Shale Bluff Campground — Hardy Lake State Recreation Area

Just a really nice place to camp and enjoy the lake.

This is a great State Park offering hiking, swimming, boating, skiing, camping, interpretive naturalist program and the only DNR property in the state of Indiana with a raptor rehabilitation program. The reservoir is 741 acres with boating and fishing plus a huge beach area that is open for swimming. There are four boat launches, fishing piers, fish cleaning stations, archery range, basketball courts, shelter houses, playgrounds, raptor display and more. Hiking trails consist of 5 moderate to easy walks all under 2 miles through Indiana hardwoods, lake shoreline and even a 1700’s cemetery. Camping is in one of two areas; Wooster primitive that has a dozen sites close to the lake and Shale electric consisting of 142 gravel pad sites with 30 amp and 8 premium paved 50 amp sites. Sites are a mix of tree covered and open with most be relatively level providing a picnic table and fire pit. Potable water spigots dispersed throughout the campground and several bathhouse facilities and dump station for your convenience. The campground also has an amphitheater overlooking the lake that offers entertainment and naturalist programs. Convenient location just 15 minutes from the I-65 corridor 38.7766° N, 85.7056° W

    Still Waters Campground

    Wonderfully beautiful, peaceful, and friendly

This campground is located at the mouth of the Elkhorn Creek and Kentucky River. It is extremely popular among locals who want to sit in an tube float and float down the creek to the Kentucky River, a trip that takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Note you have to bring your own tube. Nearly all of the campsites are spacious and have grass. You can park next to your campsite. The campground is very clean, full of trees and shade, and the lawn is well manicured. On weekends you can find campers playing corn hole and karaoke. Food trucks occasionally set up on weekends. Due to the location, only Verizon and Visible cell phone users have service. There is no local Internet. There are two dump stations for RVs. There is also a hiking trail to the top of a nearby mountain. The view of the Kentucky river is magical. The office is open Wednesday thru Sunday. Use of ground mats are frowned upon as they kill the grass at the campsite but are tolerated for long term campers. They have assorted types of camping sites, including: primitive, water and electric, and full hookup. They also offer daily, weekly, weekend, seasonal, and monthly rates. The public restrooms have no heat and are closed when the weather gets cold.

Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

Great park next to the river

This is a small well maintained campground right on the Kentucky river. It is down in a hollow which makes it secluded and quiet. There is a dock and a boat ramp. The customer service is exceptional. Under new management since November, they are making some very nice upgrades. 30/50 amp full hook ups with a number of pull throughs. The sites next to the river are level and easy to back into. There is a pavilion and a pool. It is about 30 minutes from Lexington and about 8 miles to the closest town. The one lane road coming in might give you the willies but it is worth it. They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had. This is a lovely spot with nice amenities.

    Louisville South KOA

Close to Louisville and Bourbon Tours

The Louisville South KOA is approximately 25 miles south of downtown Louisville in Shepardsville, KY. The location is easy to find off the exit of 65(which also has a Walmart and other stores nearby to resupply).

The campground has both pull through gravel sites, back-in, and tent sites. The sites were close to each other but provided plenty of space for the average sized rig. Many were longer than other KOAs, which enabled the tow vehicle and TT to be parked. Full hook-ups and 30/50 amp services at the sites, some leveling required. The campground store is well stocked and the employees are very friendly.

There is a pool(no hot tub-filled in with stones), play/game area, bounce pillow, and 2 miles of hiking trails around the campground. While the campground was nice, there is a lot of“stuff”(old broken trailers, mowers, etc) laying around the edges and in need of mowing between the sites. These items tend to take away from the overall welcoming feeling of the campground.

This being said, the wifi was strong and it is very convenient to sightseeing around Nashville, especially for the price of$54 per night.

    Buffalo Trace Park

Beautiful lake and well maintained park.

We stayed a few nights at this campground in October.  The campground is made for smaller sizes but we were able to negotiate the main ring road with our 37' travel trailer.  The spot that we had reserved was in an area were we could not get into but we went to the gatehouse and they gave us another spot that was on the main ring road that we were able to park in with no issues.  Cell service was great with Verizon and AT&T service.  The lake was beautiful and the park was well maintained.  Wished the beach, paddle boats, and petting zoo was open...  Still had a great time.  We will surely come back next year when everything is open!!  Had 30 and 50 amp service with water hookups and a dump station at the exit.  Make sure you have plenty of leveling blocks.  We used all of ours and was not level.

    Two Rivers Campground

    Very Nice!

Two Rivers is a fairly new, city run campground close to I-71 and adjacent to the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers. All sites are FHU, about half of them are pull-through and all are on level pads for the rig with adjoining concrete pads with picnic tables. There is a playground for kids, a very nice bathhouse and free WiFi. We’ve stayed here on our way to and from Nashville and are doing so again this year. Can’t recommend enough!

    Still Waters Campground

Great for long term or seasonal

Lots of run down RV’s and shanty town in the back of the park. More long term renters than weekend warriors. One dump station, no sewage on the sites. One bathroom, for the whole Park. lots of tents sites (that were busy) makes for poor bathrooms. Not to mention its outhouse style with no climate control. 1/3 men’s bathrooms were out of order and 1/3 urinals were too. 2/3 showers where out of order and the two useable toilets, the door locks were broken. No wifi. Fires are allowed. Fire pits are run down so be mindful. 2/5 bars for ATT services. Sites aren’t labeled or labeled extremely bad. Electrical seems very out dated. Make sure you have protection. Over priced at $60 + tax for the night. Scattered shade. Pull through sites mainly. Picnic tables have seen better days (years more like it). Good space between sites and access to the river for water sports. Little lake for fishing. No pet area and strict leash laws. I wanna give this a 2/5 because they were pleasant. They encouraged me to review on multiple sites but I think that would be bad for them so I’ll stick to my main review site. 1/5, if the price was better like 30-40/night maybe 2/5 but for the price of a motel 6 and only electrical and that is sketchy. Save your money book elsewhere or avoid.

    Camp Carlson Army RV Park

    Small quiet dispersed

Very quiet. Two fenced dog runs that were slightly overgrown when we first arrived but were cut when the rain allowed. Paved roads throughout but very few paved sights. WIFI and cell service very limited would advise a antenna for long term. Office personnel were extremely helpful and understanding. I had truck problems and it extended our stay so I just had to move trailer to different site. Ft Knox is just a few miles away.

Overall this is a great FamCamp. Will definitely stay again.

Guide to Pewee Valley

Camping options near Pewee Valley, Kentucky range from riverfront sites to family-oriented RV parks within a 30-mile radius. Summer temperatures typically range from 85-95°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions for outdoor activities.

What to do

Fishing along Kentucky River: At Cummins Ferry RV Park, campers access prime fishing spots on the Kentucky River. "The river and waterfall makes it feel like a tranquil place. The walking trail by the river is nice, we walked it almost every day," notes one visitor who appreciated the natural setting despite needing extra leveling equipment.

Kayaking opportunities: Several campgrounds provide water access for paddling. "Within an hour of buying my 1966 Airstream I chose this beautiful campground because of the people! Next time I'll explore the trails and enjoy the water," shares a new RVer at Cummins Ferry who appreciated the helpful staff during their first camping trip.

Weekend entertainment: Many rv campgrounds near Pewee Valley feature regular events. "Live music and food trucks every Saturday are a nice touch!" mentions a Cummins Ferry camper, highlighting the social atmosphere that complements outdoor recreation options without requiring visitors to leave the grounds.

What campers like

Riverside campsites: Waterfront locations rank highly among camper preferences. At Swiss Haven RV Resort, campers enjoy Ohio River views. One visitor called it "a great little find right on the banks of the Ohio River" with some prime waterfront sites available for nightly travelers despite having many seasonal tenants.

Family-friendly amenities: Follow The River RV Resort receives praise for its family accommodations. "The campground is easy to access and super well taken care of! There is pool access, a tree for shade at every lot, a picnic table at every lot and water access as well," reports one camper who appreciated the thoughtful layout.

Quiet country settings: Several campgrounds within driving distance of Pewee Valley provide peaceful environments. "This is a hard to find gem in Louisville, KY! Nice sized sites, reasonably priced compared to the KOA, all good full hookups, nicely kept, and most importantly it is in a safe country setting surrounded by large trees and on a dead end road," writes a satisfied visitor at Brooks RV Park.

What you should know

Leveling challenges: Terrain varies significantly across the region. At Elkhorn Creek RV Park, visitors should prepare for potential site variations. A recent camper advises, "I had a long, gravel pull thru site. Barely any room on the camp side but both ends were roomy," indicating the importance of checking site dimensions when booking.

Staff availability: Office hours can be limited at some facilities. Taylorsville Lake State Park campers report challenges with timing: "The guard house is only manned for a short period of time. We wanted to get ice and wood when we arrived, but it was closed."

Navigation challenges: GPS directions may not provide optimal routes to some campgrounds. An Elkhorn Creek visitor cautions, "Make sure you take the exit they tell you & do NOT follow gps or you'll go down a long country road," highlighting the importance of following campground-provided directions.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground offers multiple play areas. "We camped there in July for my son's birthday party. We were near the restroom facilities which were very clean. Playground was close and perfect for everyone to go run and play," shares a parent who found the layout convenient for gathering.

Kid-friendly activities: Look for campgrounds with designated recreation areas. "We absolutely love this campground, very friendly staff and well kept and clean!! They are pet friendly and allow portable fences," notes a Follow The River visitor, indicating the flexibility important to families traveling with children and pets.

Swimming options: Some rv campgrounds around Pewee Valley feature pools for summer cooling. "There is a pool, volleyball courts and a dog park. It is hot in June, so bring a canopy if your RV doesn't have one," advises a Follow The River camper, emphasizing the importance of shade during Kentucky's hot summer months.

Tips from RVers

Site selection guidance: At Camp on the Kentucky, experienced RVers recommend checking site specifications carefully. "This site is really nice, with level sites for RVs or tents, padded grass which is well maintained, nice gravel roads around camp and a river frontage with views," explains a visitor who appreciated the well-maintained grounds.

Electricity considerations: Multiple campgrounds offer varied electrical options. "Every site has a picnic table and a fire pit. There are nearly 80 super nice RV sites and only 4 mobiles. It is a safest RV Park in the Louisville, KY area, right off I-65 in the Greater Louisville area," reports a Brooks RV Park visitor highlighting the full-hookup amenities.

Internet connectivity: WiFi quality varies significantly across rv campgrounds in Pewee Valley vicinity. One Cummins Ferry visitor noted: "They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had," which contrasts with typical connectivity challenges reported at other regional parks.
