What you should know
Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between campgrounds. At Tyler Creek, "The bathrooms are in terrible shape. They need major repairs. I did see the staff cleaning them several times but they are in such awful shape it didn't really make a difference," reports Angela J.
Reservation timing: Book well in advance for weekend stays, especially at state parks. At Sleepy Hollow, "Every year they put together an awesome Halloween trick or treat weekend, but be sure to book the day of six months before because otherwise you will not get a site," advises Stephanie C.
Yurt camping options: Yurt camping near Belding, Michigan primarily focuses on Snow Lake Kampground, with family activities throughout summer. "Each weekend they have a theme. We stayed when they had the country western weekend. They had all kinds of stuff going on for kids. Pony rides, wagon rides, petting zoo, games and activities," notes Clint.
Tips for camping with families
Playground amenities: Welcome Woods Family Campground offers play structures for children. "My kids loved the playground! They also have a dock you can rent space and keep your boat in the lake. Great fishing," says Joie V.
Beach access: Ionia State Recreation Area features a sandy beach with gentle shoreline. "The beach is fantastic especially for little kids who might not be the best swimmers ready for Lake Michigan or lakes with lots of boats and waves to deal with. Nice and sandy and a nice store and ice cream shop at the beach," explains Joshua E.
Organized activities: Snow Lake Kampground runs themed weekends during summer. "They had a country music concert in the park one evening. The pool was very nice, but we found at times it was extremely busy," notes Clint.
Tips for RVers
Site selection: Request pull-through sites or riverfront locations when available. At Maple River Campground, campers can position parallel to water rather than backing in, providing better views and easier setup.
Utility planning: Electric hookups can be challenging to reach at some parks. "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension," warns Nick W. about Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground.
Site levelness: Prepare for uneven terrain at many campgrounds. "To say the sites are uneven is putting it mildly. For 15 sites, you seriously can't level them??" notes Michael S. about primitive sites at Ionia Recreation Area.
