Wolf Den Campground — Mashamoquet Brook State Park

    Great place to camp

Son and I stayed from Friday to Sunday. Easy to find the camp and the plot, well marked. Very nice sized lots. Large open areas for kids and adults to play during day and star gaze at night. Close to a small walking path and a larger intermediate hiking trail. Bathrooms were clean and staff were friendly. Would definitely stay again.

Wolf Den Campground — Mashamoquet Brook State Park

    Nice overnight spot

Stayed here on a Tuesday night right after hurricane Henri. The park was completely cleaned up from any damage or debris, all in great shape. No other campers here when we arrived, so totally silent. No road noise. Most sites are relatively short level pads, with little or no shade, but very pleasant. We picked site 33 for the best shade and longer pad. Wished we had time to check out the hiking trails accessible from the campground.

Wolf Den Campground — Mashamoquet Brook State Park

Basic campground with hiking trails in the area.

This small state park campground offers basic campsites with running water and showers, open Memorial Day to Columbus Day.  This is NOT Wolf's Den Family Campground in E. Haddam, CT. Also, be aware there are 2 campgrounds at this State Park; the other one, Mashamoquet Brook, does not offer running water/showers, so if you want these amenities, be sure to select a campsite 1-35.

There's a small playground in the middle of the loop, a number of hiking trails throughout the park along with a few geocaches (download details for offline use a phone connection is spotty), a swimming pond, and a small brook with an old mill and blacksmith shop that is sometimes open on weekends for tours. It's a nice place to explore and have a picnic. In 2020 with Covid, there were restrictions on visitors to the campground, reservations required, and swimming was not allowed.

The parking pads are paved and a few have overhanging branches, but the trees provide  separation and some shade on largely open sites that tend to open up toward the back with open areas for pitching tents. Sites have fire rings with grills and picnic tables. Site 20 is the only one with electric. The ones toward the back of the loop back up toward the woods and give you some more privacy.

They don't allow hammocks in the trees or pets. For some reason, silly string also makes the list of prohibitions.

Guide to Florence

Wolf Den Campground at Mashamoquet Brook State Park encompasses 17 acres within the larger 1,928-acre state park located in northeastern Connecticut. The campground sits at approximately 400 feet elevation and experiences typical New England seasonal weather patterns with warm summers and cold winters. Sites are arranged in a single loop configuration with centralized facilities and direct access to the park's trail system.

What to do

Hiking nearby trails: Wolf Den Campground provides direct access to multiple trail systems. "One of my all time favorite hikes," notes Mike C. about the Mashamoquet Brook State Park trail system. Trails range from easy walking paths to intermediate difficulty routes.

Stargazing opportunities: The campground's location away from major light pollution creates excellent night sky viewing conditions. As one visitor notes, "Large open areas for kids and adults to play during day and star gaze at night," according to 175 P., who stayed at the park for a weekend trip.

Historical exploration: Visit the historic structures within the park including the old mill and blacksmith shop. The shop occasionally opens for guided tours on weekends during peak season, allowing visitors to learn about traditional blacksmithing techniques and local history.

What campers like

Privacy at select sites: Sites positioned toward the rear of the camping loop offer more seclusion. "The ones toward the back of the loop back up toward the woods and give you some more privacy," explains Jean C. in her review of Wolf Den Campground. These wooded-adjacent sites provide natural screening from neighboring campers.

Well-maintained facilities: The campground keeps its amenities in good condition year-round. "The park was completely cleaned up from any damage or debris, all in great shape," reports Gary G., who visited immediately after Hurricane Henri in 2021. He found the campground "totally silent" with "no road noise" during his midweek stay.

Spacious campsites: The sites offer ample room for equipment and activities. "Very nice sized lots," mentions 175 P., whose father-son camping trip benefited from the well-marked and generously proportioned sites that accommodate various tent configurations.

What you should know

Seasonal operation only: Wolf Den Campground operates from late May through early September, with specific annual dates varying slightly. This limited season coincides with peak New England outdoor recreation weather.

Limited hookup options: Only one campsite (site 20) offers electrical connections. Water hookups are available, but most sites are designed for tent camping or self-contained RVs. The paved parking pads vary in length, with site 33 noted for having "the best shade and longer pad" according to Gary G.

Prohibition list: The campground enforces several specific rules that campers should note. "They don't allow hammocks in the trees or pets. For some reason, silly string also makes the list of prohibitions," Jean C. explains about NV Farms Outfitters and Cabins, contrasting with Wolf Den's policies.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Families with children benefit from the small playground located in the center of the camping loop. This central location allows parents to monitor children while maintaining proximity to their campsites.

Activity planning: The park offers multiple recreational options for families. "Close to a small walking path and a larger intermediate hiking trail. Bathrooms were clean and staff were friendly," notes 175 P., whose father-son weekend trip included both hiking activities and campsite relaxation.

Swimming options: A swimming pond within the park provides water recreation during summer months. However, availability may vary by season and park policies. During 2020, swimming was temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger vehicles: While not specifically designed for big rigs, some sites accommodate moderate-sized RVs. "We picked site 33 for the best shade and longer pad," recommends Gary G., noting that "most sites are relatively short level pads, with little or no shade."

Utility connections: RVers requiring hookups should specifically request site 20, the only site with electrical service. Water and sanitary dump facilities are available, but sewer hookups at individual sites are not provided.

Equestrian camping near Florence, Massachusetts: For those seeking horse-friendly camping options in the region, specialized equestrian camping facilities are limited. The available data does not indicate that Wolf Den Campground offers horse corrals or dedicated equestrian camping accommodations, though some campgrounds within day-trip distance of Florence may permit horseback riding on designated trails.
