Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground sits at the edge of the Atchafalaya Basin, approximately 10 miles from New Iberia's downtown area. The park spans over 6,000 acres of wetlands with water levels that fluctuate seasonally. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while winters remain mild with occasional frost between December and February.
What to do
Paddle the waterways: Canoe and kayak opportunities abound at Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground, where guests can explore the extensive bayou system. "Kayaked the loop, it has been very rainy, trying to find a middle ground between dry firewood/ground and not being eaten alive by mosquitoes seems tough, but an overall great place to spend a day!" notes Van N.
Fishing excursions: Catfish Heaven Aqua Farm & RV Park offers stocked fishing ponds for campers seeking an easy catch. "Done a lot of fishing out here since I was a child- great place to take kids, lots of fun!" writes Lauren G. The ponds are regularly stocked, though catch-and-release is not permitted.
Hiking trails: Access the nature trails at Palmetto Island State Park Campground for wildlife viewing opportunities. "We stayed here this last weekend for the first time and really enjoyed it! There are a couple of kayak/canoe trails that were great! The hiking trails are also great and well maintained," shares Tara L.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Many campsites at Palmetto Island State Park Campground offer privacy between neighbors. "The campground is heavily wooded and the campsites are well spaced. We stayed only night but would definitely consider staying here again," notes Seth P.
Clean facilities: Maxie's Campground maintains well-kept restrooms and shower facilities despite its roadside location. "Mr. Jason is incredibly communicative and helpful. There are plenty of shaded spots and windbreaks from all directions. The bathrooms are clean and the showers are hot," reports Christopher S.
Local culture access: Campers appreciate the proximity to authentic Cajun experiences. "Heart of Cajun country - about 10 miles from my bayou camp I love to go hike and just hang out every time u come you will see something new it's just amazing," shares Melissa K. about Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground.
What you should know
Seasonal bug issues: Mosquitoes can be overwhelming, particularly in warmer months. "Went to go to one of the paddle in sites or backpack sites however was warned the mosquitoes were horrible. Decided to get a day pass and rent a canoe and then hike the trails. Canoe trip was nice, however was unable to go far on walk due to the thick blanket of mosquitoes," warns Tyler H.
Highway noise: Some campgrounds experience traffic noise that may disturb light sleepers. "Sites are all back in, and on the freeway, so it's very loud," notes Laura M. about Maxie's Campground.
Service limitations: Cell coverage varies significantly between campgrounds in the area. "No cell service anywhere in the park. Supposedly there is wi-fi in some areas but they couldn't tell me where that was and I never found it," reports Tom C. about Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Water recreation options: Camp Margaritaville RV Resort Breaux Bridge offers multiple swimming pools that appeal to families with children. "This is one of the nicer ones. We have been 3 summers and have always enjoyed it. Movie theater, small game room, tiki bar, lots of activities and play areas for the kids, and the pools are nice," recommends Jessica B.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Guided nature walks can help children spot local wildlife safely. "Good for a day or weekend trip with kids. We enjoy going for picnics. Fun trails to walk, you'll spot alligators and other critters," mentions Lindsey F.
Safety considerations: Some campgrounds enforce strict rules for children's safety. "We didn't realize a section of the pool was 21 and over and an armed security guard shined his flashlight in my eyes to get my attention, to tell my son to move 2 feet on the other side of the rope," cautions Jackie H. about Camp Margaritaville's policies.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Parkside RV Park offers level, paved sites that require minimal setup time. "The spaces are all level, paved, and long and wide enough to fit your RV and two vehicles. The water, sewer and electrical are all new and work!" reports Erika P.
Hookup locations: Be prepared for variations in utility placement. "You'll need a long sewer hose; the sewer hook ups are at the very back of the site," advises Erika P. about Parkside RV Park.
Park access: Check road conditions before arrival, especially after heavy rains. "I guess the only negative thing I can say which really isn't the park's fault is the road getting into the park is in pretty poor shape for the last 3-4 miles," mentions Lisa M. about accessing Palmetto Island State Park Campground.
