McCully Heritage Project's dog-friendly campsites provide a peaceful retreat with free firewood and several fishing access points. Primitive tent camping, RV sites, and cabins accommodate different camping styles, all welcoming pets with minimal restrictions. The campground maintains several hiking trails where leashed dogs can explore alongside their owners. While sites are relatively inexpensive at $10 per night, campers should be prepared for wildlife encounters as visitors frequently note friendly neighbors' dogs and cats roaming through the area. Several campsites feature large open spaces that comfortably accommodate multiple tents and provide ample room for dogs to relax on leashes under the shade trees. Campground data and reviews near Kampsville, Illinois is regularly updated on The Dyrt.

Silo Access Area offers free riverfront camping for pets and owners on the Mississippi River, with 13 spacious sites suitable for RVs and travel trailers. Dogs enjoy the expansive gravel bar areas with river access, though owners should prepare for train noise as tracks run nearby. The campground lacks amenities such as water, electrical hookups or bathroom facilities, requiring campers to be self-contained. Pere Marquette State Park Campground provides a more developed alternative with electric sites, shared water access, and clean shower facilities where pets are welcome. Recent improvements to the park include new 50 amp service at some sites. Hikers with dogs particularly appreciate the park's extensive trail system and river views, though campers should pack additional water hoses as shared water sources sometimes require extended connections.

      Convenient to St. Charles

Easy off I-370, campground is new and large. It is on a lake with bike trails, kayak rental, and kids splash pad. Staff were helpful. I received about 5 pieces of paper when checking in. You need a code to get into the dog park. Shopping nearby. Used this as a base to visit historic St Charles.

      St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

      Really nice overnight stay

We spent one night here (May 11, 2022). This is a very nice easy access CG with wide, spacious, and level pull through and back-in gravel sites (25 paved). There are a lot of activities available: archery, boating, fishing, dog park, biking (wish I brought my mtn bike), walking, playground, horseshoes and volleyball. We did not have time to visit the clubhouse and did not make use of the bathrooms or showers. It is a great base camp to visit the area. The WiFi was great as was cell phone reception. We would definitely stay here again.

      A nice getaway

A friend discovered this gem a while back and we now frequent it. Super inexpensive for the space that you get. Free firewood. We have only stayed at the largest site as it has good fishing and a place for us to launch our paddleboards and kayaks. We easily fit a dozen people over the 4th of July. Nice hiking trails near. Watch for ticks. Don’t be alarmed if you see cats or the neighbors dogs roaming around the site. They are friendly.

      Helpful friendly hosts

Stayed at overnight. The host couple is very friendly and helpful. Place was clean. Sites were pretty level and shaded. Host helped us with ladder and broom for the stuff that fell off the trees. Cute pool but didn’t use it. Laundry worked good. Pizza was good. Pet runs clean and in good shape. Good air signal for tv.

    Guide to Kampsville

Camping sites near Kampsville, Illinois cluster along the Illinois River valley at elevations of 400-600 feet, with the region characterized by rolling wooded hills and riverside floodplains. Seasonal flooding affects campsite availability in spring months, particularly at low-lying areas. Most campgrounds maintain open status April through October when temperatures typically range from 50-85°F.

    What to do

Hiking with dogs: Pere Marquette State Park Campground offers extensive trail systems where leashed pets can accompany owners. "Pere Marquette has many options for your stay... the hiking is worth the effort. The views from the bluffs are gorgeous," shares Shawn M. The park maintains several difficulty levels suitable for different hiking abilities.

Fishing access: Multiple access points exist around Kampsville area lakes and rivers. At Pittsfield City Lake, campers appreciate the easy fishing opportunities. "Real nice campground with bathrooms and showers. Only $5 to tent camp here! Great view of the lake and easy to hike trails," according to Whiskey B. Remember that Illinois fishing licenses are required.

River watching: Silo Access Area - O'Neil Creek provides direct Mississippi River access where visitors can observe commercial river traffic. "This site is a great place to watch that amazing river pass by. You sit and watch the barges and various things float by," reports Jill. The riverfront location offers unobstructed views of passing vessels.

    What campers like

Affordable camping options: Many local sites maintain reasonable rates. At McCully Heritage Project, one camper notes, "Ten dollars a night helps maintain land and natural area, all donation, very family oriented." The site offers value while supporting conservation efforts.

Wildlife viewing: Naturalists appreciate the diverse wildlife throughout the region. Cuivre River State Park Campground provides habitats supporting various species. "Campground is beautiful and very woodsy. We saw bunnies hopping around and when we first arrived to our site a deer was grazing nearby, such a bonus!" Maria E. reports. Morning and evening hours typically offer best wildlife spotting opportunities.

Spacious camping areas: Sites often provide ample room for setup. "We easily fit a dozen people over the 4th of July. Nice hiking trails near. Watch for ticks," notes Eric about McCully Heritage Project. Many campgrounds maintain distance between sites, allowing for privacy despite busy weekends.

    What you should know

Weather considerations: The area experiences significant seasonal variations. "We were checking out right before a weekend. Our site, previously not available that weekend, had opened up. The staff called to tell us that the site had opened up over the weekend and wanted to check with us before giving it to someone else," mentions Mats about St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park, highlighting how weather affects availability.

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience nearby rail traffic. At Silo Access Area, "You won't miss the train as it comes by 3-4 times a day. And lots of barges and river boats that are fun to watch," according to Matthew H. Noise-sensitive campers should select sites farther from tracks when possible.

Pet policies: Dog friendly campgrounds near Kampsville typically require leashes. "The campground has a large boat ramp. The area is freshly paved and undergoing reforestation. However, there are a lot of trees," notes Cyndy & Selena R. about Silo Access Area, where pets can explore designated areas with proper restraint.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several facilities maintain play areas for children. Leo S. shares about McCully Heritage Project: "I just love the bridge across the pond. We had a picnic and the kids got to play on the playground equipment." Most playgrounds remain open during daylight hours.

Educational opportunities: Local natural areas provide learning experiences. At Cuivre River State Park Campground, "This park has plenty of well groomed trails and facilities spread out nicely. You could camp here for a weekend and stay busy," according to Tony M. Rangers sometimes offer guided nature walks during summer months.

Safety considerations: Family campers should prepare for specific local conditions. "There was some rough springtime weather expected one day. A park ranger went around to every site and notified every camper of where the shelters were and gave out a flyer about the specific weather forecast!" reports Mats about St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park. Weather alerts remain important throughout camping season.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: RV sites vary in service levels throughout the Kampsville region. "Very impressed with this beautiful location. The site is right on the Mississippi River! There are 13 sites for RVs and Travel Trailers. Three sites are curved to pull in and out easily. Site 13 is large enough for 2 RVs," notes Cyndy & Selena R. about pet-friendly camping options at Silo Access Area.

Site leveling: Some campgrounds require additional preparation. "We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 33 for just 1 night in late June... The electric and water hookups on some sites, at least ours, was at the back and on the wrong side," explains Ray & Terri F. about Pittsfield City Lake. Many RVers recommend bringing leveling blocks.

Seasonal considerations: Access conditions change throughout the year. "South loop was crowded, but few people in the north loop in October. Bathrooms weren't the cleanest, but flushing toilets and showers available. Paid $15 for full service spot. Cash only payment," Reishelle H. reports about Pittsfield City Lake, demonstrating how timing affects camping experience.
