Cabin camping options near Florence, Massachusetts center around several state forests and private campgrounds within the Berkshire foothills. The area sits at elevations ranging from 400 to 1,200 feet with typical summer temperatures between 60-85°F and colder winters with substantial snowfall. Most cabin sites close by mid-October, with a limited number offering year-round accommodations depending on weather conditions.
What to do
Hiking trails access: At Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground, cabins provide proximity to multiple hiking paths. "The sites were a little close and not very private, but if you go during the weekdays, as we did, this won't be an issue. The lower sites near the river are good sized and the river ambiance is nice," notes a camper who appreciated the serene setting.
White water experiences: Cabin guests at Zoar Outdoor can participate in organized river activities. "The campground is connected to an adventure/outing company that provides white water rafting, tubing and other water activities on a nearby river. It's close to where locals jump off outcrops into the lazy river and hang out on the river side," explains one visitor.
Seasonal activities: Fall foliage viewing becomes the main attraction from late September through October. "We went to this campground during fall foliage time. Very peaceful and very great staff. They had hayless rides and fire truck rides. This time they had a haunted house walk through," reports a visitor who stayed at Northampton/Springfield KOA.
What campers like
Wildlife observations: Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground cabins include bear boxes for food storage. "Bear boxes are provided at each site as this is black Bear country. Ample hiking to be done in the park and you can access the Mohawk trail right from the campground, the Appalachian trail and Mt Greylock is a short drive away," notes a recent visitor.
Water recreation: Many cabin visitors appreciate waterfront options. "We stayed in the cabins and they were clean, and we liked our proximity to the pool," shares a camper who stayed at Northampton/Springfield KOA. Another adds, "The campground has a nice loop for the kids to bike. North Pond has a small beach for swimming."
Unique lodging experiences: The train caboose accommodation at Chester Railway Station provides a distinctive option. "It is a really fun place to spend a night, especially for a train enthusiast. The caboose is stationed on a big grassy field, near a real railroad. Very clean and comfortable," according to a recent visitor.
What you should know
Limited connectivity: Cell service varies widely across cabin sites. "The campground is so hard to find that not even a cell signal can get there, if you're looking to unplug this is a great spot," reports a visitor at October Mountain State Forest Campground.
Seasonal limitations: Most cabin rentals close after mid-October. "We only live about 20 minutes away from this campground, we had a nice shady spot. The owners of this campground are very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable of the local area," explains a visitor at Country Aire Campgrounds.
Reservation requirements: Advance booking is essential, especially for weekend stays. "We stayed here for one night en route to Cape Cod. Although we had requested a specific site on the KOA website, the gentleman in the front office had arranged for us to park in an easily accessible pull-through site, right at the entrance," notes one Northampton/Springfield KOA visitor.
