    Swan Lake State Park Campground

    Not very tent friendly

This state park camp site close to Carroll, Iowa was nice, but we were the only tent campers there, it seemed more like a permanent RV home site. The bathrooms while nice had no working showers, they had showers but no way to turn on the water. There was a cute frisbee golf on property, a beautiful lake, and a nice paved walking path.

    Prairie Rose State Park Campground

    The most windy experience ever

We showed up easter sunday when everyone in the loop left except one van, so it was pretty empty. But the wind was so intense an constant. Probably about 20 to 25mph wind all day and night. Temp was mid 70s to 80s. Well kept sites and the park ranger came through to check reservations were correct on the posts. Random people did come through the loop area to either hang out or go to the trail, which alerted our dogs everytime. We even thought some lady did a drug deal by grabbing an orange bag from one of the electric posts then left, pretty weird. We stayed on site 81 next to water which was essential. Big lake close by to fish which I'm guessing the only thing to do here other than walk the trail. I ran the trail for a workout, it's all grass around the lake. All the sites are pretty close together, about 20 to 30 apart so of you like that then there you go, but we wanted space for our dogs and privacy. Stayed 2 nights. All views of corn.

    Prairie Rose State Park Campground

    Beautiful Park

These Iowa state parks are extremely clean and well taken care of. The lake is huge with multiple trails that the kids loved. Playground was directly behind us which is a plus for us.

    Prairie Rose State Park Campground

    Peace & quiet

Reserved electric unit 090 for the weekend, which had a scenic corn field for a backdrop - this is Iowa! Paved roads, level gravel sites, wide & mowed trails, clean pit toilets and a layout that isn’t too cramped. The pond has multiple shoreline fishing spots with picnic tables and a cleaning station. Basic playground in front of the beach which is a short drive or a ~1 mile trail walk away.

    Albert the Bull Campground

Not our preferred type of camping

We often seek out city parks for eating lunch when on the road and this is how we found this park/campground. Albert, the world’s largest bull, was constructed in 1964 as a way to draw tourists to the area. Press the button to hear him bellow and learn his history.

Albert is part of a park and campground, which is located next to a pool and water park. The campground is ok but nothing special. On a Monday afternoon in August, only two sites were occupied, and no one seemed to be around but judging by the overflowing dumpster, I’m guessing it was full over the weekend. Sites were typical of what I have come to expect in many campgrounds in Iowa – close together and no physical separation between them. Full hookup sites are $20; all others are $15. There is only one toilet and shower each for women and men; it was in reasonable shape but not the best.

Since the park is adjacent, there is a nice playground and this, along with learning about Albert’s history, might be entertaining for children. I am not sure if non-residents can access the pool/water park; although it was open, no one was there when I was there- this may have been due to Covid.

    Prairie Rose State Park Campground

Prairie Rose is hidden next to a beautiful lake

I really like Prairie Rose State Park. It is about ten miles north of Interstate 80 near Harlan, Iowa. The lake is gorgeous and has many different view points. There is plenty of space and a lot of different activities. A lot of folks fish and picnic. There are also a lot of geese.

The camp sites have great views of the lake and the park was pretty empty when I visited. This park truly is a rose in the prairie.

    Spring Lake County Park

    Nice Family Campground

There are campsites along the lake with easy access to shoreline. There are approximately 100 sites. There is a playground and disc golf. There is a roller rink and a concession stand. This is a very busy campground in the summer. There are reservable sites on mycountyparks.com. There is a golf course that borders the park.

Guide to Lake View

Camping near Lake View, Iowa offers opportunities for pet owners who want to explore the state parks and county campgrounds of west-central Iowa. The area sits at approximately 1,224 feet above sea level in the gently rolling terrain of Sac County. Seasonal temperatures range from summer highs averaging 83°F to winter lows around 10°F, with peak camping season running April through October when conditions are most favorable.

What to do

Lake activities year-round: Black Hawk Lake spans 957 acres with multiple access points for fishing and water recreation. "Beautiful lake. Pretty busy with lots of campers. Nice walking path around the lake," notes Kim K. about Black Hawk State Park.

Hiking with pets: Follow the 3-mile paved trail circling Swan Lake for exercise with your dog. A camper at Swan Lake State Park Campground shares, "We took a bike ride around it was about 3 ish miles. Camp host was a gem. Bathrooms were very clean!"

Disc golf: Swan Lake features an 18-hole disc golf course suitable for all skill levels adjacent to camping areas. "There was a cute frisbee golf on property, a beautiful lake, and a nice paved walking path," writes Deborah C. about the recreation options.

What campers like

River access: Sac City Park positions campers directly alongside the Raccoon River with sites that accommodate tents and RVs. As Annie C. from Sac City Park explains: "The campground is on the banks of the Raccoon Creek... There are some neat buildings scattered around like an old log cabin and an amazing huge round Chautauqua meeting building."

Spacious electric sites: Yellow Smoke Park offers well-maintained electrical sites with ample space between units. According to MomOfBoys W., "This campground was perfect for a small family reunion. We rented out their 3 cabins and had a whole area to ourselves. The kids could walk down to the sand and a bridge."

Clean facilities: Camp hosts maintain excellent bathroom and shower facilities throughout the season. A visitor at Featherstone County Park mentioned: "I enjoyed the campground host, very helpful. The campsites were clean and well maintained."

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds in the area operate from April through October, with limited winter availability. Swan Lake State Park notes an operating season of "Apr 15 - Oct 31" with facilities closing for the colder months.

Pet policies: While most campgrounds welcome pets, standard leash requirements apply, typically 6 feet or shorter. Cleanup is mandatory with disposal facilities provided at most locations.

Site spacing considerations: Some campgrounds have tighter arrangements that may impact campers with large rigs. Jeannie D. observed at Featherstone County Park: "Snug if you have slide outs, must watch to see you don't hit neighbor's trailer as you extend. Awnings literally touch neighbors."

Tips for camping with families

Cabin options for comfort: Several locations offer cabin accommodations as alternatives to tent camping for families with pets. Yellow Smoke Park receives praise for its family-friendly cabins: "We rented out their 3 cabins and had a whole area to ourselves. The kids could walk down to the sand and a bridge. Very well kept."

Playground access: Many campgrounds include playground equipment for children. Shane T. mentions at Swan Lake: "Great park! Great trail all the way around the lake... Great view of the lake."

Swimming beaches: Designated swimming areas provide safe recreation for children at several locations. Buena Vista County Park includes "a nice little beach to go swimming on. They clean the beach every morning," according to Willy W.

Tips from RVers

Hookup locations: Position your RV carefully to reach utilities at Camp Crescent. Bruce P. from Camp Crescent Park notes: "Utility location did require us to use a longer hose and extension cord to reach from our site. Nice town and trails for biking nearby."

Site selection for larger rigs: Choose sites carefully if you have a larger RV with slides. "Gets busy on the holidays and some areas are pretty tight if your pulling a large unit," observes Bruce P. about holiday weekends at Camp Crescent.

Full hookup availability: For extended stays, select campgrounds with complete utility connections. Hagge County Park offers "15 sites available with full hookups, but it is a great, quieter place than most," according to Lori N.
