    Poncho's Pond RV Park

    Loved It!

This park is a very nice RV park. All 257 sites are full hook-up (with cable), level, and have paved patios and for a $2 up charge you can get a paved site. Our site was super long (over 100’) and had a nice view of the large pond. There is pretty good separation between sites and on one side of us were large bushes that added privacy from our neighbors and the adjacent pathway. There are tent sites set off along one area of the park near the bathrooms. There are a few trees among the tent sites but they are not very private and located near the garbage dumpsters/recycle bins and on a main exit thoroughfare. There are also three “haciendas” for rent.

One of my favorite features of the campground was the fitness center. Poncho and his wife are triathletes so the facility is top notch with weight machines, free weights, cycles, treadmills, elliptical, medicine balls, and lots of bands. There are three heated pool on the property – two outdoor and one indoor with and two spas. Since we were there in mid-October the outdoor pools were closed but the indoor hot tub and pool were open (albeit, super crowded on the weekend with kids). There are two laundry rooms and three bathrooms that are very modern and clean. One of the cable television stations displays security camera footage around the property which was nice because I could see how full the laundry was before carrying all my stuff there. There is a game room for kids, playground, shuffleboard, and a clubhouse. There is a stocked pond on the property but it is only for kids (17 and under) to fish in. Cable television yielded 55 channels and WiFi was available at our site with a decent signal. The campground is very well-maintained with nicely mowed grass. The grounds crew was always working but they were not annoying with constant loud machines. There is a railroad track that runs behind the park but it does not get a lot of use so the noise was not too bad. If you don’t want to be near the tracks, ask for a site away from the south side of the park. There is an off-leash dog park but it really is too small and narrow for big dogs.

The campground is very convenient to lots of shopping and restaurants and within walking distance of a McDonalds, fruit market, drug store and grocery. Downtown Ludington is only about five minutes away which has a cute downtown with shopping, galleries, and restaurants. Ludington State Park is about 15 minutes away and has miles and miles of hiking trails and beach access. There is also a city park downtown which is along Lake Michigan with beach access and lots of room for a nice walk (but dogs are not allowed). The office staff was super helpful pointed out places to hike and things to do for the weekend. Also loved that they gave us a choice of sites and let us drive around the campground (in their golf cart) and pick out the one we wanted.

We camped here in an RV and really couldn’t find anything we didn’t like about it. New customers get a 10% discount and during our stay we fell into low season and nightly rates were discounted 50%. So for $28/night we got a really nice site with lots of amenities in a great location. If you are looking for a nice RV park at a great price near a nice coastal Michigan town, give this place a try.

D.H. Day Campground — Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

    D.H. Day Campground

Overall the campground has a very pleasant and rustic charm. The foliage helps create privacy but the campsites are close in proximity overall. The one warning that should be more clearly indicated is that there is poison ivy surrounding every single site so please be aware if you have pets and small children. The fact that there was so much poison ivy is the only reason I gave it four stars. Lake Michigan is a short walk away and you are able to walk to sleeping bear dunes along the beach. For those who would like convenience Glen Arbor is only five minutes down the main road and has a ton of restaurants, parks and a nice grocery store.

    Dunes Harbor Family Camp

    Hands down favorite campground!

    This place is FUN!!!

The campground in itself is a blast. The waterpark, playground, hammock area, swings, biggest sand box ever, all the activities, and can’t forget the ice cream shop!!!

Then add in ATV access from the campground, waterfront sites to park your jet skis, and horse rides onsite!!

We never really wanted to leave! The staff were awesome! The grounds are well maintained and they have the best grass. Lol

My only suggestion would be to put in a fenced in dog park, but other than that, this is a must stop if ever in the Silver Lake area.

    Poncho's Pond RV Park

One of the best campgrounds I've been too!

The Layout of the campground is great. Perfect to bring your pets. Nice pools and close enough to the state park to go tubing or a beach day at Lake Michigan.  Everything is close so you are not missing anything.

    Rvino - Camp Cadillac, LLC

    Great private campground

Great little campground just on the outskirts of Cadillac. Great rates especially for full hookups. This was our first time at this park, we originally had a site next to the pool, but quickly realized our TT would not fit due to the trees. The front desk quickly changed our site and we were good to go. All sites were well maintained, they had a petting zoo (goats) and a store with a little game room in it. I would definitely come back.

Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness - Green Road

Nice boondocking spot with access to Lake Michigan!

Spent a few nights here enjoying Manistee National Forest and Lake Michigan. During our stay we relocated from our original site to a bigger site further down the road heading south. Sites ranged from spacious to road-side turnouts with a wide range between. Verizon service was fair. Road access was fair as well but better suited for smaller rigs due to tight roads and numerous curves. Will definitely stay again next time we visit Michigan!

    Silver Lake State Park Campground

    Holiday Park Campground

Silver lake is one of the most beautiful areas you can go in all of Michigan. With dunes of it's own, & a perfect, calm crystal lake - it's great for swimming, kayaking and photography. Holiday Park campground was on the south shore of the lake, had a swim area, boat launch, and was immaculate. Pets were allowed and sites were very level for trailers. All sites had electric hook ups and they are sectioned out by environment, like woods, lakeside, up on the ridge line, and there's even island sites. I prefer the lake and island sites if you can get them. There's something about waking up to that lake that is dreamy!

    Orchard Beach State Park Campground

    no beach access

Pretty standard Michigan State Park campground. Nice staff. Park maintenance is currently building a wood fence to keep folks away from steep bluff edge. Views of Lake Michigan fairly limited. If these were improved, this would be a much more popular park. I was very disappointed that their stairs to beach had been eroded near its base so you could no longer access beach but had to drive to one of two local beaches. I stayed one night and unfortunately had to camp next to a group who had a very barky, anxious large dog. Some folks need to leave their poorly trained dogs at home.

    Lake Michigan Recreation Area

    Beautiful and diverse spots!

Awesome beach and/or forest locations for camping! Spots near the parking are but also some spots you can hike to. Beautiful all around. And pet friendly!

Guide to Manistee

Manistee National Forest spans approximately 540,000 acres in western Michigan with over 5,800 miles of streams and 2,400 miles of trails. Seasonal dispersed camping areas typically open from April through November, depending on snow conditions. Lake Michigan shoreline campsites experience temperature swings of 15-25°F between day and night, even in summer months.

What to do

Hiking to Lake Michigan shorelines: Access beautiful beach views through forested trails at Lake Michigan Recreation Area. "There are hiking trails, which I can't speak to because we had 2 littles with us, but looking at the map and just being in the area, I'm sure the trails were awesome," notes Rachael S.

Sand dune exploration: Trek through some of Michigan's most distinctive dune ecosystems. "Nordhouse Dunes is a beautiful hidden gem. This was my first backpacking adventure and a wonderful experience. The hike from the parking lot is about a mile through some hilly sand so it was a nice little workout," reports Merry L.

Fishing opportunities: Cast from riverside sites along the Manistee River. "They have a boat launch with rentals for boats, kayaks, and even a little fishing charter type deal if you'd like. Manistee river is very nice to kayak and go fishing," explains Shawn M. from Matson's Big Manistee River Campground.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing: Winter camping options exist for cold-weather enthusiasts. "Winter camped in Pines Mini Cabin. Awesome trails for hiking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. Lots of phenomenal snow this year!" shares Kathie M.

What campers like

Beach access with fewer crowds: Some sites offer quieter Lake Michigan beach experiences. "Great place to camp without the crowds, but close to Traverse City, Sleeping Bear, etc," mentions Cynthia H. about Orchard Beach State Park Campground.

Spacious dispersed camping: Free camping options with room to spread out. "Drove out to this campsite after spending the day swimming in Lake Michigan at the Recreation area which is down the road. There's ~15 sites down this road, and each of them were gorgeous, some very large and very private," explains Heidi H. about Green Road Dispersed - Manistee NF.

Riverfront tent sites: Several campgrounds offer water-adjacent tent camping. "Tent sites are right on the river. Great atmosphere, relaxed, everyone seemed to be on the same page while camping there," notes Shawn M.

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention well-maintained bathrooms. "The bathrooms are clean, the staff is friendly, and the lake views are spectacular. Plus, the cute town of Manistee is nearby with three gorgeous public beaches, tasty restaurants, and ample shopping," Richard E. observes.

What you should know

Site privacy varies significantly: Some campgrounds have tightly packed sites while others offer seclusion. "Unfortunately, the sites are as compact and close together as possible. I usually enjoy the aroma of a campfire, but in the evening if all the sites are full, a smogtacular smoke cloud hovers over this campground," warns Richard E.

Beach access limitations: High water levels affect beach access at certain campgrounds. "Due to erosion, the stairs to the beach have been closed which forces campers to conglomerate even more closely together," notes Richard E.

Rough access roads: Some dispersed camping areas require careful navigation. "Roads are great until you get to the road to camp. There are very large holes and dips, thankfully we found a spot right away before we got in far," cautions Bobbi Jo K. about Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness - Green Road.

Cell service variability: Coverage is inconsistent throughout the forest. "Verizon service was fair. Road access was fair as well but better suited for smaller rigs due to tight roads and numerous curves," explains Connor N.

Tips for camping with families

Mini cabins for winter camping: Heated options for family trips during colder months. "Bunk beds with one a double - sleeps 5 total. Heat, electricity, mini fridge, microwave, table and 4 chairs. Well built and very clean. Outside fire pit and BBQ grill for summer," describes Kathie M. about Pines Campground — Ludington State Park.

Middle-of-loop sites for play space: Some campgrounds offer common areas for children. "We booked three neighboring sites on the interior of the loop for some group tent camping. Theres an awesome grass avenue that runs down the middle of the sites in the inner loop, marked off so there are no tents in the area, but it gives you great removal from the campers behind you, and allows for all manner of games," shares Jennifer O.

Dog-friendly options: Most campgrounds welcome pets with leash requirements. "Dispersed camping is allowed and pets are welcomed. I didn't see any ticks or many insects but we camped by the lake trail which was windy and chilly," notes Den R.

Distance considerations: Some attractions require planning for families with small children. "A 2 mile hike in beach spot with beautiful views. Lots a variation in how great each spot is, but absolutely worth it. No amenities at all," warns Nicole B. about Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness.

Tips from RVers

Site positioning flexibility: Some campgrounds allow campers to arrange their setups as desired. "We were directed here after learning the state park was closed. The staff were absolutely wonderful. We came on bicycles and they let us stay only one night even though the typical minimum stay is 2 nights," shares Emily M. about Insta-Launch Campground & Marina.

High clearance recommendations: For dispersed camping areas, vehicle clearance matters. "This was our first time boondocking in this area. It was beautiful, especially in the fall. Had a 19 foot trailer with high clearance (only trailer brave enough to camp here!)," notes Bobbi Jo K.

Parking limitations: Popular areas can fill quickly during peak season. "Due to how busy it was, we ended up parking a half mile down the road. By the time we left there was about a mile of cars parked after us. Seems to be a very busy spot on the weekends," reports Bradley B.

Campsite size considerations: Ensure your rig fits the available sites. "Spacious campsites with good visible/verizon service. We did not get service with T-Mobile. It has a pit toilet, fire pits, and picnic tables," advises AbeAndMel_Vantravels.
