    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

October Mountain State Forest Campground accommodates pets throughout its campground sections, with designated pet-friendly sites in both the RV area near the entrance and wooded tent sites in the upper area. The facilities maintain clean bathrooms and showers where campers and their dogs can stay comfortably from mid-May to mid-October. Multiple reviews confirm the campground's cleanliness and trail accessibility for dog walking. Spacious Skies Woodland Hills in nearby Austerlitz, NY also welcomes pets with amenities including a dog park where dogs can exercise off-leash. Both campgrounds maintain standard leash policies in common areas, requiring dogs to be supervised at all times. Most sites at October Mountain are close together, providing limited privacy, while Beartown State Forest Campground offers a quieter setting with only 12 total sites.

Hiking trails accessible directly from October Mountain State Forest Campground provide excellent options for dog owners, including connections to the Appalachian Trail. The marsh trail is particularly stunning for walks with pets, featuring boardwalks over muddy areas. Sites 39-40 at October Mountain offer more seclusion for campers with dogs who prefer privacy, though the constant hum from the nearby power station may disturb sensitive pets. Spacious Skies Woodland Hills features a pond where dogs can cool off after hiking, though swimming is restricted to designated areas. Both campgrounds require up-to-date vaccinations for all pets, and campers should bring waste bags as dedicated pet waste stations are limited. Beartown State Forest provides a more secluded camping experience with pond access at four of its sites, making it ideal for dogs that enjoy water.

      Cozy Hills Campground

      Very nice campground however…

We have enjoyed our stay. Nice campground with lots of activities and things to do. However, we picked this place because it has an enclosed dog park. It does have an enclosed dog park but the fence is only 3 feet high. While this might be fine for some dogs, I have 2 young border collies that will jump that fence like it is not even there.

      Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

      Lots of fun

The campsite was great. Big and going after Labor Day means there was tons of space. Well priced. We did have neighbors that had a trailer and used their generator early in the morning and late at night. Beside that it was fantastic. We had planned on driving to hiking but there was so much to do around the camp site we just walked around and did the hiking near by. The dog park is wonderful. Our dog loved it.

      Big Widely Spaced Sites

Lots of room in many sites for my 24 ft RV and 30 ft trailer. Big meadow in middle with new full playground set.

Dry camping but water available and a sewer dump. Gotta haul your own trash.

Two ponds to play in and a fenced dog park.

Some nice hiking in the park.

      Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

Nice stay and very friendly staff

Such a clean and well maintained campground. Staff were so nice and friendly. Only one shower area that was a bit of a trek from our site, a bike would have been nice to get around. We had to move our tent as we had set it back too far and was not on the site pad and park ranger Brian who was very lovely came and asked us to move it and we had a nice chat. Lovely big dog park. There are some nice little walks and small hikes on the ground with a lake that you can rent kayaks or canoes. Close to Woodstock which is a cute town. Our site was a little exposed but the sites either side of us were closed for restoration thankfully. There are some more secluded and set back sites too though.

      Spacious Skies Woodland Hills

      A peaceful place with character.

My first visit to New York state was amazing, largely in part due to my campsite at the Woodland Hills campground. I had a back in site and was having problems with my camper, and they were able to change to a pull through at time of check in. However, it was in early May and before the summer crowds. The pond has a fountain which sounds like a small waterfall at night, and wildflowers were in bloom. Very nice bathrooms and showers, and my dog loved the dog park.

Adventure Bound Camping Resort at Deer Run

Easy and well taken care of

This was my very first trip in an rv so I was a little nervous but overall everything went very smoothly. All of the sites are pull through so no worries about backing in. They are pretty close together but we went so early in the season we didn’t have anyone on either side of us - in fact I think we were the only people there that weren’t seasonal. We didn’t have a ton of interactions with the other campers beyond a smile and nod but no one was outright unfriendly. At the office/store the employees were very nice and helpful. The public bathrooms were very clean but the toilets didn’t flush very well in the 2 different bathrooms we went to. The pools looked nice but they weren’t open yet because it was still cold. There was a nice little dog park fenced in area for my dog to run around in. The kids/teens were typical kids/teens and did get a little rowdy/noisy but it wasn’t anything excessive and quiet hours seemed to be well respected. Overall I’d stay again.

      Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

      Camp cozy!

Can a campground be cozy? I think this place is.

It's not too big, and it's not too small, it's just right.

Bring decent tent pegs because you will probably hit a stone or two.

They sell huge bags of firewood for 8 or 9 dollars and it's much better than the plastic wrapped stuff you get at convenience stores.

Last time we went they were sold out and we had to buy (damp) wood elsewhere.

Each loop has a bathroom. They are clean and well-lit.

They have a single building for trash/recycle/reuse and for washing dishes. They also have a playground and a dog park.

The campsites are nice and shaded.

Each site has a picnic table and grill. The picnic tables can be moved around.

No Wi-Fi. Haven't tried to make a call so I'm not sure about that.

I'd feel safe here if I camped alone. Staff are friendly and helpful.

    Guide to West Stockbridge

October Mountain State Forest is situated in the western Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, with elevations ranging from 1,400 to 2,200 feet. The 16,500-acre forest contains the largest state forest in Massachusetts and features a mix of hardwood forest and marshy lowlands. Weather conditions vary significantly between seasons, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 55°F to 80°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms in July and August.

    What to do

Hiking to waterfalls: Visit Taconic State Park to access Bash Bish Falls, the highest single-drop waterfall in Massachusetts. "Close to great hiking. The swimming there felt really clean and I loved the dock," reports Emily F. from Taconic State Park, who also mentioned the falls were a highlight of her trip.

Trail exploration: Explore the extensive trail network at Pittsfield State Forest. "Beautiful sunsets up at Pond, you can get primitive campsites there. Great hiking in forest, saw a few mt. bikers. Quick drive to mt.greylock," notes Danielle H., who visited in July 2020.

Fishing opportunities: Try fishing at Pontoosuc Lake near Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites. "Pontoosuc Lake is a short walk away; there are boat rentals available and I saw a number of people fishing from Pontoosuc Park just above the dam," reports Jean C., who stayed with a teardrop camper.

Bird watching: Spend time at Schodack Island State Park observing wildlife. "Best part was hiking out to a couple of different blinds to look for birds. Did see a juv eagle," shares Patsy E., who appreciated the campground's birding opportunities even during a short stay.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Fernwood Forest Campground receives consistently high marks for cleanliness. "This has to be the cleanest campground I've ever visited!" states Tyler H., who was particularly impressed with the maintenance standards throughout the property.

Quiet camping environment: Beartown State Forest offers peaceful camping with minimal crowds. "Many visits here to my 'happy place.' With only 12 sites, 4 of which have Benedict Pond access, it's a quiet, lovely site," writes Patricia E., highlighting the secluded nature of this smaller campground.

Accessibility to water: Several campgrounds provide direct water access. "We had a back in site and was having problems with my camper, and they were able to change to a pull through at time of check in... The pond has a fountain which sounds like a small waterfall at night," explains Ann B. about her stay at Spacious Skies Woodland Hills.

Diverse camping options: Campgrounds near West Stockbridge offer various accommodation types. "The campground has 3 sections, located on different tiers of a hill. The lower level has RV sites, middle has tent sites, and upper has a few yurts," explains Trip Over Life about October Mountain State Forest.

    What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds in the area operate from mid-May to mid-October. "We camped during the summer of 2020 and due to covid they were only at partial capacity. This was great for us because we had a lot more privacy than we otherwise would," notes Drew Q. about Pittsfield State Forest Campground.

Site selection matters: Choose your site carefully for the best experience. "What site you get makes all the difference. There are Many, I would say most, Sites that you feel very exposed... Just plopped next to someone on the grass," advises Desiree M. about October Mountain.

Reservation requirements: Some campgrounds don't allow same-day bookings. "First off no same day reservations or walk ups allowed," warns SomadNomad M. about October Mountain State Forest, suggesting planning ahead is essential.

Weather preparedness: The Berkshires experience significant weather variations. "This place, overall, is a good time if it's not below 60 and wet," advises Kiye A., noting that early and late season camping can bring challenging conditions.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Mount Greylock State Reservation offers family-friendly amenities. "The rangers deliver wood to your site... The composting toilets were so spacious and clean... Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table," shares Heidi R., who enjoyed camping with friends.

Swimming options: Look for campgrounds with dedicated swimming areas. "They have a pond for swimming and softball field. They allow late check ins!" mentions Jennie about Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, highlighting activities that children particularly enjoy.

Educational opportunities: Utilize ranger programs when available. "This park had a nice pool and used to be a KOA now it is privately owned but I believe it is still just as nice. They have live music and it's gated so only campers and visitors can get into the gates which is nice security wise," explains Amanda S. about her experience at Taconic State Park.

Pet-friendly considerations: Many local campgrounds welcome dogs with specific guidelines. "If you are traveling with a dog, be sure to bring proof of rabies— they ask," advises Erin B. about Taconic State Park, an important reminder for those searching for dog friendly campgrounds near West Stockbridge.

    Tips from RVers

Site size and access: Taconic Copake Falls provides adequate room for various RV sizes. "No electric hookups, but plenty of water and tent sites are available with very large platforms. Bathroom facilities are adequate. There are 2 dog friendly loops at the back," explains Erin B., noting the layout works well for different camping styles.

Hookup availability: Verify what utilities are available at your preferred site. "We rented a rustic campsite for a long weekend and it was way better than expected... There are only two showers in each gendered bathroom, but there are so many RVs here it never was an issue," shares Amy G. about her experience at Spacious Skies Woodland Hills.

Leveling considerations: Be prepared for uneven terrain. "Terrain is uneven. Hit and miss on how flat or leave sights are," cautions Ray P. about Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, suggesting bringing leveling blocks.

Winter closure: Most RV sites in the region close during winter months. "Stayed 2x last year Dan was a Great host," mentions Benjamin R. about Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites, which operates from May 1 to October 15.
