    Muskegon KOA

    Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

    Newaygo State Park Campground

    Good summer weekend destination

If you have any watercraft, this is a good weekender spot. The hike trails are easily traversed and if you ask the camp ranger at reception, you can also rent single or tandem kayaks for *quite a reasonable price in varying time blocks if you don't have any watercraft of your own - you just tell them what time that you want to start and they will bring the kayak to the boat launch for you, which is great. Trash dumpsters and firewood are available at the campground entrance (if wood for some reason is unavailable, there's a BP gas station nearby that also sells it for $1 cheaper a bundle). The designated swimming area for the site is not the best unless you have small children, but if you like towed tubing, there's plenty of that happening mid-lake, outside of the other pontoons and boats. Also, despite the features listed here, there are no shower facilities available at this site, so bring bath wipes if you want to stay fresh! The water pump was also inoperable during my stay, but came prepared with plenty of bottled water anyway. The campfire pits also do not have grates for grilling/cooking any hot food, but if you have any cast iron cookware, you can get around this by placing your fire pit logs as evenly as possible so you can set your cookware direct on the flame (or just bring a mini grill if you prefer). Also close enough to Grand Haven so you can spend a few hours there as part of a mini get-away and still get to your site within about an hour or so.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Muskegon County Pioneer County Park

    Beautiful and relaxing

This campground is our home away from home in the summer! It is beautiful & very relaxing especially during the weekdays when it's not as full. The bathrooms are clean & the rangers keep up with mowing & other chores to keep the grounds clean. When it gets crowded the wifi doesn't work great & some of the campers are not very respectful; they cut through lots & don't abide by the rules (no pets on beach & no bikes or skateboards on boardwalk). The rangers get after them when they see it. Gets frustrating because it ruins it for others who care about the park. The only other downfall is there isn't much beach because of the high water table. I wish they could dredge & bring in more sand. Otherwise it's our favorite place to be!

    South Channel Campground

    Love it!

Stayed here with our camper over the weekend, we loved it! We stayed on the channel side, and was right next to the pathway to walk to the channel. It’s very well maintained, fire pit rings, bath house, electric hookups, dump station, paved spots. It was close to The beach to Lake Michigan and the beautiful sand dunes right on the beach. We brought our dogs and stayed for two nights, it was a great place to start our camping season.

    Newaygo State Park Campground

    Hamocker's Paradise

This site turned out to be a diamond in the rough. Due to our lack of planning and seeking reservations, Newaygo State Park was one of the few campsites with short notice availability. As we entered we were greeted by spacious plots with enough treeline between them to cover up even the loudest of snorers. We took the next few minutes mapping out our perfect hammock setup. With so many options, we settled on our spots and built up the rest of camp. Nestled in and ready to explore, we walked to the edge of our site to the head of the beach trail to check out what we had gotten ourselves into. Less than a mile hike later and we made it to the 'beach front'. It wasn't much. The shallow buoyed off swim area was sandy, yet immediately upon passing the buoys we were met by very thick seaweed. Nonetheless, the view was breathtaking, there are plenty of lookout points over the lake to spend quiet time posted up in a hammock reading or whatever else you do in a hammock. Nighttime came and we were around the fire. We read that quiet hours start at 10:00 so being conscious of the expectations we kept our conversation at a low level and had light music playing from a phone. Around 11:10 a park ranger stopped by asking us to turn off the music, no big. But it seemed to us that no music after quiet hours should also be a part of the rules. All in all, we had an amazing weekend and we're all looking forward to our next weekend spent here. Thanks, Newaygo State Park!

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

Guide to Byron Center

Byron Center camping options extend beyond traditional tent sites, with yurt camping becoming popular at area parks. Located in Kent County, Michigan, with elevations around 700 feet, the region features rolling hills and wooded terrain. The area's moderate continental climate creates four distinct camping seasons, with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and humidity making spring and fall more comfortable for outdoor activities.

What to do

Water activities: Lake Macatawa Campground offers proximity to both Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa, providing diverse water recreation. "There is a walking path to Lake Michigan. Close to downtown Holland," notes one camper at Lake Macatawa Campground.

Hiking trails: Fort Custer Recreation Area maintains extensive multi-use trails for all skill levels. "Endless hiking trails and two lakes where you can fish, swim, and boat," says a reviewer who visited Fort Custer Recreation Area regularly.

Golfing and camping: Tyler Creek combines camping with golfing for a unique outdoor experience. "It's on a golf course which is something new and exciting! There was a live band there on the Saturday night we were there, they were AMAZING," shares a camper at Tyler Creek.

Paddling opportunities: The Thornapple River provides canoe and kayak options with several access points. "It is along the Thornapple River where it is very popular to canoe, kayak, and tube. It's close enough to a city but not too close," explains a visitor at Indian Valley Campground & Canoe Livery.

What campers like

Kid-friendly amenities: Many campgrounds near Byron Center offer specialized activities for children. "We have two young girls and they had plenty to do all week during our stay. Multiple playgrounds, toddler pool and regular pool, jump pad, and lots of room to run around," notes a family who stayed at Hungry Horse Campground.

Beach access: Grand Haven State Park offers beach camping right on Lake Michigan. "Grand Haven is a tourist destination. Known for its beautiful beaches, great restaurant's, and small town shops. The State Park is not at all roughing it but makes up for that in views of sunset and beach front camp sites," reports a visitor at Grand Haven State Park.

Private camping spots: Some campgrounds offer more secluded options. "We've stayed at both sites listed. 161 you do have neighbors pretty close, but we just stayed at 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!" explains a visitor about Fort Custer Recreation Area.

Yurt camping options: For those interested in yurt camping near Byron Center, Michigan, several area parks now offer this unique accommodation. "This campsite is perfect for children! The workers are the nicest people I have encountered at a campsite," shares a visitor to Michawana Campground, which offers glamping options.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during summer months. "This campground is EXTREMELY hard to get into on the weekends. If you are planning a trip to Grand Haven State Park, be sure to log onto the State Reservation site six months to the date that you want to camp," advises a repeat visitor.

Site differences: Campground sites vary significantly in size, privacy, and amenities. "All sites include a concrete pad, fire ring and full hook-up. 120/150 amp," explains a visitor at Hidden Ridge RV Resort, contrasting with more rustic options elsewhere.

Seasonal considerations: The camping season typically runs April through October. "Season: Apr 1 - Oct 30," notes the information for Hidden Ridge RV Resort, though some facilities are available year-round.

Alcohol policies: Rules vary between campgrounds. "NO alcohol-allowed," is listed for Lake Macatawa Campground, while others permit alcohol consumption.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Many campgrounds offer organized events for children. "They also typically offer planned activities throughout the week such as wagon rides, meet and greets, and ice cream socials," shares a family at Hungry Horse Campground.

Water safety: Lakes and rivers provide recreation but require supervision. "The lake is beautiful with a great walk down the pier to the lighthouse. They have great facilities as well with large individual showers," notes a Grand Haven visitor.

Budget considerations: Some campgrounds charge extra for activities. "While there we over heard them planning a craft event (horse pool noodles) they said they paid $3.00 for all supplies combined and planned on charging each child $4.00!" warns one visitor about costs.

Yurt camping for families: For a different camping experience near Byron Center, Michigan, consider trying a yurt. "This campsite has a lake/beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake. They also have a massive slip 'n slide, zip lining, and a rock climbing wall," reports a visitor at Camp Michawana.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Check specific site amenities before booking. "Sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," warns a camper at Fort Custer Recreation Area.

Site layout: Many RV sites are designed for larger rigs. "All sites are good size sites with a cement pad and very green grass. It is also very well run and maintained," shares an RVer who stayed at Hidden Ridge.

Shade coverage: Consider sun exposure when selecting sites. "One downside to this place is there is not much shade. Most of the bigger trees are around the perimeter so most sites are in the sun all day," advises an RVer about Hidden Ridge.

Distance to amenities: Plan for travel to necessary facilities. "Not really any fast food restaurants either. Obviously not a deal breaker, but just something to be prepared for," notes an RVer about location considerations.
