    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

    Covert Park Beach & Campground

    Cute, family owned, about average

Cute little camp store, and definitely well removed. The site is situated in a little valley between the dunes and the hills of town. The sites are surprisingly large, but the rules are insanely strict - this is definitely a site catering to RV campers not tent campers. We were admonished for having 3 medium tents on a site that easily could have facilitated 5, while nearby RVs had their unit, a screened gazebo, a regular tent, a shade tent, multiple cars, and jetskis on their sites. Most of the RVs here seem to set up camp for weeks at a time, meaning there is a LOT of ambient light from their laser shows, footpath solar lights, fairly lights, etc.

Other reviews I read online warned the bathrooms were bad - if you get the north loop the bathroom is passable. Cinderblock walls, and ineffective fans make for a pretty swampy experience, but it IS a camp bathroom. The main bathhouse really is disgusting, even by camp standards. It is the one the day trippers can use when they come to the beach, and it shows the wear. Many of the stalls don't have doors, several toilets were totally clogged, and there are June bugs and mosquitos swarming the place.

The beach is great, removed and uncrowded even with the day trippers, the access to Lake Michigan was definitely appreciated in July!

We did pass by the hike-in rustic sites and they looked great. Situated at the top of one of the dune hills, very forested and removed from the nonsense RV campers bring, I'd be willing to come back and try these sites.

    Black River Trails Campground

Very nice, modern campground with new owners!

This was a great little campground near South Haven, MI. We stayed in a small "RV Site" spot on the campground and that gave us our own electrical/water hookup. Each site comes with a picnic table, fire pit, and ample enough space. We weren't "on top" of the people next to us.

We wanted to camp, and be close to the local beaches and this was a perfect location to camp at night then drive to South Haven Beach (maybe 10 min drive if that). They offered showers, bathrooms and even had kayak/canoe trips if we had stayed there during the day.

The owners checked up on us and told us all about the local brewery and winery spots and offered us tons of info on the area. They're new owners, very friendly and eager to turn this into a successful campground! I'd highly recommend giving this place a try.

Hidden Ridge RV Resort, A Sun RV Resort

    Large RV resort!

We had a great time camping at Hidden Ridge. Amenities were great, everything well kept and clean. This park is very big. Seems to have a lot of seasonal campers there but still spots for the vacationers too. The pool was nice, and the playground very fun for kids. Sunday morning they have Cinnamon Roll delivery to your campsite! Only a couple of negatives to report there isn’t much close the the campground at all. Like the closest gas station is 15 miles. Not really any fast food restaurants either. Obviously not a deal breaker, but just something to be prepared for. And there is a snack bar at the campground, but for other things you’ll have to go further out. Second, I found it odd the there isn’t trash pickup at the site. And the only trash bin we could find was at the entrance of the grounds (which was quite a distance from 241 our site). Just seems places this big and at this price range offer trash pick up at the site. Again, not a deal breaker but just a nuisance I guess. Would definitely recommend and would return to stay if in the area.

    Covert Park Beach & Campground

    Lake Michigan

Cons: The actual campground was disappointing, the map was not true to date and most sites the electrical box and water hook up is on the wrong side of the site.

Bring extra line... we have 50ft hose so we were fine there ( line goes through the middle of the site) and 25ft electrical and had to re adjust the camper a few times so it would reach.

The campground allows anyone to buy daily passes for the beach so the beach can get crowded. Lots of traffic in and out.

Beach is washing away, black sand for most of it, maybe due to storm. Still plenty when we went 7/2020 for kids to play.

Pros: Lake Michigan is right there! We walked down to sunset and it was a 5 min walk max.

I’ll stay at any campground to have Lake Michigan in walking distance

They do have two separate paths to the lake, one stair case (several steps) and other was a flat path 100 yards or so then maybe 10 steps down to beach. The flat path had a lot of traffic from daily users

Play set was ok. One for smaller kids and one for bigger. Slide, few swings, nothing to big.

New wash house, rinse off after lake play.

Seasonal members were very informative and friendly, not so informative in office.

Campground was very quiet at dark.

I will give a 4 because we could walk out of our camper to Lake Michigan, beautiful!

What to do

Lake activities: Sessions Lake at Ionia State Recreation Area provides a no-wake environment perfect for peaceful paddling. "There are a couple hundred sites and most of them were full. Our site was right across from an access trail to the blue hiking trail," notes one visitor. The recreation area maintains multiple lake access points for fishing, kayaking, and swimming.

Mountain biking: Fort Custer Recreation Area offers extensive trail systems specifically designed for mountain biking enthusiasts. "We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite. We loved our site as it's close to the trails for riding," shares Joel K. The trails accommodate beginners and experienced riders with varying difficulty levels.

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds provide fishing access, including Welcome Woods Family Campground with its lake access points. According to Stacia L., the campground offers "Lake, dump station, well stocked store, some shaded sites, clean bathrooms by the store, pit toilets throughout the campground." Most fishing areas don't require additional permits beyond a Michigan fishing license.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the secluded feel at Fort Custer Recreation Area. "We just stayed at 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!" reports Hannah. The vegetation between sites provides natural screening at many campgrounds in the area.

Family-friendly activities: Hungry Horse Campground receives high marks for its organized recreation. "They have a lake/beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake. They also have a massive slip 'n slide, zip lining, and a rock climbing wall," writes Bailey C. The campground schedules regular weekend activities throughout the summer.

Clean facilities: Luxury camping options like Michawana Campground maintain well-kept amenities. "The bath houses are huge and well taken care of," notes one reviewer, while another mentions, "They have a pool, splash pad, arcade, bounce pad, playground, outdoor sports area, hayrides, crafts, store, pond for fishing, golf cart rental."

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most luxury camping facilities near Hickory Corners operate seasonally. Hidden Ridge RV Resort operates from April 1 to October 30, while Michawana Campground runs from April 21 to October 16.

Varying hookup options: Campgrounds offer different utility setups. At Fort Custer, "Sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," explains VB S. When booking, confirm whether your site has water, electric, or full hookups.

Insect preparation: The wooded setting means insects can be prevalent. "Lots need mowing so lots of bugs, bring insect repellent," advises Cathy Y. about Fort Custer Recreation Area. Bug spray is essential, particularly during early summer months.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between locations. At Welcome Woods, one reviewer noted, "The vaulted toilets were always gross," while others mention some campgrounds have modern, well-maintained facilities.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation access: Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday provides kid-friendly water options. "There are a lot of lodging options, tons of kids activities, both free and for a small fee, great pool, cafe and store!" writes Melissa B. The campground is approximately 15 minutes from Lake Michigan beaches.

Look for organized activities: Many campgrounds schedule regular kids' programming. "The campground had kids playing everywhere but it was still quiet and very clean," notes Lisa P. about Hungry Horse Campground. Ask about scheduled events when booking.

Consider proximity to restrooms: When selecting sites with children, bathroom location matters. At Fort Custer, "Our site was on the far end of a loop. This meant a longer walk to the restrooms and showers," explains Art S. Request sites closer to facilities when traveling with young children.

Site selection for shade: During summer, tree cover becomes important. At Fort Custer, a reviewer cautions, "It was overcast upon arrival only to have the sun shine down the next day. We soon found out that there was enough clearing in the treetops to give our camp full sun for most of the day."

Tips from RVers

Dump station timing: At Fort Custer Recreation Area, "Since there are no water or sewer hook ups, lines at the dump/fill station can get long," warns Bob B. Plan to use dump facilities during off-peak hours, typically mid-afternoon on non-checkout days.

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional preparation. At Ionia State Recreation Area, "To say the sites are uneven is putting it mildly. For 15 sites, you seriously can't level them?" notes Michael S. Bring leveling blocks and survey your site before setting up.

Seasonal reservation planning: For luxury camping near Hickory Corners during peak season, advance booking is essential. Hidden Ridge RV Resort typically fills quickly, especially for holiday weekends. "All sites include a concrete pad, fire ring and full hook-up. 120/150 amp," explains Kathleen D.
