    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Muskegon KOA

    Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Snapbuds at Muskegon State Park Lake Michigan Campground

    Campground Review

Lake Michigan Campground in Muskegon State Park was a great place to pull in for the night. We had ice cream for supper at the adjacent ice cream shop (where they advertised a free cone with your firewood purchase). We pulled in and settled into our cabin with enough time to enjoy sunset over Lake Michigan from the stairs and overlooks along the beach. The campground is well kept and has a nice shady canopy. The sites are fairly large, but there are no shrubs or structures to provide privacy from neighbors. We reserved a camping cabin and found it clean and functional with power, 4 beds (bunks), mini fridge and microwave. The showers were good sized with plenty of hot water, but being beach style, there was a lot of bug access. Expect to shower with some insects. I was a frustrated birder - I could hear the birds but couldn’t pick them out visually since they were all up so high with no low cover. All in all I would say this is a great campground for beach access, better in the cabins or an RV than in a tent since there isn’t much privacy.

    Ranger Review:

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to review occasionally. On this trip I had a chance to try out Snapbuds, an earbud detangling system. We received the snapbuds before we left Colorado and used the enclosed guide to get them set up on my earbuds - it was a snap! The instructions say they can’t be repositioned once in place, so we were cautious about setting them up right the first time. I don’t use my earbuds often on road trips since I’m the only driver and I like to listen for birds on a walk - but after a few long days in the car with my kids choosing the playlists, this mamma was super excited to whip my earbuds out! I had them shoved in the back of my purse where we’d been rummaging around for various things over the course of the trip, so they had every opportunity to be a tangled mess - but they came out in a neat little wad and unraveled easily to take me away from the teens fighting over beds. I was pleased with how neat they stayed. My one word of caution is that the magnets really like to stick together, and if you create slack while wearing your earbuds (by bending to pick up a perfect rock or acorn, for instance) they have a tendency to find one another and shorten your cord, potentially dislodging your earbud when you straighten back up.

    Ed H. Henning Park

Nice campground, very convenient for river trips.

We stay here at least once a year and do an annual river trip with a bunch friends. It's a nice campground with a small park, pond, full bathrooms, group sites, and even a couple small cabins. It's great for river trips since we go upstream and can float all the way into camp and no worry about driving. We make a run the next morning for coffee and to pick up the vehicles left at the launch.

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Campground within walking distance to Lake MI beach

Stayed in Mini Cabin #16 over New Years. Hoped to try Luge at the adventure park but no snow and temps too warm prior to our trip. Cabin sleeps 4 in 2 bunk beds. Mini frig, microwave and table with chairs. Electricity and heat. Great choice for winter camping. Sites look really close together for summer camping. I did not like the road being so close for road noise. Kids swing set needs updated. Pit ADA toilet very clean. Phenomenal lake overlook and steps to beautiful beach.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort-South Haven, MI

This is my top pick for South Haven

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

Don’t forget to go to Sherman’s!!

There was a forecast or rain, don’t mind the tarp

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Muskegon State Park - Lake Michigan Campground

This was our second time Camping at Muskegon State Park. The first time we camped at the Channel Campground (not so great), and this time we camped at the Lake Michigan Campground. This campground was easily the better of the two. Tons of tall trees, HUGE campsites with electrical hookups, picnic tables, and fire-rings. I believe you're allowed to have up to 6 people per-site, and you would have no problem fitting everyone. There were clean restrooms and private showers. There are steps that lead straight from the campground to a small beach right on Lake Michigan. Firewood & ice are sold at the campground office, and there's also a small privately owned ice-cream shop at the north end of the campground that sells wood & ice.

There's a boat ramp right down the road at Snug Harbor, and the fishing is great. It's also just a short drive to a canoe/kayak launch on the Muskegon river. The downtown area is about a 20-25 minute drive around the lake, but it has some cool military museums including a WW2 submarine and a transport ship that was used in D-Day. Also, two pretty solid breweries.

Although we were there in the summer, this campground is right across the street from Muskegon's Winter Sports Park. The park has cross-country skiing trails, a permanent luge track, a roller-luge track, and i think an ice skating track through the woods. We're looking forward to taking a winter trip up here to give everything a try!

    Oak Grove Resort & Campground

Great RV Resort close to Lake Michigan

Clean family friendly RV Resort. Pool, hot tub, modern restrooms and showers, playground, laundry and bike rentals. I believe all the sites are full hookup, cable t.v. and wi/fi. Less than a mile to Lake Michigan and close to boat launch and Lake Macatawa.

Guide to Byron Center

Cabin rental options around Byron Center offer overnight accommodations within natural surroundings of southwestern Michigan. Most properties are located between the Grand River watershed and the rural farmlands east of Lake Michigan. The region experiences four distinct seasons with hot summers, snowy winters, and peak camping from May through September when average temperatures range between 60-85°F.

What to do

Water activities and fishing: Hidden Ridge RV Resort features catch-and-release fishing on its small lake. "We have a pond for cat and release fishing, and a great slip and slide for the kids on a hot day," notes Greg N. in his review of the resort. Many visitors bring their own fishing gear to take advantage of this amenity.

Biking and trails: Fort Custer Recreation Area offers extensive trail systems for outdoor enthusiasts. "Endless hiking trails and two lakes where you can fish, swim, and boat," shares Bob B., who visited frequently during childhood. The recreation area maintains separate trails for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding.

Golfing options: Cabins near Byron Center provide convenient access to camping with golf course amenities. Tyler Creek combines camping with on-site golfing opportunities. As reviewer Miles D. mentions, "Some small places to explore for some quick walks. All around a good place to land for a few nights." The clubhouse provides additional entertainment with games and drinks.

What campers like

Indoor pool access: Many visitors appreciate the unique indoor swimming facilities at Indian Valley Campground. As Nicole C. explains, "The indoor pool was great for the preseason camping! Being there in early May, when it was rainy we were happy to have that amenity." This feature allows cabin guests to swim regardless of weather conditions.

Resort-style amenities: Seasonal cabin rentals often include access to premium facilities. At TriPonds Family Camp Resort, Jeffrey T. shares, "One of the best family camp grounds we've stayed at. Cabins and cottages are great (book early) nice RV sites. On-site food is really good compared to most." The property maintains a swimming pool, mini-golf course, and food service.

Privacy options: Cabin rental properties vary in terms of seclusion and spacing. Fort Custer Recreation Area provides more isolated accommodations according to Hannah, who reports: "We just stayed at [site] 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!" For those seeking privacy, asking about site locations when booking cabins can help secure more secluded options.

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most cabin rentals in the region operate on limited schedules. According to Beth H., who visited Hidden Ridge RV Resort, "Not really any fast food restaurants either. Obviously not a deal breaker, but just something to be prepared for." She also notes that "there isn't much close to the campground at all. Like the closest gas station is 15 miles."

Varying cabin conditions: Facility maintenance differs between properties. At Tyler Creek, Angela J. observes, "The bathrooms are in terrible shape. They need major repairs. I did see the staff cleaning them several times but they are in such awful shape it didn't really make a difference." Always check recent reviews when booking cabin accommodations.

Booking requirements: Cabins fill quickly during summer months. For Oak Grove Resort, one visitor mentions, "Very well maintained, very clean, quiet, large sites and close to so many amenities!" Reservations typically open 6-12 months in advance for peak seasons, with most properties requiring deposits.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Families seeking cabin rentals with children's activities should consider specific properties. Melissa M. describes Hidden Ridge: "Kid friendly! This park always finds away to having something fun for the kids to do. Pool, splash pad, arcade, bounce pad, playground, outdoor sports area, hayrides, crafts, store, pond for fishing, golf cart rental."

Weather contingencies: Michigan weather can change quickly, making indoor options important. TriPonds Family Camp Resort offers multiple activities regardless of conditions. Liz notes, "Rain can cause some rather large puddles (which my kids immensely enjoy) but they usually dry up quickly."

Special events: Hungry Horse Campground organizes regular children's programming. Clint reports, "They also offered plenty of activities throughout the weekend. Great place. Will definitely go back." Robin D. adds, "We have been camping here for 13 years. We love how kid and adult friendly it is and it's super clean!" Halloween weekends are particularly popular at many area campgrounds.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When booking cabins near Byron Center, consider site characteristics carefully. At Oak Grove Resort, david H. explains, "Family of 5 (3 kids under 6) looking for a reasonably close place to Lake Michigan. Oak Grove was the perfect stay for us! Very well maintained, very clean, quiet, large sites and close to so many amenities!"

Utilities and hookups: Most cabin accommodations include electricity, but water access varies. According to Nicole C. regarding Indian Valley Campground, "Keep in mind when booking that many of the sites don't have on site water!" Cabin renters should confirm which utilities are included with their reservation.

Local attractions: Cabins provide convenient bases for exploring regional destinations. One Oak Grove Resort visitor writes, "Best part was the 10 min bike ride along Lake Macatawa shoreline to Holland State park where we spent many hours on the beach of Lake Michigan." Proximity to attractions should factor into cabin selection decisions.
