observed, "Because it's so close to Grand Rapids and some other cities, it typically is full on the weekends. Booking a site can be troublesome." Weekday camping provides a more peaceful experience at most area campgrounds.

Tips for camping with families

Theme weekends for kids: Snow Lake Kampground runs regular themed activity weekends that appeal to families. A camper described their experience: "We stayed when they had the country western weekend. They had all kinds of stuff going on for kids. Pony rides, wagon rides, petting zoo, games and activities." Check their calendar when planning visits.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature central playgrounds that allow parents to watch from nearby sites. At Wabasis Lake County Park, a visitor noted, "There is a playground in the center which was very handy for our little ones. They could play and we could watch from our site."

Swimming considerations: Lake water quality varies seasonally at area campgrounds. One Wabasis Lake visitor warned, "Unfortunately this summer swimmers itch got us!" while another mentioned, "The lake is incredibly shallow. (But that makes for a very nice beach!)" Parents should check current conditions before planning water activities.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional equipment for RV leveling. A Wabasis Lake camper advised, "Some of the sites are a little uneven (the camper needed wood blocks underneath it so that the wheels weren't off the ground after leveling)." Bringing leveling blocks is recommended.

Campground layout constraints: Ionia State Recreation Area presents some logistical challenges for RVers. One camper observed, "The campground itself is very nice, but you may find the activities are a short drive away from your site to get there. The sites are all a little bit shallow especially if you have a larger travel trailer you may find it a bit tight."

Firewood sizing issues: Multiple campgrounds sell firewood, but pieces are often oversized. A Wabasis Lake visitor mentioned, "If there is a downfall, it would be that the pieces of wood that can be bought were huge! They had to be cut smaller to use well." RVers should pack a hatchet or small axe for processing firewood.
