What to do
Farm experiences: Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Campground provides direct access to a working organic farm. "One of our families favorite camping spots. We prefer sites near playground that overlook Vasco bay. Bathrooms are very clean and kids really enjoy running in field and that there is a working farm within the camp ground," explains a visitor to Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Campground.
Ocean exploration: At low tide, Sagadahoc Bay Campground offers unique tidal flat exploration. "When the tide goes out you have the entire inlet to walk around in and explore. At night the stars were absolutely amazing!" notes a camper at Sagadahoc Bay Campground.
Swimming options: Hermit Island has multiple beaches reserved exclusively for campers. "Hermit is dotted with fabulous beaches, open only to campers on the island. If you love wildlife, bird watching is great here, as well as crab and hermit crab catching," shares a visitor at Hermit Island Campground.
What campers like
Fresh seafood delivery: Meadowbrook Camping provides lobster cooked and delivered directly to your site. "Lobsters for sale straight out of the tank cooked and delivered to your site every day. Don't forget to add corn and potatoes. Fire pits are stone and awesome," reports a visitor at Meadowbrook Camping.
Proximity to beaches: Several campgrounds offer easy beach access. "Small beautiful campground right on the water. Away from the busy stuff but close enough to visit it if you want," notes a camper about Sagadahoc Bay Campground.
Seasonal activities: Many campgrounds organize special events throughout the season. "We spent the night in one of the Oceanfront RV spots. The RV spots are in a very open field, but they are directly on the water. When the tide goes out you have the entire inlet to walk around in and explore," shares another visitor about Sagadahoc Bay.
What you should know
Reservation systems vary: Some campgrounds use traditional booking methods. "This campground does not have an online reservation system. You have to mail in your request or call. When calling during the 'winter' months (anytime from September through Mid-June), staff can only be reached from 9:00-2:00," explains a Hermit Island visitor.
Insect preparation: Coastal Maine has significant mosquito populations. "Be prepared to deal with mosquitos! Many people use screen tents. We've always had good results using thermacell units," advises another Hermit Island camper.
Variable site privacy: Site layouts differ significantly between campgrounds. "The sites were fairly close to each other but we had a site at the end that had wonderful views of the river and we could angle our camper so we had privacy," notes a visitor at Shore Hills Campground & RV Park.
Tips for camping with families
Farm activities for kids: Working farms provide educational experiences. "This campground was really beautiful. Sites were not very private, but the views and scenery are spectacular. My kids enjoyed visiting with the farm animals and walking along the rocky shore each day," shares a Wolfe's Neck visitor.
Beach options: Look for campgrounds with swimming areas. "We were a group of friends, drinking a few beers and having a few laughs around a campfire. The grounds are beautiful, the sites are well spaced and not cramped," notes a visitor to Winslow Park And Campground.
Cabin choices for families: Some cabins offer multi-bed setups. "The sites are large. The people are nice. It is the only place we have stayed at more than once," explains a Shore Hills camper.
Tips from RVers
Unlevel sites: Be prepared for leveling challenges. "Our site was unlevel and we were always on a bit of an incline. Our coach is pretty sensitive when it comes to leveling so this may not be a problem with other units or towables," advises an RV camper at Meadowbrook.
Site selection: Oceanfront sites often lack shade. "The water views are great from the Oceanside sites. There is plenty of things to do in the area. July is VERY buggy! The staff are very friendly and accommodating," explains a visitor at Sagadahoc Bay.
Electric options: Power setups vary between campgrounds. "We were given the wrong site. We were setting up and realizing it was a 20 amp site and we had booked a 30 amp site. The site was also a bit tight, so we decided to check in with the office," notes a camper at Meadowbrook.
