One of the most photographed locations in the state, Garden of the Gods' scenic beauty is extraordinary. In the recreation area you can hike, camp, nature watch or picnic.

The Observation Trail features unique sandstone rock formations and panoramic views of the surrounding Garden of the God Wilderness. Interpretive signs explain the geological history. The 1/4-mile trail is made of natural sandstone and takes about an hour to walk. It contains short, steep grades and steps; benches are located along the trail and as a whole the trail is not tiring. Caution should be used due to the high cliffs in the area.

Overnight parking allowed at Backpacker's Parking Lot only (Indian Point Trailhead). Pets are allowed only on a leash. Picnic areas and Observation Trail are open 6am-10pm. Use trash receptacles where available. Pack It In, Pack It Out while on trails. Camp only at designated sites in the campground. Disposable food and beverage containers are not permitted on the Observation Trail. Stay on the designated trail and leave the beauty of the rocks and plants for others to enjoy.

            Municipal park for small rigs

Don’t even try it with anything larger than a 20 ft travel trailer. Super convenient. 110v. 15amp electrical. Shared water. Gravel somewhat level pads. Poor communication. Info kinda available on the municipal website. 1st come.

            Enjoyable time

Campground was quiet and well kept. Foliage was well trimmed. There was a spot from previous campers that needed cleaned up, but that's more of a reflection of the previous campers and less the camp ground, in my opinion, as it was not an overall theme.

            Stellar Illinois

This is a little gem of a refuge within the Shawnee NF - about 30min from Marion, down a beautiful country road before nestling among the trees around the lake. The drive is paved/gravel the whole way, so very easily drivable for anyone in anything. Plenty of camp sites, both with electric and non-electric, double and single. Bring bug spray - horseflies and ticks. Beautiful lake, beautiful biking trails, etc. Firepits w/ grates are spacious and nice, fees are online. 1 bar verizon at camp, can get up to 3 bars within the area.

            Great park

We had a great experience with the park itself. The grounds were very well maintained with trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. We were there on a Sunday night and were the only campers in the park.

The star I knocked off was for the pit toilets. They had not been limed in a while as evidenced by the bugs swarming inside the pits and larva swimming in the bottom. If I didn’t have a portable travel potty of my own, I would have not given even four stars. I may not have camped here.

            Excellent KOA in Grayville I-64

We stayed here on the way to and on the way home from The Kentucky Bourbon Trail. It is a fairly new KOA with so many enjoyable amenities, family fun, food, ice cream, mini golf, full hookups and shady spots if you ask for one. We want to go back and stay at a patio lot with a swing. Staff is friendly and helpful. Nearby services, fuel, farm store, etc.

            Great place to camp!

We stayed 4 days and had a great time. The camp was clean and well maintained. The staff are very friendly and helpful and was more than happy to offer places to visit in the area, places to eat and provide assistance as needed. The trails are paved so we had a nice area to walk (twice around the lake from our site was 3 miles). :) We plan to visit again!

            Great campground with persistent raccoons

Harmonie State Park looks like a great place for a family vacation. In addition to the campground with at least 2 playgrounds, there are trails, picnic areas and a boat ramp. We only stayed 1 night. Site 166 is big and on the end of a road. There's a restroom and water spigot within walking distance. They have showers but we didn't use them. Our only problem was 1 or more raccoons kept coming into our site. We shooed them away but they kept coming back. I'm sure they were just looking for food.

            Nice State Park Campground

We stayed here for the eclipse in April. No real issues. Kids had plenty of room to run around, hike and safely ride bikes around the campground. Showers and bathrooms were typical for a state park.

There were heavy storms the night before the eclipse and everyone in tents were completely soaked. The area around our site had really poor drainage. We had noisy neighbors that were up until at least 2 or 3 with zero regards for anyone else trying to sleep.

            Great Campground

Only $26 a night for full-hookups is amazing. Cell service for AT&T is marginal at 2 bars LTE. Only issue that I have is that site 49 is very hard to get level in, make sure that you bring extra leveling blocks if possible

            Camp site #83

It had electeic hook up but we were tent camping early May 2024. The campsite is mostly hill with a wash out running through it. It is also the breeding site of thousands of Miner Bees. They were docile and no one got stung but they were everywhere from sun up to sun down the entire site hummed with bees. The entire ground was full of holes that they were coming in and out of. Close to bathroom/showers and a playground, fresh water source across the road.

            Solar Eclipse Crossroads

We camped here during the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse and it was also the overflow site which at that time was the side of the camp entrance road. Fast forward to April 7,8 & 9 2024 We are again on overflow campground where this time was their group camping site which was much better than the side of the road. The overflow site has 4 unisex bathrooms but no showers (showers are at the main campground) there is dining (open) pavilion with a fireplace and a filtered well water system. We had a blast watching the Total Solar Eclipse.

            Great campground

Sites are nice, although all sites face each other meaning you will be 5-10 feet from your neighbors if you are sitting out front. Full-hookups with only a 50amp connection so if you are using 30 make sure you have a 50/30 adapter. Overall very nice campground, well maintained.

            Harmonie State Park

            Nice, clean, state park.

Everything was well kept and clean. Multiple bath/shower houses on each loop. Push button showers. Takes about a minute to get water hot, but good after that. Dated, but clean and functional. The lights stay on 24/7 so bugs are in the shower house.

Multiple walking trails and bike trails. Nice shelter houses and picnic areas. Multiple playgrounds. Nature center in the campground. Many events scheduled for summer. New Harmony (town) is close by and a must stop. Nature walks, lots of unique history you will find nowhere else, quaint shopping, coffee shops, wine bar, dining, etc...

The pool has been filled in at the park. Very disappointing.

I was demolished by mosquitos and was covered in deet. Tried picaridin too. If you get the biters off you, the gnats were all over me too. Not sure if just time of year or maybe always this way (did rain multiple times).

Couldn't use mountain bike trails and most hike trails as it was too wet.

Suggest calling before making reservations because many of electric sites are not level, at all. Ask which would be best.

            Nice national park campground

Location is everything and this is well in the middle of a great area in Shawnee National Forest. Garden of the gods, Bell Smith springs, Ferne State park, and on and on. You can spend a week here and not see everything.
There are primitive and electric (with water) sites. There are no sites with sewer hookup. There is a dump station at the entrance.

Sites are generally level and well kept. Very large rigs (35+) will be challenging, but I've seen them - more towards the front. There are some lake front spots that can be had. Sites are first come and there are no reservations taken. During the week, no problem. Weekends would be iffy.

Large lake with swimming, fishing, kayaking. Also has a bike trail around it - maybe 2 miles.

Shower houses are kept clean, but as of this posting, they need some maintenance work.

All in all, this is a must stop if you want to enjoy what the area has to offer.

            Crab Orchard Lake Campground

            Excellent Lakeside Campgrouind

Getting there: Easy access off Illinois 13 East of Carbondale

Check in and staff: Campground is now under the egis of recreation.gov& reservations through them are a must. This is new& when planning the trip the website said“first come first serve” so we arrived on a Friday evening(4pm) with no reservation. The sign said RV sites all taken. The host was wonderful! He has been here 9 years and steered us to a nice site for the one night we will be here. The online experience with recreation.gov was not pleasant, impossible in fact. So I had to call. This took quite awhile. Once I got a real live person it was great, and we got our site with no problems.

Amenities: Bathrooms: clean, paper towels& air dryers.

Site: A-35. In the middle of the A loop and therefore not on the water. Still, very nice. After all, beggars can’t be choosers! Sites are somewhat spacious, but not terribly private.

          Guide to McLeansboro

Camping near McLeansboro, Illinois, offers a variety of beautiful spots for outdoor enthusiasts. From serene lakes to scenic trails, there’s something for everyone in this area.

          What to do:

          • Hiking: Explore the trails at Giant City State Park Campground. One visitor said, “The shorter trails in the park were beautiful even in the winter.” Another camper noted, “We found several short but gorgeous hiking trails, which was perfect for our young children.”
          • Fishing: Head to Gun Creek for some fishing. A reviewer mentioned, “Clean facilities. Self check-in. Golf onsite, clubhouse with food.” This makes it a great spot to relax by the water.
          • Picnicking: Enjoy a picnic at Harmonie State Park Campground. One camper shared, “In addition to the campground with at least 2 playgrounds, there are trails, picnic areas and a boat ramp.”

          What campers like:

          • Cleanliness: Campers appreciate the well-maintained facilities. A visitor at Shawnee Forest Campground said, “The camp was clean and well maintained.” Another camper echoed this sentiment, stating, “The bathrooms are very clean and well lit.”
          • Friendly staff: Many campers mention the helpfulness of the staff. At Harmonie State Park Campground, a reviewer noted, “The staff was extremely friendly. They had ice and firewood to purchase.”
          • Scenic views: Campers love the beautiful surroundings. One camper at Redbud Campground at Bell Smith Springs said, “It was a great spot. Very quiet and peaceful.”

          What you should know:

          • Limited amenities: Some campgrounds, like Redbud Campground at Bell Smith Springs, do not have drinking water or electric hookups. A visitor mentioned, “There is no potable water on site. That would be my only complaint.”
          • Busy weekends: Popular spots can get crowded on weekends. A camper at Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground advised, “Recommend only visiting Monday thru Thursday.”
          • Road conditions: Some campgrounds have rough access roads. A visitor to Jackson Falls noted, “The road to get into the primitive camp area is long, and just a little bumpy but we had no problem in a 4x4.”

          Tips for camping with families:

          • Choose family-friendly sites: Look for campgrounds with playgrounds and activities. At Harmonie State Park Campground, a reviewer said, “In addition to the campground with at least 2 playgrounds, there are trails, picnic areas and a boat ramp.”
          • Plan for busy times: If you want a quieter experience, avoid weekends. A camper at Shawnee Forest Campground mentioned, “Very busy on Fridays and weekends.”
          • Pack snacks and drinks: Since some campgrounds lack amenities, it’s good to bring your own food and drinks. A visitor at Pine Ridge noted, “The toilets were very clean for vault toilets.”

          Tips from RVers:

          • Check site levels: Not all sites are level, so it’s wise to ask about the best spots. A camper at Harmonie State Park Campground advised, “Suggest calling before making reservations because many of electric sites are not level.”
          • Bring extra water: Some campgrounds, like Redbud Campground at Bell Smith Springs, do not have water hookups. A visitor mentioned, “We had to hop back in the car and drive 14 miles each way to stock up.”
          • Use online reservations: Many campgrounds allow you to book online, which can save time. A camper at Gun Creek said, “Book online at Recreation.Gov.”
