The Best Hike-In Camping Near Huron-Manistee National Forests, Michigan

We are located approximately 90 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, and 40 miles northeast of Ludington. We are nestled into the heart of Michigan's Manistee National Forest, where there are limitless opportunities for all types of outdoor recreation activities.

We welcome you to our quiet, family atmosphere park, where a clean, well kept park and a friendly atmosphere are our promise to you. The 6 1/2 acre park has 250 feet of waterfront on Seaman Lake, where park patrons can swim, boat, or fish in the spring fed lake.

Spend the day relaxing in front of your campfire in one of our spacious, grassy campsites; enjoy the enchanting quiet of Seaman Lake at our beachfront; relax by our swimming pool; or spend the day exploring with your ORV on the nearby trail system. Challenge the waters of the Pine River by canoe, or find a private trout fishing hole on the Little Manistee River. Whatever you do, the choice is yours... it is your Leisure Time!

There is a network of ORV trails available for the trail riding enthusiast that connects to a statewide system of trails. We offer 2017 Trail Maps in the camp store - pick yours up today.

The Pine River and Pere Marquette River are both very popular canoeing rivers, there are numerous canoe liveries available in the area.

Both the Pine and the Pere Marquette rivers boast excellent spring and fall salmon runs. People come from all over to fish these runs. Area lakes, including Seaman Lake where the campground is, have some of the best fishing available in the state.Seaman Lake even claims two (yes two!) state record largemouth bass. People fish the area lakes for bass, pike, bluegill, and perch. The Little Manistee River is a popular fishery for the trout fisherman, and Lake Michigan has countless charter boats that can take you on a deep sea type of fishing expedition.

## Overview

Seaton Creek Campground adjoins Seaton Creek and is at the upper end of the backwater of Hodenpyl Dam Pond on the Big Manistee River. The forest surrounding the campground is mostly pine and the sites are rustic. The closest town is Mesick.

## Recreation

The surrounding waters offer excellent fishing opportunities for both panfish (perch, bluegil, crappie, sunfish) and game fish (trout, bass, pike, salmon). For State Fishing Regulations consult the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website, website [ http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/ ](http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/). Kayakers may access the campground by traveling up the very shallow Seaton Creek, however canoeing is not recommended unless you're putting in at the Hodenpyl Backwaters. From there, you can canoe the Big Manistee. There is a connector trail to the Manistee River Trail from this site. The North Country National Scenic Trail can be reached by crossing the suspension bridge over the Manistee River. The Upper Branch Trailhead is also nearby. 

## Facilities

Two group sites and 17 family sites area situated near a picnic area on the Hodenpyl Backwater of the Manistee River. There are two vault restroom buildings. Sites have fire rings and picnic tables. Drinking water is available.

## Natural Features

**The terrain surrounding Hodenpyl Dam Pond is characterized as hilly with a mix of hardwoods and conifers. Briar Hill, which has the second-highest elevation in the lower peninsula, is located about five miles east of Hodenpyl Dam Pond. A number of other tributaries enter Hodenpyl Dam Pond from the east, flowing off the slopes of Briar Hill. These streams are characterized by very high gradient and cold temperatures. They include Seaton Creek, Small Creek, Preston Creek, Cripple Creek, and several unnamed streams. These streams mostly host a mix of brown and brook trout, although a few have only brook trout. The trailhead for the Manistee River Trail is within the campground. ******

## Overview

Peterson Bridge Campground is located on the Pine River in Michigan's Manistee National Forest. The location on the river makes it ideal for canoeists and those looking to experience the adventure of this swift moving river.

## Recreation

With access to the river so close, floating the Pine River is a popular activity at Peterson Bridge. Several locations near the campground offer canoe rentals. Supporting outstanding trout fishing, the Pine River is also a "Blue Ribbon" cold-water fishery. ## Facilities

The facility offers several tent sites which are walk-in only. Those tent sites on the river bank can also be accessed from the river.  
In addition, the facility offers RV sites with many of the sites at this facility offering shade and seclusion. 

## Natural Features

The Pine River is well known as one of the most outstanding canoeing and trout fishing rivers in the Midwest. The river gradient is 7% and, depending upon the season, offers the fasted average flow of any river in lower Michigan. The lower 26 miles of the Pine River have been designated a National Wild and Scenic River.

The Manton Trails RV Park& Campground has 146 sites, nestled on 80 acres and a campground surrounded by State land and close to the State’s Snowmobile/ORV Trail Head of the Manistee National Forest. Our bathhouse is clean, and our showers are hot. We are located 15 minutes north of Cadillac and 30 minutes SE of Traverse City. Manton Trails welcomes families, couples, and groups looking to relax, reconnect with family, and enjoy all the wonders of nature. The property also has event facilities that can be rented for group meetings, weddings, and activities. There are many canoe liveries near Manton Trails which provide an excellent nautical Manistee River experience for your family. If some of your party would prefer to stay within four walls rather than camping, they can reserve a room at the Manton Hotel located on the property.

Sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. No reservations. 26 sites for tent and small trailer use located on the scenic Pine River. This campground offers opportunity for hiking and mountain biking on its Silver Creek Pathway. Nearby canoe landing provides access to the river. Rustic campground includes vault toilets and potable water from well hand pump.

Baxter Bridge State Forest Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the areas day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90s during the day and 50s to 70s at night. Winters are cold, with daytime highs in the 20s to 30s and lows in the 10s and 20s; snow is usually on the ground from late November through March. Natural Features: The campground lies in a wooded area within walking distance of the Platte River and less than two miles away from the beaches of Lake Michigan. Although the lakeshore is long and narrow, it has northern hardwood and conifer forests, abandoned farm meadows, wetlands, lakes, streams, bogs and splendid examples of a glacially formed landscape. The most prominent features in the park, and those for which it is named, are the perched sand dunes above Lake Michigan. The overlooks at Sleeping Bear, Empire and Pyramid Point bluffs are about 400 feet above the lake. With 65 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and numerous inland lakes and streams, the park is wonderfully water-oriented. Recreation: Campers can hike, canoe, kayak and fish on the river or the lake. There are canoe rentals at nearby Platte River Point, where the river meets the lake (the point also has beach access for those wishing to drive there). The Platte Plains trail system boasts more than 25 miles of trails, some of which can be accessed a short walk away from the campground. Trails to the primitive White Pine backcountry campground are also close by. Facilities: This facility is well-maintained, well-organized and offers a wide variety of sites, including back-in and pull-through sites with electric hookups for RVs, tent-only sites, walk-in sites, group sites (hike-in, tent-only) and a nearby backcountry campground. Each site has a campfire ring and picnic table. Each loop has restrooms with flush toilets and sinks. Hot showers are also available.
