    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Several RV parks provide accommodations near Smithland in western Iowa. On-Ur-Wa RV Park in Onawa operates from April 15 to October 15 with full hookup sites that include 50-amp electrical connections, water, and sewer services. The park features level pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs. "This small campground is right off the interstate, easy to get to. Sites are close, but for a one night stay that was just fine," notes one traveler. Sunset at Blue Oasis RV Park offers similar amenities with gravel sites that accommodate larger vehicles, though some spots may require minimal leveling. Browns Lake Bigelow Park provides waterfront camping with 50-amp electric, water and sewer hookups, operating May through October.

Full hookup RV sites typically cost $20-45 per night throughout the region. Most parks maintain clean restroom facilities with showers, though water quality varies—visitors to some area campgrounds report strong metallic taste in the water. Cell service is generally reliable at established RV parks, with AT&T coverage noted at multiple locations. Pet policies differ between facilities; while most allow pets, Winnavegas Casino RV Park prohibits them entirely. Several campgrounds offer dump stations for those without full hookup sites. Reservation systems vary by location—Browns Lake operates on a first-come basis while others like Sunset at Blue Oasis accept advance bookings. During summer weekends and special events, early arrival is recommended as many parks fill quickly.

      Scenic Park

      Along the Missouri River

Scenic Park Campground is in South Sioux City along the Missouri River. Our campsite had a river view, picnic table, and fire ring. The campground is part of a large park and was full hookups with cable and wifi included. Our site was a pull through. The area was clean and had a nice appearance. There was also 4 unique modern looking cabins and a tent area.

The park also has tennis courts, soccer fields, and baseball fields. There is a swimming pool and playgrounds, along with trails. The trails I loved were along the river. The only con was that There was a major highway on the other side of the river and ambulances would pass by with sirens going. Otherwise a nice campground.

      Cottonwood Cove Park Campground

      Tiny and QUIET!

Cottonwood Cove Park was the fifth campsite we rolled into in this tri-state area looking for a spot that we actually liked, and boy did we score! This is a little municipal park with only 12 sites, water/electric/cable TV for $22/night. Be aware that there is no dump station here. There's a small bath house that's presently closed for COVID-19 precautions.

Driveways and the road through the campground are crushed white gravel, but there are small concrete pads at each site for the rig and patio area. Large cottonwood trees tower throughout the campground. There are tiny campers and large fifth-wheels here, both. There's a campground host occupying one site, and you pay the host. Spacing between sites is very, very generous -- kudos to Dakota City for not cramming people into this place just to double the revenue.

The campground buts up right against a pretty natural stretch of the west bank of the Missouri River, with a boat launch and interpretive platform discussing Lewis & Clark's expedition that passed through here. The campground itself is tucked right into the middle of a neat, tidy residential neighborhood, such that it almost feels like you're part of the neighborhood.

It's been amazingly quiet during our stay. We've barely seen our neighbors, much less heard them even though the campground is mostly occupied. There are several rigs here that are long-term, presumably they're working at the massive Tyson Foods plant just up the road.

Cell service on Verizon is an impressive 4 bars, 42ms ping/65.6 Mbps down/24.8 Mbps up/3ms jitter.

We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

      Scenic Park

      Nice Stopover Spot

We stayed with our class A RV on our way to and from a further destination. First spot was one right along the river. All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you. This spot had a nice concrete pad with a picnic table (not so nice with peeling paint). Views of the river and city were nice. Full hook-ups with sewer, water, electric, cable, and wi-if. Second spot was not on the river but equally spacious. No concrete pad with this one. Bathhouses were a mixed bag. One was large with numerous stalls and showers and very clean. The other quite small (2 stalls and one shower) and not so clean. Had to step around empty shampoo and conditioner bottles on floor and a used razor on the soap dish.....there in the early evening and still there around 9 the next morning. Many of the sites seemed to be extended stay and not all trailers were well kept.....plastic covering windows, haphazard decks, etc. All-in-all though an Ok stopover in a longer trip.

      Neligh Park Campground

      Quiet camping in the city

Neligh Park campground features level concrete pads with gravel in front of each site. Every site includes a picnic table along with electric and water hookups. There is an on-site dump station that costs$2.00 if you are not staying at the park. Camping is $15 per night. Some sites are reservable online, while others can be paid for when you arrive.  The sites do not offer much shade as the trees planted around them are still small. The campground is in a quiet part of town.

The city park is adjacent to the campground. The city park has a newer, large playground, sand volleyball courts, and a walking trail that loops around the lake. There is also a community Aquatic Center on the premises that features a pool and a large water slide.

There appears to be a modern restroom building near the newer part of the park. There are a few fast food restaurants located a short drive away from the campground.

      Scenic Park

      Nice quiet park

Host was very friendly and helpful. They had some spots on the river. We stayed in a pull through that was very spacious with picnic table and fire pit. Spectated by trees so your not on top of your neighbor. Bathrooms and showers were very clean! Although no hand soap so bring your own. Showers were free and they had bikes you could check out to ride around. Park is super close to huge park with Tennis courts and other activities.

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

      Clean & kid friendly

Well kept & family friendly camping in Iowa! We were able to reserve an electric unit (#30) right off the lake and across the road from the large playground (~5 setups for different age groups). We could watch the kids play while getting food ready or preparing a line to throw in the water. Short walk to the very clean restrooms with flush toilets & showers. Will come back!

      Nice Stopover Spot

We stayed with our class A RV on our way to and from a further destination in early July. First spot was one right along the river. All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you. This spot had a nice concrete slab with a picnic table (not so nice with peeling paint). Views of the river and city were nice. Full hook-ups with sewer, water, electric and (spotty) WiFi. Second spot was not on the river but equally spacious. No concrete patio with this one. Bathhouse’s were a mixed bag. One was large with numerous stalls and showers and very clean. The other quite small (2 stalls and one shower) and not so clean. Had to step around empty shampoo and conditioner bottles on the floor and a used razor on the soap dish...there in the early evening and still around 9 the next morning. Many sites seemed to be extended stay and not all were well kept...plastic covering windows, haphazard decks, etc. All-in-all though an OK one night stopover spot if you’re traveling through.

      Cottonwood Cove Park Campground

      City campground in quiet neighborhood

Concrete pads, very little leveling needed. Plenty of space in between sites. Dappled shade. Easily accessible for any size rig. We didn’t use bath/shower facility; it required a code from the city. Portapotties were available in campground. Garbage dumpster, but no recycling. Dump station available, but area may be a bit tight for larger rigs to access. Camp host on site. No laundry. Some train noise. Excellent Verizon signal. Nice park with boat ramp and scenic overlook on the Missouri River. Campground is located about 5 minutes off the interstate.

      Scenic Park

      Great spot close to everything

We found the Scenic Park RV Campground when we were looking for a spot to stay close to Sioux City, IA for a sports event for our sons. We were extremely happy with this city run campground.

The pads are in great shape. They offer full hookups. We did not have a full hookup site, but still had water, electric, and free cable tv. The view from our camper of the Missouri River and the Sioux City skyline was pretty great.

The staff is friendly and welcoming. The location is quiet and everyone staying there seemed very nice as well. Will definitely be back when we’re up that way again next year.

    Guide to Smithland

Recreational vehicle camping options around Smithland, Iowa provide convenient access to western Iowa's loess hills region and Missouri River recreation areas. Most campgrounds in the area maintain open seasons from May through October due to Iowa's freezing winter temperatures. Visitors can find a mix of county-operated parks and privately owned RV facilities within a 30-mile radius of Smithland.

    What to do

Swimming and water recreation: Browns Lake Bigelow Park offers a swimming beach without lifeguards and fishing opportunities from a newly constructed dock. "This is a beautiful park, well maintained, quiet and borders Browns Lake 10 Miles from Sioux City. CG has horse shoe pits, Basketball, volleyball courts, playground for the kids and a swimming beach," notes one visitor.

Walking trails: Snyder Bend County Park features lakeside walking paths ideal for evening strolls. "This was a restful stop. Sites had plenty of space between and it was very quiet. There's a nice long sidewalk for an evening stroll," writes one camper. Another visitor adds, "Nice relaxing place and plenty of park."

Gravel biking: The terrain around Snyder Bend provides opportunities for cycling enthusiasts. A traveler mentioned, "Great spot to stay and gravel bike. Wish I had more time."

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Little Sioux Park Campground receives praise for its well-maintained grounds and amenities. "Great campground with lots of campsites to choose from, they have lots of buddy system sites!" says one reviewer. The park features "a small beach area for swimming. Two playgrounds. Very nice field of wild comb flowers blooming near the shower house."

Spacious sites: Campers appreciate the room between sites at many Smithland area RV parks. At Snyder Bend, a visitor noted, "Spots have water and electric for $25/night." Another camper commented, "Spacious, green, quiet. Just not level. Plan on using your leveling blocks."

Convenient overnight stops: Bob Hardy RV Park in Blair, Nebraska offers easy access for travelers passing through the region. "Decent park and great price! We stayed 2 nights for my husband to do a job down the road. Shower house could have been cleaner but you can't beat the price at $17.50/night!"

    What you should know

Reservation systems: Most Woodbury County parks operate on a first-come, first-served basis. At Snyder Bend, "No reservation needed. Self check-in before 10pm. $25 for electric & water hookup. Lake facing spaces available if not already taken."

Seasonal considerations: Insect activity increases during summer evenings at Smithland area campgrounds. "Yes. There are mosquitoes at dusk," warns a Snyder Bend visitor. Another notes, "Mosquitoes were bad" at the same location.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between parks. While Browns Lake offers "4 individual shower rooms+ 4 individual/private toilet, sink, shower rooms handicapped accessible," other facilities may be less maintained. One visitor to Little Sioux noted, "The shower house was less than stellar. IMO it's cleanliness kept this review from being considered near 4 stars."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Odebolt Memorial Walk RV Park includes a small playground for children within a compact camping area. "Cute tiny town with a cute little spot to park the camper. Located near the crick and manicured walking path," notes a visitor. The town also features "a little drive-in and a couple gas stations."

ADA accessibility: Browns Lake Bigelow Park provides accessibility features. "Newly constructed Handicapped ramp to fishing jetty and nice big fishing/boat dock that is at the rear of the CG. Restrooms/showers were newer, modern and spotless and also served as a tornado safe shelter."

Site selection strategy: For lake views, arrive early. "We came in mid Friday and there were several sites available with one site still available lake side which we took," reports a Browns Lake camper. "Numerous trees and sites are spacious."

    Tips from RVers

Check amenities: Sunset at Blue Oasis RV Park near Smithland provides gravel sites suitable for larger rigs. "The gravel site we were on fit our 40 ft fifth wheel without a problem but was slightly off level. Amy and Ed are very helpful and friendly, the bathrooms/showers are beautiful and immaculate."

Leveling requirements: Many RV parks Smithland visitors encounter have slightly uneven terrain. At Snyder Bend, a reviewer advised, "Plan on using your leveling blocks."

Casino parking options: Be aware that not all RV areas qualify as true campgrounds. Winnavegas Casino RV Park is described by one visitor as "basically literally a parking lot at the far end of the property for RV hookups outside of the casino."
