    Rivers Bend Campground

    Very nice campground

Decent size spots with lakefront views at just about all of them. There is a swimming hole with a little beach and walking/bike trail. They have tent sites that you have to walk to but they are right on the water away from all of the RV sites. The town of Rock Valley is small but very quaint. I'd reccomend the coffee shop Rooted. Will definitely be coming back here.

    KOA Campground North Sioux City

    Nice

This KOA is well-maintained, a little older but the grounds are nice and it is well organized and maintained. The dog park is not so well-maintained but was adequate and the pool was clean, and there is easy access to the freeway Both north and south

    Sioux Falls KOA

    Awesome pet-friendly stopover

We decided to stay at this campground because it was close to Falls Park. It’s 4 miles away from the KOA to Downtown. It wasn’t crowded, very clean, met lots of Texans and the pet areas were awesome! In fact, Sioux Falls is a very dog-friendly city and was able to take my dog everywhere! The showers were great if you don’t want to use your own in your camper, but they have laundry and such if you need it. We were close to the showers, pet area and laundry house. Yea, it’s next to a Camping World but you know what, it was a great stay with nice folks and the road noise really isn’t a problem, especially if you just go in your camper and watch tv because you shouldn’t be there for that. 🙃 They just opened for the season so they are still adding some things but I would recommend! We were grateful to stay and not travel during 50mph winds.

    Elk Point City Park Campground

    Basic and economical

Cute and historical city park that offers multiple 30 Amp hook up sites for $15. Water is available. Lots of play grounds, dog park, disc golf, and historic Lewis and Clark campsite.

    Sioux Falls Yogi Bear

    Great for passing through

Clean bathrooms and showers and close to Falls Park. Tons of amenities for families with kids. Close to the interstate. Great for a one night stay on the way to bigger and better sights. Stayed with a dog and was glad to see the other campers had their pets leashed at all times.

    Blue Mounds State Park Campground

    A Fine Park

Stayed for 3 nights. Very shady, but does not have sewer or water hookup. 30 amp electric service. Grounds are well maintained and the restroom and shower facilities are very up to date but heavily used. Sites are closer than I like. Park has nice trails and bluffs. Bison are within the park but did not see. Rangers and staff very friendly. Would be great for overnighter. The most irritating thing about the park were the next door neighbors who let their five dogs use our campsite as an area for deification. People with pets need to be respectful of others. I have come to the conclusion that all pets should be banned from public lands.

    Tower Campground

Right on the highway, so convenient, but noisy

A parking lot style campground with nice green areas for pets. Level sites, full hookups. If you are looking for a convenient spot by Sioux Falls, this one fits the bill. Book online as staff is not in the office (or at least were not when we arrived).

Guide to Rock Valley

Rock Valley camping opportunities span across eastern Iowa's agricultural landscape at around 1,300 feet elevation. The area features a mix of prairie and riverfront terrain with summer temperatures regularly reaching 85-90°F from June through August. Seasonal closures affect most campgrounds from late October through mid-April when freezing temperatures make water hookups unavailable.

What to do

Hiking trails through prairie landscapes: Sandy Hollow Park Campground offers nature trails through restored prairie areas that showcase native Iowa ecosystems. "Great spot with a swimming lake, fishing lake, and hiking trails through the prairie. Less than three miles from town," notes Miranda M.

Kayaking and water activities: Island Park provides river access with swimming and fishing opportunities. Amber P. shares, "Very cheap, 15$ a night for rv with electric and water, 5$ for tents. Huge swimming area with slides for kids, and river with a lot of fish!!! Brand New shower houses."

Frisbee golf: Big Sioux Recreation Area includes a disc golf course among its recreational options. The park also features "tons of trails" according to MalibuDave42 L., who adds, "Super clean, nicely spaced, tons of trails. As Google guided is to the campground, we were getting concerned. Turns out, great campsite."

What campers like

Clean, well-maintained facilities: Newton Hills Campground receives consistent praise for its upkeep. Victor E. notes, "Beautiful, quiet, shaded, level sites with plenty of space between. Great trails and a short scenic road, plus some nice open spaces. Bath facilities are convenient, but seem old and marginally maintained. Great stargazing."

Affordable camping options: Camping costs range from $5 for tent sites to $33 for electric sites across the region. At Island Park, sarita P. mentions, "Very nice quiet campground. The sign says all sites are $15 but online it says you can rent camp in the grass for $5 so just write that on the slip when you pay."

Lakefront views: Rivers Bend Campground offers premium water views at most sites. Kaitlin B. states, "Decent size spots with lakefront views at just about all of them. There is a swimming hole with a little beach and walking/bike trail. They have tent sites that you have to walk to but they are right on the water away from all the RV sites."

What you should know

Summer heat considerations: During peak summer months, temperatures often exceed 85°F. Shade can be limited at some campgrounds. Sally C. from Newton Hills notes, "Many campsites are almost full sun—so have your shade structure ready. Evenings very peaceful."

Water issues: Some parks have experienced water contamination or drought conditions. For example, Zach E. mentions about Newton Hills: "Everything was great. There are plenty of parks and paved roadways to wander around on. The spots are nice. The only thing that could be approved would be more established, kid friendly trails into the woods. Also, the lake is currently dried up but that's no one's fault!"

Noise levels vary by location: Campgrounds near towns may experience noise from local activities. At Island Park, John G. warns, "Nice campground. The night we stayed, there was racing going on at Rapid Speedway that lasted well into the evening. Extremely LOUD. Make sure to check the race schedule the night you want to stay."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming areas with kid-friendly features: Sandy Hollow Park provides a dedicated swimming beach with facilities for children. According to James M., the park includes "swimming beach, fishing, boating, hiking including access to Sioux Center's trail system, shelters, lodge, archery range. Playground, canoe/kayak rentals."

Pet-friendly considerations: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Rock Valley require leashes and current vaccination records. Blue Mounds State Park Campground offers wooded sites that provide shade for pets and children. Bruce P. notes, "Very quiet even on holidays, sites are in the woods so all sites have shade. All types of camping is available."

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. Amber P. simply states about Rivers Bend, "Lots of fun for kiddos," while Nicholas S. shares that Newton Hills is "perfect to relax and bring the kids! I had an amazing time at Newton Hills Campground with my family and young children. The spacious and clean facilities provided the perfect backdrop for our outdoor getaway."

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Rock Valley BiCentennial Park Campground offers complete RV services despite its small size. Tiffany K. shares, "Wonderful little park with full hookups. Loved it only 6 spots!"

Electric amperage options: Most campgrounds offer 30-amp service, while some provide 50-amp connections. At Island Park, Daniel C. advises, "All sites have electricity but only 20/30/60 amps. Water spigots are spread throughout the campground. A dump station is located at the west entrance across the driveway from the pay station."

Site spacing and privacy: RV sites vary in size and separation. At Lake Pahoja Recreation Area, Carrie F. notes, "No hook ups. Gorgeous setting, several spots are not level, small size. Good distance from others, yet close enough for group."
