Waverly Hall sits at the southern edge of Pine Mountain, with elevations ranging from 750 to 1,395 feet. The region's mixed pine and hardwood forests create varied camping terrain across Harris County, Georgia. Summer temperatures often reach 90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions with nighttime temperatures that can drop below 50°F.
What to do
Trail exploration: Franklin D Roosevelt State Park Campground offers extensive hiking opportunities through 23 miles of maintained trails. "Very clean and shady sights, being upgraded this year. Many trails a lake and history," writes Carol L. The park's connected trail system accommodates both novice and experienced hikers.
Water recreation: Sprewell Bluff Park provides multiple ways to enjoy the Flint River. "The picnic and general visitors area by the river was busy when we arrived but we still had plenty of area to explore. The trail was not being used, everyone was in the water or at the pavilion," notes Shelly S. The park's recreational area includes swimming spots and flat-water paddling zones.
Historical sites: The region contains significant FDR-related landmarks within short driving distance of most campgrounds. "First time I came here, I was about 12 years old. I returned when I bought my first camper at 34 years old and wanted to test it out for the first time," shares Katie A. about visiting Franklin D Roosevelt State Park. Local museums and historic sites provide context about the area's New Deal history.
What campers like
Lakefront sites: R. Shaefer Heard Campground offers premium waterfront camping. "We had spot 96 and we tent camped. The spot was recommended in another review and it was wonderful. Right beside the water so the kids were able to play in the water most of the time," says Justin W. These sites allow direct water access for swimming and paddling.
Large, private sites: Many campgrounds in the region feature spacious sites with good separation. "Lake sites are huge and well spaced out with plenty of shade and privacy," notes a Shaefer Heard camper. This contrasts with interior sites that tend to have less privacy.
Clean facilities: Blanton Creek Campground maintains high cleanliness standards. "The bathhouse is heated and has five toilet stalls and four nicely tiled showers with benches," reports Fran H. Most established campgrounds in the area provide hot showers and regularly maintained restrooms.
What you should know
Gate restrictions: Several campgrounds enforce strict entrance/exit policies. At R. Shaefer Heard, "the gate is locked shut from 10 PM to 8 AM, no exceptions unless the elderly host personally deems your emergency worthy," according to Denis P. Check gate hours before booking if you plan evening arrivals or early departures.
Site selection considerations: Not all sites accommodate larger RVs. "Some spots have a driveway that goes downhill from the camper and others go uphill from the camper which might be an issue for 5th wheels," warns Stacy H. about Blanton Creek. Study site maps and reviews before booking.
Wildlife encounters: Expect regular wildlife visits at your campsite. "Wildlife is busy here— armadillos, raccoons, and rabbits all feel quite at home on your tent pad," notes Denis P. about camping at R. Shaefer Heard. Store food securely, especially in tent sites.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Pine Mountain RV Resort offers dedicated children's areas. "The campground is very clean and has a great pool area. The pool area has a kids pool and hot tub along with the regular inground pool," shares Aaron C. Several campgrounds feature playgrounds and open areas for activities.
Bike-friendly campgrounds: Many local campgrounds have paved roads suitable for children's bikes. "We camped in campground 5 and from where our site was we could see the playground and also let our kids ride there bikes around the circle that the camp sites where on," says Joshua H. about Franklin D Roosevelt State Park.
Scavenger hunts: Some campgrounds offer organized activities for children. "My four kids and I had a blast at FDR state park. They have a lot of stuff to do there. We fished and swam, they also had a scavenger hunt that you kids loved doing," reports Joshua H. Check with campground offices for current activities upon arrival.
Tips from RVers
Hookup reliability: Pine Mountain Camp Ground provides reliable services for RVers. "Staff is great and his campground allows campfires. Pet friendly with two dog parks. Great pool and has cabins and yurts to reserve," notes Donna B. Several dog-friendly campgrounds near Waverly Hall offer full hookup sites.
Seasonal considerations: Summer heat affects electrical systems. "30 amp circuit was not adequate. The breaker continually tripped while using small kitchen appliances," reports Brittany about Pine Mountain RV Resort. Consider booking sites with 50-amp service during summer months when air conditioning may be necessary.
Leveling challenges: Some campgrounds feature uneven sites. "The RV sites near the pool are concrete pads and well spaced out. The sites below the pool area are a little tighter and un-level," warns Brittany about Pine Mountain RV Resort. Bring additional leveling blocks, especially for larger rigs.
