What to do
Lake activities beyond swimming: Ludington State Park offers multiple water-based activities. "You can ride bikes, you can kayak, you can walk some trails, float down a river, or go to Lake Michigan," shares Kelly L. The park includes both river and lake water access points.
Lighthouse hike: Take the trek to Big Sable Lighthouse. "The hike to Big Sable Lighthouse was beautiful as it wound through the woods and out over the dunes," notes one visitor. Pack water and appropriate footwear as the trail crosses sandy terrain.
Dunes exploration: Pines Campground offers direct dune access from certain sites. "We could walk right from our campsite up the sandy hills to see Lake Michigan in the distance," says Star W. The Skyline Trail provides elevated views of Lake Michigan and surrounding dune formations.
What campers like
Multiple lakes access: Whispering Surf Campground sits between two bodies of water. "Whispering Surf has a private beach on Bass Lake--great fishing, sandy bottom, kayak and canoe rentals--plus 2 Lake Michigan beaches within walking distance," according to Brenda S. This dual-water access remains a key attraction.
Amenities for extended stays: Kibby Creek Campground offers comprehensive facilities. "There are rustic tent sites, tent sites with water/electric, water/electric for campers/RVs, and even a few cabins," reports Amanda L. The campground provides "two basketball courts (half courts), a volleyball court, shuffle board, mini golf, a pool, a train ride for kids, a private fishing pond, playgrounds, sand boxes, and various other planned activities."
Winter cabin options: Some cabins remain accessible during colder months. "Winter camped in Pines Mini Cabin. Bunk beds with one a double- sleeps 5 total. Heat, electricity, mini fridge, microwave, table and 4 chairs. Well built and very clean," notes Kathie M. Winter cabin rentals provide access to "awesome trails for hiking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing."
What you should know
Reservation timing: Book early, especially for summer months. "It's a popular and busy campground so plan early and schedule far in advance," advises Sarah K. about Beechwood Campground.
Beach access variations: Some areas have limited or changing beach access. "Due to high waters the past few years there is no beach," explains one camper about a nearby park. Water levels affect beach access across the region.
Limited privacy in some areas: Many cabin sites have minimal separation. "Our site was a patch between a huge RV and a little pop up camper with all the bells and whistles, on a corner near a restroom," shares one visitor. Sites along berms or woods typically offer more seclusion.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Request sites near play areas if traveling with children. "We stayed close to the playscape, which ended up being awesome for our kids," recommends Melissa M. from Cartier Park Campground.
Town access considerations: Some campgrounds provide easier town access for supplies or entertainment. "There is a nice trail walk through a residential area that empties you into downtown Ludington," notes one visitor about Cartier Park.
Family event planning: Check for scheduled activities. "Every we come up to Ludington State Park for our annual camping trip with my parents and Sister. It is a great place to be as a family," shares Geoffrey B. When booking multiple sites, request adjacent locations.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Look for bermed sites for more privacy. "Sites back up to the woods with large berms which is nice especially if you like to jump right in and explore and for privacy," notes one camper at Poncho's Pond RV Park.
Early arrival recommendation: Arrive during daylight hours for easier setup. "The office staff was super helpful pointed out places to hike and things to do for the weekend. Also loved that they gave us a choice of sites and let us drive around the campground (in their golf cart) and pick out the one we wanted," shares Nancy W.
Cable and connectivity: Some parks offer better technical amenities. "All 257 sites are full hook-up (with cable), level, and have paved patios and for a $2 up charge you can get a paved site," according to one RVer. Most cabin areas have limited or no cell service, so plan communications accordingly.
