Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, located near Pine Mountain, features pet-friendly cabins in addition to tent and RV sites. The park's extensive trail system accommodates dogs on leashes. Gates at R. Shaefer Heard Campground lock at 10:00 PM sharp, so evening dog walks must be completed before then. Red clay at the lake bottom creates squishy footing—something to consider when letting dogs enter the water.

      Pine Mountain Camp Ground

Well maintained roads. Large sites with choice of full sun or shade site.

Staff is great and his campground allows campfires. Pet friendly with two dog parks. Great pool and has cabins and yurts to reserve. Less than three miles from Callaway Gardens and FDR Park. Town of Pine Mountain...two street lights...very quaint sidewalk shops! This place is a hidden treasure.

      Great Location for Birding

If you’re into birding, this is a great spot. The campground is located on West Point Lake, where bald eagles soar. There are also two parks very close by that are for ideal bird watchng, even in the winter, where a variety of migratory species congregate! Here is a link to the lake's birding page.

Campsites on the water’s edge provides easy access for swimming, fishing and kayaking, but camping in the fall on the hill with a deck overlooking the lake provides beautiful views of the lake.

I gave it a 4-star rating instead of 5 because the restrooms could use a good cleaning and updating.

      Nice COE

The campground(CG) is fairly easy to get to as you follow the signs to West Point, Lake. Our RV GPS and Waze took us right to the West Point Project sign(per reservation email) that showed R. Shaefer Heard CG. Check-in at the gate was quick, and we proceeded to back-in site 106 with water and electric(50/30/20 AMP). The site entrance is lined with railroad ties, so we had to be precise with our backing. However, the road turns at the site, so you get a straight shot to back in. The reservation website states that the site is limited to a 30’ RV. We had zero problems fitting in, leveling, and parking our 39’ 5th wheel and F450. Site 106 is on the end of a row, so it has plenty of privacy, plus right on the lake. As with most COEs, the water pressure is very good, so we used a reducer. We got 2 bars on Verizon. There’s a clear shot south for satellite, and we were able to get a shot north through mature trees for Starlink. Our site was right on the water and would be an easy launch for a kayak. As we were here in early January, we pretty much had the loop to ourselves. The last time we were here was during warmer weather a couple of years ago, and this CG was pretty much full. We enjoyed walking our dogs along the CG roads. We enjoyed our two-day stay.

      Pyne Road Park Campground

      Lakeside Camping

This is a 458-acre wooded park on West Point Lake. There are 37 campsites, some primitive and some with electricity and water, with some site on the water's edge. There is a very large boat ramp and dock, as well as two baseball fields, a multi-use ball field, and pavilions.

      Great Lakeside Camping

This park is located on the southern end of West Point lake near the town of West Point, GA. This is a wonderful park with 117 sites all located water front or water view, the sites are equipped with water, 30 or 50 amp electrical, table and fire ring. For this trip we stayed in site 115 which was level and paved, there was also a concrete pad with picnic table and an additional dirt and gravel tent pad area. We brought a canoe which was launched direct from our site which made this very convenient for morning and evening paddle trips. We also had bicycles, the park has good paved roads that are great for low impact bike riding.

There was good over the air TV reception as well as Verizon cell service and LTE data coverage. There’s ample shopping for supplies within 3.5 miles of the park in the towns of West Point and LaGrange.

The only negative for this park is the bathroom. There are two bath houses provided and several toilet only facilities, all are functional but in need of renovation. As as others have said, the park gates lock at 10:00 PM and there is no gate code to allow access after hours.

This is a great COE park with sites that provide views seldom found, we stayed here in a 20’ travel trailer.

      Go-to Campsite

Great for spring/summer camping, kind camp hosts, and great fun paddleboarding and jetskiing on Lake West Point. My family’s go-to spot!

    Guide to West Point

    R. Shaefer Heard Campground features 117 waterfront or water-view sites within the 26,000-acre West Point Lake system. What to do

Fishing from your campsite: Many sites at Amity Campground offer direct water access. "Deep water camp sites... you won't be disappointed," notes Rodney G. The campground provides "nice, quiet campground. Great views of the lake from most sites."

Bird watching on established trails: The Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail runs through several campgrounds. At Amity, "a nature trail within the campground leads to a marsh where there are duck, owl, and bluebird nest boxes. There are two long boardwalks where you can walk over the marsh."

Kayak in secluded coves: Launch directly from waterfront sites. "We were able to launch our kayaks right from our campsite and saw several others launch boats from theirs," reports Kara at Holiday Campground. Jamie H. adds, "it is never over crowded and its numerous coves make for pretty safe swimming and shoreline fishing."

    What campers like

Private camping areas: Sites at R. Shaefer Heard Campground offer seclusion. "If you value privacy, you'll love the layout: each site is tucked deep into the woods, with excellent space and seclusion," says Denis P. Another camper mentions, "Our site was in a cove with limited views of the lake."

Tent-friendly waterfront options: Several campgrounds accommodate tent campers with lake access. "We had spot 96 and we tent camped. The spot was wonderful. Right beside the water so the kids were able to play in the water most of the time," shares Justin W. about R. Shaefer Heard.

Late checkout policies: Some campgrounds offer extended departure times. Dianna B. appreciates that "Late checkout (3pm) was so nice" at R. Shaefer Heard Campground, allowing for a full final day of activities before packing up.

    What you should know

Gate closure times: R. Shaefer Heard enforces strict gate rules. "The gate is locked shut from 10 PM to 8 AM, no exceptions unless the elderly host personally deems your emergency worthy," cautions Denis P.

Seasonal water levels: Water access can change throughout the year. "The lake is down right now because they are repairing the dam so it was fun to walk along the banks," reports SJ W. at R. Shaefer Heard.

Variable bathroom facilities: Campground bathhouses vary in quality. At Franklin D Roosevelt State Park, "bathrooms are all spotless and each area has a camp host constantly cleaning," while other campgrounds have more basic facilities.

    Tips for camping with families

Recreation centers with children's activities: Some nearby facilities offer entertainment options. "This small off the beaten path campgrounds has lots to offer for kids with a water park and skating rink attached to the property you don't even have to leave," says Rodney G. about Three Creeks Campground.

Kid-friendly programming: Some parks offer structured activities. Joshua H. at Franklin D Roosevelt State Park mentions, "They have a lot of stuff to do there. We fished and swam, they also had a scavenger hunt that you kids loved doing."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for big rigs: Not all sites accommodate larger vehicles. Ward explains at R. Shaefer Heard Campground: "Reserved out spot long in advance to get a spot on the lake, please do like all campgrounds all sites are not created equal. Most all are concrete pads and level but if your camper is over 25' or so length may cause a problem."

Power considerations: Some campgrounds have limited electrical capacity. At Pine Mountain RV Resort, "30 amp circuit was not adequate. The breaker continually tripped while using small kitchen appliances."

Pet-friendly amenities: For pet-friendly camping near West Point, Georgia, site layout matters. Liz H. appreciates Franklin D Roosevelt State Park: "Site 213 and 214. Beautiful wooded site lots of space between sites in this loop... with lots of room for our dogs." The concrete picnic tables and fire rings provide defined spaces for pets and owners.
