Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning views of Diamond Head, and relaxed way of life. But one thing that is often overlooked by visitors (and really shouldn’t be!) is the amazing experience of camping in Hawaii.


The Hawaiian Islands are made up of eight main islands, including Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Kauai and Niihau. Each one offers unique camping experiences and different activities.


Oahu, home to the city of Honolulu, and the most populated island, offers a unique blend of city comforts and tropical vibes. The southernmost coast is where you’ll find popular tourist destinations like Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach, and Hanauma Bay. Due to the number of people that live on this part of the island, there are limited camping areas, but just a short drive makes a big difference.


On Oahu’s Windward coast, expect stunning views of the Ko’olau mountains and the turquoise waters of Lanikai and Kailua. Bellows is a great camping spot right on the beach away from the bustle of Honolulu, and only a few minutes drive from the popular Maunawili hike trailhead. Permits are required to go camping in Hawaii, and sites usually book up in advance, so be sure to call a few weeks ahead if you want to get a spot.


If relaxing in nature and getting away from the crowd is what you’re after, Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area, located inland near Aiea, provides visitors with lush forest views, and is the site of a former temple of Hawaiian healing. It is also near the trailhead for the Aiea Loop Trail, a popular 4.5 mile hike with stunning mountain vistas, and is just a short drive away from Pearl Harbor.


The Big Island, the largest of the Hawaiian islands and known for its diverse landscape and constantly flowing lava, is another great option if you are looking to do some camping in Hawaii. Camping permits are available for Punalu’u, Hawaii’s famous black sand beach, which has a reputation for great snorkeling and fishing and for sea turtle sightings. You can also snag one of 16 campsites in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Sites are available on a first come, first served basis, and although it’s a little more rustic (there are restrooms but no showers), it’s probably worth it to be able to camp at “one of the most unique campsites to visit in the world”.

- WITHIN 5-10 MINS: Ocean cliffs, public labyrinth, Pahoa Town, grocery stores, restaurants, food delivery options and a 24 hour 7-11 is available 15 minutes away from the farm. 
- WITHIN 25-60 MINS: Hilo Town, Pohoiki Hot Ponds, Lava Tree State Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kehena Black Sand Beach, Kalapana, hikes and caves are all within 30 minutes. Keaukaha (numerous beach parks, ocean ponds and swimmable tidepools about 35 minutes).
- WITHIN 1.5-3HRS: Green Sand Beach and South Point are approx. 2.5 hours. Mauna Kea Mauna Loa 1.5 hrs., and Kona 2.5 hours.

This spot in Puna is a great location and it's a half hour from the property to the Hilo Airport. There is a small downtown in Pahoa Town with most things you should need just minutes down the road and anything else you may want including most "big box" stores within 30 minutes in Hilo.

There is a community association that has a park and pool that we can give you access to upon request.

Pitch your tent on a beautiful 25 acre farm located on the Big Island of Hawaii.   We are located on the slope of Mauna Loa between Hilo and Volcano National Park in a town called Mountain View.  The 1500 foot elevation offers a lush, cool climate and a nice ocean view.   Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are visible on clear days.  The Bathhouse has electricity. Suitable for phone charging only. No rice cookers, coffee pots, hair dryers, etc. A shower and toilet are available.   Wifi is available.   Enjoy the banana’s, citrus, jaboticaba and various other fruits when in season.   We have fish ponds with tilapia, catfish and bull frogs!  Cows and sheep in the pasture.  Six tame feral pigs and plenty wild ones in the pasture. Children love playing on the farm and fishing in the ponds. They are guaranteed to catch with bamboo poles or net.  We also have frisbee golf and tether ball.   Drive to the quaint town of Hilo or Volcano Village both about 15 miles in either direction of the farm.   Volcano National Park offers great hiking trails and at the moment an active volcano with excellent night or early morning viewing.  If hiking is not to your liking, just relax on the farm.

Social distancing, sanitizing, and mask wearing is required on Arnott’s Lodge property.
Remember, Hilo is the wettest part of the island! You will want a rain fly.

The camping area is a quiet zone after 10:00pm.  No music or cellphone use.  If you need to take a call, we have a separate guest area or TV lounge where you can talk on the phone. Loud snorers may have to rent out a room.

We will provide you with a camp space, shower, and toilet facilities.  Everything else needs to be provided by the camper.  We do not lend tools to assist with setting up your tent, nor do we rent out beddings, linens, or cooking supplies. You may purchase a clean towel for $5.00. We also do not provide free storage for your luggage and personal effects. Treat this as any other camping spot on the island and be conscious of your belongings.

Tents must be moved after 3 nights to preserve the lawn; larger tents after two nights.

7 nights maximum stay limit.  Management’s approval is needed for any extension.

Arnotts Lodge and Hiking Adventures

Keauhou is located on the southern seacoast of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park and is one of the favored destinations of hearty wilderness hikers. The campsite is 7.6 miles from the closest trailhead. The hike to Keauhou can be a grueling, hot hike through predominately non-native grasses to a small rocky bay where cold fresh water seeps to the surface and mixes with the ocean. Permitted campers may stay a maximum of 3 consecutive nights per site. A total of 16 hikers are allowed per night at Keauhou.

The campsite may be accessed from several trailheads;

Mau Loa o Maunaulu via the Keauhou Trail - 7.6 miles (accessed via Chain of Craters Road).
Puʻuloa via the Puna Coast Trail - 9.7 miles (accessed via Chain of Craters Road).
Hilina Pali Overlook (10+miles - not recommended)
