What to do
Whitewater adventures: 45 minutes west at Zoar Outdoor in Charlemont offers both cabin rentals and outdoor activities. "The campground is connected to an adventure/outing company that provides white water rafting, tubing and other water activities on a nearby river. It's close to where locals jump off outcrops into the lazy river and hang out on the river side," notes Seth K.
Fall foliage viewing: October peak season at Northampton/Springfield KOA provides excellent viewing opportunities. "We went to this campground during fall foliage time. Very peaceful and very great staff. They had hayless rides and fire truck rides. This time they had a haunted house walk through," reports Jason A.
Woodland hiking: Multiple trail access points within Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground connect to regional networks. "Ample hiking to be done in the park and you can access the Mohawk trail right from the campground, the Appalachian trail and Mt Greylock is a short drive away," explains Bill K.
What campers like
Clean, well-maintained facilities: The vacation cabins at Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites receive consistent praise for cleanliness. "Bath house is definitely the cleanest I've ever seen. Looks like it's recently done! Wow!! The cabin I stayed in was awesome...could have stayed for a week and next year I plan to do just that!!" writes Catherine C.
Unique lodging experiences: Train enthusiasts appreciate Chester Railway Station for its novelty accommodations. "It is a really fun place to spend a night, especially for a train enthusiast. The caboose is stationed on a big grassy field, near a real railroad. It sleeps 4 and you can set up tents outside too. You hear the trains running at night. Very clean and comfortable," says Esther L.
Natural water features: Several cabin rental properties offer water access. At Prospect Mountain Campground, "We liked this campground a lot! Lots of trees and shade. Great pool. The sites on the water looked nice- hoping to try for that next time!" reports Stephanie.
What you should know
Limited cell coverage: Communication can be challenging at certain woodland cabin sites. At Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground, "I had a flicking bar of coverage at the high point of the campground on Verizon, but all you MIGHT be able to do is text. Head toward Florida, MA on Rt 2 and at the height of land(shortly before you reach the Elk monument), you'll have good coverage."
Cabin amenities vary significantly: Some basic cabins lack standard features. At Country Aire Campgrounds, guests receive "warm clean bathrooms" and can purchase "warm cinnamon buns in the am," while cabins at other locations may have fewer comforts.
Reservation timing matters: Peak seasons fill quickly, especially holiday weekends. At Prospect Mountain Campground, seasonal sites are in high demand with "waiting list is quit long!" according to Dawn E.
Tips for camping with families
Children's activities: Schedule around weekend events when staying at cabin rentals. "Prospects mountain is a great campground for families with younger kids. They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides. They also have a great pool, playground and pond for fishing. They also have a nice little store and snack bar," recommends Sandra S.
Pool access: Morning swimming recommended during summer heat. October Mountain State Forest Campground offers alternatives with "a small pond with swimming beach and a couple was just pulling their kayak out when I arrived."
Cabin spacing considerations: Sites vary in privacy levels. At Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground, "We stayed in site 1, and we could barely see our neighbor's fire at night, because there were so many trees between us. It was great," reports Kris M.
Tips from RVers
Terrain challenges: Bring leveling blocks when booking cabin or RV sites. At Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites, one camper noted: "I could have used leveling blocks because it was hard to find a great spot that was level side to side. Sites 27 & 29 each seemed a little more level and 29 was larger."
Navigation concerns: Follow official directions rather than GPS when approaching cabin rental areas. For Savoy Mountain, "don't rely on GPS to get you there it will put you on the wrong end of the park in the middle of a rural neighborhood. The park is so hard to find that not even a cell signal can get there, if your looking to unplug this is a great spot!"
Site selection strategy: Choose location based on proximity to amenities. At Country Aire Campgrounds, "We only live about 20 minutes away from this campground, we had a nice shady spot. The owners of this campground very friendly courteous and Knowledgeable of the local area. This place is quite quiet has a pool and other family activities."
