Shale Bluff Campground — Hardy Lake State Recreation Area

Just a really nice place to camp and enjoy the lake.

This is a great State Park offering hiking, swimming, boating, skiing, camping, interpretive naturalist program and the only DNR property in the state of Indiana with a raptor rehabilitation program. The reservoir is 741 acres with boating and fishing plus a huge beach area that is open for swimming. There are four boat launches, fishing piers, fish cleaning stations, archery range, basketball courts, shelter houses, playgrounds, raptor display and more. Hiking trails consist of 5 moderate to easy walks all under 2 miles through Indiana hardwoods, lake shoreline and even a 1700’s cemetery. Camping is in one of two areas; Wooster primitive that has a dozen sites close to the lake and Shale electric consisting of 142 gravel pad sites with 30 amp and 8 premium paved 50 amp sites. Sites are a mix of tree covered and open with most be relatively level providing a picnic table and fire pit. Potable water spigots dispersed throughout the campground and several bathhouse facilities and dump station for your convenience. The campground also has an amphitheater overlooking the lake that offers entertainment and naturalist programs. Convenient location just 15 minutes from the I-65 corridor 38.7766° N, 85.7056° W

    Still Waters Campground

    Wonderfully beautiful, peaceful, and friendly

This campground is located at the mouth of the Elkhorn Creek and Kentucky River. It is extremely popular among locals who want to sit in an tube float and float down the creek to the Kentucky River, a trip that takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Note you have to bring your own tube. Nearly all of the campsites are spacious and have grass. You can park next to your campsite. The campground is very clean, full of trees and shade, and the lawn is well manicured. On weekends you can find campers playing corn hole and karaoke. Food trucks occasionally set up on weekends. Due to the location, only Verizon and Visible cell phone users have service. There is no local Internet. There are two dump stations for RVs. There is also a hiking trail to the top of a nearby mountain. The view of the Kentucky river is magical. The office is open Wednesday thru Sunday. Use of ground mats are frowned upon as they kill the grass at the campsite but are tolerated for long term campers. They have assorted types of camping sites, including: primitive, water and electric, and full hookup. They also offer daily, weekly, weekend, seasonal, and monthly rates. The public restrooms have no heat and are closed when the weather gets cold.

Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

Great park next to the river

This is a small well maintained campground right on the Kentucky river. It is down in a hollow which makes it secluded and quiet. There is a dock and a boat ramp. The customer service is exceptional. Under new management since November, they are making some very nice upgrades. 30/50 amp full hook ups with a number of pull throughs. The sites next to the river are level and easy to back into. There is a pavilion and a pool. It is about 30 minutes from Lexington and about 8 miles to the closest town. The one lane road coming in might give you the willies but it is worth it. They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had. This is a lovely spot with nice amenities.

    Louisville South KOA

Close to Louisville and Bourbon Tours

The Louisville South KOA is approximately 25 miles south of downtown Louisville in Shepardsville, KY. The location is easy to find off the exit of 65(which also has a Walmart and other stores nearby to resupply).

The campground has both pull through gravel sites, back-in, and tent sites. The sites were close to each other but provided plenty of space for the average sized rig. Many were longer than other KOAs, which enabled the tow vehicle and TT to be parked. Full hook-ups and 30/50 amp services at the sites, some leveling required. The campground store is well stocked and the employees are very friendly.

There is a pool(no hot tub-filled in with stones), play/game area, bounce pillow, and 2 miles of hiking trails around the campground. While the campground was nice, there is a lot of“stuff”(old broken trailers, mowers, etc) laying around the edges and in need of mowing between the sites. These items tend to take away from the overall welcoming feeling of the campground.

This being said, the wifi was strong and it is very convenient to sightseeing around Nashville, especially for the price of$54 per night.

Small park restrooms and showers. Very clean. Nice pool. Camp store offers basics. Fairly close to shopping groceries etc. staff was friendly 30/50 amp service didn’t count the number of river view sites. But quite a few. Some sites have 20 X 12 elevated decks. Full hook ups. Pet friendly. Was very quiet the week we stayed. Didn’t feel like bringing the camper home so payed for another week and drive back the following week. Cell service. Isn’t the best WiFi was available if I remember. Correctly rates were reasonable

    Buffalo Trace Park

Beautiful lake and well maintained park.

We stayed a few nights at this campground in October.  The campground is made for smaller sizes but we were able to negotiate the main ring road with our 37' travel trailer.  The spot that we had reserved was in an area were we could not get into but we went to the gatehouse and they gave us another spot that was on the main ring road that we were able to park in with no issues.  Cell service was great with Verizon and AT&T service.  The lake was beautiful and the park was well maintained.  Wished the beach, paddle boats, and petting zoo was open...  Still had a great time.  We will surely come back next year when everything is open!!  Had 30 and 50 amp service with water hookups and a dump station at the exit.  Make sure you have plenty of leveling blocks.  We used all of ours and was not level.

    Two Rivers Campground

    Very Nice!

Two Rivers is a fairly new, city run campground close to I-71 and adjacent to the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers. All sites are FHU, about half of them are pull-through and all are on level pads for the rig with adjoining concrete pads with picnic tables. There is a playground for kids, a very nice bathhouse and free WiFi. We’ve stayed here on our way to and from Nashville and are doing so again this year. Can’t recommend enough!

    Still Waters Campground

Great for long term or seasonal

Lots of run down RV’s and shanty town in the back of the park. More long term renters than weekend warriors. One dump station, no sewage on the sites. One bathroom, for the whole Park. lots of tents sites (that were busy) makes for poor bathrooms. Not to mention its outhouse style with no climate control. 1/3 men’s bathrooms were out of order and 1/3 urinals were too. 2/3 showers where out of order and the two useable toilets, the door locks were broken. No wifi. Fires are allowed. Fire pits are run down so be mindful. 2/5 bars for ATT services. Sites aren’t labeled or labeled extremely bad. Electrical seems very out dated. Make sure you have protection. Over priced at $60 + tax for the night. Scattered shade. Pull through sites mainly. Picnic tables have seen better days (years more like it). Good space between sites and access to the river for water sports. Little lake for fishing. No pet area and strict leash laws. I wanna give this a 2/5 because they were pleasant. They encouraged me to review on multiple sites but I think that would be bad for them so I’ll stick to my main review site. 1/5, if the price was better like 30-40/night maybe 2/5 but for the price of a motel 6 and only electrical and that is sketchy. Save your money book elsewhere or avoid.

Guide to La Grange

RV parks near La Grange, Kentucky provide access to the Salt and Kentucky River watersheds at elevations between 500-900 feet. Most campgrounds in this region experience a humid subtropical climate with hot summers reaching 90°F and mild winters where temperatures rarely drop below 20°F. Water-based activities dominate during summer months when campground occupancy reaches 70-90%.

What to do

Water recreation on Kentucky River: Cummins Ferry RV Park offers boat launches, docks for fishing, and river access. "Beautiful river front campground that is peaceful. There is a boat ramp (perfect for my kayak), docks to go fishing off of, lots of nature and trails," notes Jenn N. The park includes riverfront trails for hiking and wildlife viewing.

Fishing opportunities: Camp on the Kentucky provides access to river fishing with tent sites starting at $17 per night. The campground features riverside spots where anglers regularly catch sizable fish. "Very nice little family ran campground. Small with limited amount of sites. However, beautiful view of the river and the owners have that down to earth southern hospitality," reports Gem S.

Live entertainment: Weekend activities at several parks include scheduled events. Elkhorn Creek RV Park hosts live music on Saturday nights with food trucks, while Cummins Ferry offers similar weekend gatherings. "The river and waterfall makes it feel like a tranquil place. The walking trail by the river is nice, we walked it almost every day. Live music and food trucks every Saturday are a nice touch!" shares Whistle P.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Follow the River RV Resort maintains high-quality restrooms and showers that impress guests. "Very friendly staff. The bathrooms having regular working toilets and showers. The bathrooms are very nice," shares Jessica G. The camp store stocks essentials and the grounds include volleyball courts and a dog park.

Level concrete pads: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained sites at Follow the River RV Resort, which feature concrete pads and shade trees. "Mostly level concrete pads, nice picnic table & fire ring. Internet, meh. Typical. We bring our own wifi (T-Mobile was fine)," explains Alan B. The park maintains good shade coverage with "a tree for shade at every lot."

Natural surroundings: Three Springs Campground provides a secluded woodland setting with hiking trails. "It is on a beautiful piece of land with wooded acres all around. It is quiet and peaceful with a true camping vibe. It has 3 beautiful hiking trails," explains one visitor. The property includes a small fishing pond with fountain and wooded sites.

What you should know

Cell service: Connectivity varies by location and carrier. At Follow the River RV Resort, T-Mobile users report good coverage, allowing campers to bring their own WiFi hotspots. "Internet, meh. Typical. We bring our own wifi (T-Mobile was fine)," notes one camper.

Site privacy: Campsite spacing differs significantly between parks. At Three Springs Campground, some sites lack privacy: "Unfortunately I couldn't find any pictures online of the sites so the one we got was not private. We stayed at site #4 and it is best suited for a group of friends because your neighbors are 10-15 yards away with no trees or anything in between."

Terrain challenges: Taylorsville Lake State Park has uneven terrain in some areas. "It was far from flat, and the space provided for the picnic table was pretty much unusable. Just about every other site there looked amazing though," reports one camper about site P02. Similarly, at Cummins Ferry, "The sites here are not level. We used our normal 2x green blocks for the Jack, but needed all 10 of our leveling blocks, plus 8 paving stones to get the appropriate height."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Follow the River RV Resort includes dedicated play areas and activities for children. "There is a pool, volleyball courts and a dog park," explains Jessica G. Other reviewers mention "kids playground" among the amenities that make this resort family-friendly.

Fishing for kids: Three Springs Campground offers a stocked pond suitable for young anglers. "A small water hole for catch-and-release fishing," notes one visitor. Families with children can fish without needing boat access, making it accessible for beginners.

Weekend activities: Elkhorn Creek RV Park schedules regular weekend entertainment suitable for all ages. "It was perfect for our kids and dogs. Kids were none stop walking the dogs, and scootering up and down the road. Everyone was so kind, there was even live music!" shares Josh S. The park maintains two play areas and a pool.

Tips from RVers

Water pressure considerations: Whispering Hills RV Park requires pressure regulators due to high water pressure. "The water pressure was quite high (70 psi) according to the worker at the campground so make sure to have a water pressure regulator," advises Martin M.

Seasonal booking: Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground operates from April through mid-December only, requiring advance planning. During peak summer weekends, occupancy can reach 90%. "We visited in July for my son's birthday party. We were near the restroom facilities which were very clean. The camping area was recently mowed," shares Heather K.

Leveling requirements: Bring extra leveling equipment when camping at Cummins Ferry. "The sites here are not level. We used our normal 2x green blocks for the Jack, but needed all 10 of our leveling blocks, plus 8 paving stones to get the appropriate height," reports Whistle P., highlighting the importance of coming prepared with adequate leveling gear.
