Osage State Fishing Lake offers free waterfront camping with access via boat, drive-in, hiking, or walking routes. Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake provides similar primitive camping options approximately 30 miles north of Baldwin City. Both areas allow tent and RV camping in designated zones without formal campground infrastructure or services.

Access to these fishing lake camping areas varies by location and season. Osage State Fishing Lake features multiple waterfront spots with some located in more secluded forested areas. Leavenworth lake has gravel pull-off areas and a lakeside gravel road but may not accommodate larger vehicles. Neither location provides drinking water, electric hookups, or trash service. Both areas permit campfires and have basic pit toilets. Camping at Osage is free while Leavenworth requires a reservation fee. According to reviews on The Dyrt, "There's sun by the bathrooms, and there's shade in the forested campground" at Leavenworth, which enforces a 7-day camping limit.

These fishing lakes provide quiet overnight options with minimal facilities. Reviews note that Osage State Fishing Lake "seems that every spots are waterfront" and one camper mentioned finding "a great spot for our van that was right on the water and mostly secluded." Both lakes experience lower visitation during weekdays but can become busier on weekends. Campers report Osage has fire rings at several locations and that larger RVs can navigate the area, noting "our 43' RV navigated smoothly" on "well-maintained roads." The primitive nature of these sites requires visitors to pack out all trash and bring necessary supplies. Cell service is generally available with Verizon reported at Osage. Both locations offer fishing opportunities with morning activity from anglers who "slept in their cars and left at first light."

      Osage State Fishing Lake

Beautiful place - big rig friendly

So glad we chose this dispersed camping location as an overnight stay. It's fantastic! Beautiful area, campfire rings in several locations, and our 43' Rv navigated smoothly (well, husband navigated smoothly!) Easy to drive through, well-maintained roads....leave no trace, and enjoy!

      Osage State Fishing Lake

      Very pretty, mostly peaceful

We found a great spot for our van that was right on the water and mostly secluded. Got pretty busy on the weekend and people had loose dogs that were causing some problems, but otherwise very chill. Lake is beautiful, decent cell service with Verizon. Pit toilets in good shape when we arrived Thursday afternoon but kind of rough by the end of the weekend.

Camp in main area to be near toilets, otherwise there’s lots of loops near the water where you can find sites with more privacy. No trash so pack it out.

      Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

      Ticks & Flat ground

The area is surrounded heavily with ticks. Be prepared if bringing animals. There is also quite a fair amount of garbage laying around the sites and down by the lake, which is sad given is seclusion and beauty. No water or power. Vaulted toilet, not well cleaned. All spots were very level and great for tent/car camping. It looked like 4 spots with fire rings and tables and a spot or 2 that you could pull into with no ring or table. Lovely fishing spot from what the locals said. Bass, catfish, and bluegill in the lake. Lake is not swimmable. Overall still nice and quiet.

      Osage State Fishing Lake

      Decent

This area had several spots around the lake. I had enough signal to make and receive calls and texts but being able to surf the internet was challenging almost impossible. I have Spectrum. The spots aren’t that private but I felt relatively safe. Clean. Gas station about 10 mins away. The area isn’t very remote. There are a couple pit toilets around.

      Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

      Quiet spot

This is a small remote lake of about 160 acres water area. A county road takes you through the area and across the dam. There are gravel pull off areas and a lakeside gravel road. The pit toilet is not well maintained. Not suitable for larger vehicles.

Perfect as an overnight on a motorcycle road trip

Soft level grass to camp on. Pit toilets. Some traffic visiting the fishing spot, but it quiets down at night. Not too far from i-70.

      Great stop for the night

Pulled in late and left early. Lots of level grassy space available, and the lake looked really nice. A few other overnighters were there. Not too much time is added if you’re traveling i70. Poop on the toilet seat in the pit toilet so we waited until we got to a gas station in the morning. People are animals.

      Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

7-day limit. No trash cans or water, but it's free.

There's sun by the bathrooms, and there's shade in the forested campground. Everything is as great as it can be, aside from missing trash cans, and ideally water and grey dump, but that's usually rare to find water and a grey dump at a free site.

I'm starting to think that Kansas has a 7-day limit instead of a 14 because this is the second time that a Kansas park official came to the door and said we need to leave. So I'm going to treat all Kansas places as a 7-day limit.

    Guide to Baldwin City

Dispersed camping near Baldwin City, Kansas focuses on primitive camping opportunities in state fishing lakes with few amenities. Most sites offer natural lakeside settings with minimal development. Temperatures in the area range from winter lows around 20°F to summer highs in the 90s, with the camping season typically running April through October when water access is most reliable.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Anglers visit Osage State Fishing Lake primarily for bass, crappie, and catfish. The lake provides multiple shoreline access points for both day use and overnight camping. "Woke up to a beautiful sunrise," reports Joseph J., highlighting the early morning fishing potential.

Wildlife observation: Early morning and evening hours provide opportunities to spot local wildlife. "Beautiful and peaceful," notes Daniel S. about his experience at Osage State Fishing Lake, where quiet campers can observe deer, various bird species, and occasionally small mammals like raccoons.

Stargazing: The minimal light pollution at Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake creates favorable conditions for night sky viewing. The open areas around the lake provide unobstructed views. "This site was easy to find and had a beautiful view of the lake," mentions Reagan G., whose review suggests the open sightlines that benefit stargazers.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many visitors appreciate the natural spacing between camping areas. At Osage State Fishing Lake, Lucy P. found "a great spot for our van that was right on the water and mostly secluded," noting that campers can find more privacy by exploring "lots of loops near the water where you can find sites with more privacy."

Lake access: Direct water access ranks highly among camper preferences. "It seems that every spots are waterfront, it's a very nice and clean place, I love it," writes Ray L. about the Osage fishing lake, confirming the abundance of lakeside camping opportunities.

Quiet weekday camping: For those seeking solitude, weekday visits offer significantly lower occupancy. "Camped here several days in late June. There were very few campers, even on the weekends," reports Kevin C. about his stay at Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake, suggesting that even weekend crowds remain manageable.

    What you should know

No amenities: Primitive camping means no potable water, electricity, or trash service. "No trash so pack it out," reminds Lucy P. about camping at Osage State Fishing Lake. Campers must bring all necessary supplies and practice strict leave-no-trace principles.

Restroom facilities: Basic pit toilets provide minimal sanitation. "Pit toilet is not well maintained," notes John G. about Leavenworth lake, while another camper mentioned that toilets at Osage were "in good shape when we arrived Thursday afternoon but kind of rough by the end of the weekend."

Stay limits: Kansas state fishing lakes enforce camping duration restrictions. Leavenworth State Fishing Lake maintains a 7-day limit rather than the 14 days common in some areas, with a camper reporting "a Kansas park official came to the door and said we need to leave" after a week.

    Tips for camping with families

Site selection: Look for campsites with natural features that create boundaries. "There's sun by the bathrooms, and there's shade in the forested campground," notes Rick M. about Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake, highlighting the option to choose sites based on sun exposure needs for children.

Weekend considerations: Be prepared for increased activity on weekends. Lucy P. observed that Osage State Fishing Lake "got pretty busy on the weekend and people had loose dogs that were causing some problems," suggesting families should select sites farther from main access points for weekend stays.

Water safety: Lakes have no lifeguards or designated swimming areas. The natural shorelines at these fishing lakes vary in steepness and underwater conditions, requiring constant supervision of children near water. "Lake is beautiful," mentions Lucy P., but parents should note these are primarily fishing lakes without designated swimming infrastructure.

    Tips from RVers

Road conditions: Internal roads at these fishing lakes vary in quality and width. "Easy to drive through, well-maintained roads," reports Brenda Y. about her experience at Osage State Fishing Lake, noting that her "43' RV navigated smoothly" on the access roads.

Site accessibility: Smaller vehicles generally have more options. "Easy in for a Ford transit," notes Robert B. about his arrival at Osage State Fishing Lake, while John G. cautions that Leavenworth lake is "not suitable for larger vehicles" with only "gravel pull off areas and a lakeside gravel road."

Overnight parking: Some locations see frequent turnover. Kevin C. noted that at Leavenworth, "Many slept in their cars and left at first light," indicating that some areas function as overnight stops for fishing rather than multi-day camping destinations.
