COE Rend Lake North Sandusky Recreation Area

    Great fishing camp

North Sandusky Campground has 60 reservable campsites. All campsites have electric hookups, 16 campsites are full-hookup., 30 & 50 amp. There is a dump station, hot showers and flush toilets. Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

    Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground

    Quiet camping convenient to I-57

Wayne Fitzgerald State Park is on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois. It’s a great place for camping, fishing and bikes. It’s convenient for a short stop if you are traveling through, or as a destination. Although it’s right off the interstate there is no traffic noise. The campground has 40 tent sites and over 240 modern campsites, which offer electrical hookups, water and sewer facilities. Modern sites are $20/night, with 30/50 amp service. Primitive sites are $6. There is no internet. There are a few pull through sites.. there is lots of room and the sites appear to be level. There are 3 shower buildings. Many sites can be reserved online. There is a playground, and boat ramp. The park has hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking and boating. there is a golf course nearby and a lodge. Rend Lake is well-known for crappie, particularly in the early spring, as well as largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.

    Burdette Park

    Nice little sute

Burdette Park is on the west side of Evansville. Really nice park! Currently we are full timing there. They have maybe 24 full huck up spots and about 10 or so w/o sewer. 30/50 amp electric on all. All pads are drive through and very level. They don't have much going on in winter but summertime is great. Pool, trails, BMX racing on Friday nights and tons of shelters for your get-togethers! Wonderful camp managers!

    Timber Ridge Outpost & Cabins

    Not bad

Paid $35 per night for 2 nights after our Passport America discount. Not sure it would have been worth the full price. Full hookups. 50amp, water (55psi), and sewer. Cell coverage for AT&T and Verizon were both adequate to stream and work. The check-in process was a bit slow. We kinda expected that since it took us a dozen calls just to get someone to pick up the phone to make a reservation. We were first in line at check-in and spent at least 10 minutes going over all sorts of rules and information. Luckily we showed up at 3:05pm because they charge $25 for "early check-in" any time before 3pm. We're full-time RVers and have stayed at nearly 140 campgrounds and that's the first time we've seen something before 3pm called "early" and that's a pretty steep price for check-in. Our entire section of the campground was empty. Our neighbors actually showed up at 2pm and opted to wait an hour in the parking lot to go to their un-occupied site rather than paying $25. But besides the check-in, the campground was beautiful. Plenty of tree cover. The roads are paved and easy to navigate. Many of the amenities are closed for covid but there were still people riding around on their bikes. Definitely a bike-centric park with trails and bike paths around. It's not located next door to Traverse City but it's not far to get to most things. We camped at Timber Ridge Campground & Recreation Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We come here often. $25.00/night.

    Shawnee Forest Campground

    EV Car Camping

I’m a novice car camper, sleeping in my Tesla Model 3. This campground is quiet and clean. The host is very friendly and knowledgeable. Each site has 50 amp electric service (so you can charge your EV with a NEMA 14-50 plug), fresh water, fire pits, and picnic tables. A nice stop to visit the Shawnee National Forest.

    South Sandusky Campground

    5 Star COE

Using your GPS of choice, you can reach this campground off I-57 via Benton or the IL-154/Sesser exit. The area includes both North Sandusky and South Sandusky COE campgrounds, clearly marked and easy to find. We arrived around 2:00 PM and found the check-in gate closed, but since we had a reservation, we proceeded directly to our back-in site 123 with full hookups. Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section. Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad. There’s one full hookup pull-through site in the Dogwood loop—a long, slightly curved pad with sewer and power connections on the yard side, and water on the standard side. Both North and South Sandusky COE campgrounds offer a wide variety of site types, including lake views, varying utility setups, and well-spaced sites. Paved bike trails run throughout the area. We've been coming here for years, and this campground remains one of our favorites close to home.

McLeansboro, Illinois sits at approximately 466 feet above sea level in Wayne County amid rolling farmlands and wooded areas. The region experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and mild winters with occasional snowfall. Most campgrounds near McLeansboro remain open from March through November, with limited winter camping options at select locations.

What to do

Fishing at Rend Lake: Gun Creek Campground provides direct lake access with multiple waterfront sites for fishing enthusiasts. "Nice, large, well thought out campground. Lots of trees, paved sites, bathrooms, showers, and well maintained," notes one visitor to Gun Creek.

Biking on paved trails: South Sandusky Campground connects to an extensive network of paved bike paths circling Rend Lake. "Paved bike trails run throughout the area. We've been coming here for years, and this campground remains one of our favorites close to home," according to a recent camper at South Sandusky.

Hiking at Garden of the Gods: Located approximately 45 minutes southeast of McLeansboro, this recreation area offers unique sandstone formations and hiking trails. "The rock formations are surreal and shoulder season is so quiet! We will be back as the hiking is awesome," shares one visitor at Garden of the Gods.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Marion Campground & RV Park maintains well-kept shower facilities that campers appreciate. "This campground is laid out very well. The showers/bathrooms are perfectly designed down to a shelf in the shower," reports one visitor to Marion Campground.

Water access: Campers value the lakefront sites at South Sandusky. "We love tent camping at South Sandusky. Many of the sites are right on the lake and the sunrise and sunsets are always gorgeous. They have quiet hours from 10-6 and the bathrooms and showers are always really clean."

Pet amenities: Archway RV Park offers dedicated space for dogs. "Friendly & clean. Nice people and cute! Stores nearby. There is a nice doggie park area fenced off too," notes a visitor to Archway RV Park.

What you should know

Noise considerations: Several campgrounds in the area experience highway or train noise. "This is a stop-over type of campground. The sites are very close together with no privacy. It is right next to interstate 57, so unless you're inside your camper, you'll definitely be listening to the highway," cautions a camper at Marion Campground.

Site grading varies: Pay attention to site selection when booking. "Some spots do have a fairly good slope to them," warns a visitor at Gun Creek. "Overall a great stay, very busy as it was full the entire time we were there. Absolutely must check how level the spots are before you book, as lots of sites are over 4 inch incline."

Seasonal popularity: Warmer months bring increased camping traffic. "South Sandusky is a Corps of Engineers Campground on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois. There are 8 tent sites & 119 sites with electric and full hook-ups. Sites can be reserved on the Internet at www.recreation.gov."

Tips for camping with families

Beach access: South Sandusky Campground features a swimming beach near camping areas. "We love the large beach. The campsites have a nice set up and are a decent size. The kids loved the playground. There were kids everywhere and everyone was very friendly! Fun spot!"

Playground facilities: Garden of the Gods offers outdoor recreation beyond just hiking. "Great for a day trip or extended stay while exploring the lands between the mighty rivers. Very clean, and well maintained. The bathrooms are on close proximity to the sites."

Poison ivy awareness: When hiking with children, watch for poison ivy along trails. "We camped in the backcountry along the River to River trail adjacent to Garden of the Gods. The camping area we found was great, about 7 miles down the River to River trail, but there was poison ivy everywhere along the trail which made for a stressful hike."

Tips from RVers

Easy interstate access: RV camping near McLeansboro, Illinois often means convenient highway proximity. "Very convenient off the interstate, but also noisy due to the interstate being right there. Small park, quite a few permanent residents. This was a simple stop over for us, but it served the purpose," shares a visitor to Benton KOA.

Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds offer complete services. "Full hookups to tent camping and spacious sites. This is a Corps of Engineer Campground so bring your America the Beautiful pass! Well maintained on beautiful Rend Lake in southern Illinois."

Site arrangement: Pay attention to site layout when booking. "We travel between Charleston, SC and Omaha, NE several times a year and always stay here on return trip. Long first day drive, but so handy and staff couldn't be more accommodating to our late arrivals. Just far enough from Interstate so noise isn't an issue."
