    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The mountainous terrain near Eton, Georgia provides multiple camping areas within the Cohutta Wildlife Management Area and surrounding state parks. Fort Mountain State Park, located approximately 10 miles east of Eton, serves as the primary developed campground with 70 drive-in sites, platform camping, backcountry sites, and cabin accommodations. Both tent and RV camping options exist throughout the region, with Ball Field Dispersed Camping Area offering free, primitive camping opportunities. The mixed-use campgrounds cater to various preferences, from lakeside settings to forested mountain retreats.

Roads leading to many camping areas involve steep mountain ascents with twisting turns, particularly to Fort Mountain State Park. A camper noted, "I gave my transmission a work out climbing up the mountain to get here." Seasonal considerations affect camping experiences, with most campgrounds operating year-round while Lake Conasauga is available only from April through November. Wildlife encounters, particularly bears, are common throughout the area, requiring proper food storage and awareness. Cell service remains limited or non-existent at many campgrounds, with Fort Mountain State Park visitors reporting connectivity only at the trading post or completely absent within the campsites.

Lakefront sites consistently rank among the most popular camping locations in the region. Site 49 at Fort Mountain State Park receives particularly strong reviews for its proximity to both the lake and hiking trails. Several reviews highlight the park's diverse recreational offerings beyond camping. According to one visitor, "The park has a small lake with a beach and swimming area, kayak and aqua bike rentals, fishing, mountain bike trails, hiking trails, a mini golf course, playground, and picnic areas throughout." Platform camping sites, known locally as "Squirrel's Nests," provide a unique alternative to traditional tent camping but require campers to carry gear uphill from parking areas. Day-use areas in the parks become extremely crowded during summer weekends, making midweek visits preferable for those seeking quieter experiences.

      Fort Mountain State Park Campground

      Love this place

Beautiful views from the trails. I went during the summer in July so it was on the busier side. There is a lake with a beach with boat and paddle board rentals. Seemed like a great spot to fish. Prepare for possibilities of bears as they were around. One night I must have not fully secured my bear box and a bear found my cooler. I tent camped on a pad where I can find some service (T-Mobile) but most spots are spotty. Next time I come, I want to try the back country locations. Trails are awesome with a cool story about the place around the tower and fortification. Attendants at the camp store were really nice. If groceries are needed there is grocery stores in the nearest town of Chatsworth down the mountain

Deep Hole Recreation Area — Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest

      Peaceful Creekside Camping

      Our campsite: #9

⛺️ First site on the left. It’s a shaded, pull-through site, and I believe it’s the most private site in the campground. Only about half the sites were occupied during our visit, and it was incredibly peaceful and quiet.

⛺️ Very level and stayed dry with no puddling during our visit.

⛺️ The creek can be seen from the picnic table, and listening to the water was so relaxing. We even spotted a pileated woodpecker and a couple of herons across the creek.

⛺️ Direct creek access—it’s steep, but doable!

⛺️ The fire ring had quite a bit of ash left in it, although we didn’t need to use it.

⛺️ Farthest site from the fishing area and kayak launch, but it’s still an easy, short walk!

⛺️ Close to the restrooms, but we didn’t notice any unpleasant smells from our site or elsewhere in the campground.

⛺️ Trash cans are located along the way to the fishing area.

      Kayak Ramp & Fishing Area:

🛶 Concrete ramp makes creek access easy. It was muddy and slightly slippery during our visit, so watch your step!

🥾 The creek was cold and refreshing in August. Wear water shoes for grip on the smooth stones—and protection from any lost fishing hooks hiding on the creek bottom. Ouch!

🎣 The fishing area is next to the kayak ramp and has two wooden benches.

🦦 We saw an otter playing along the creek while we were fishing!

      Restrooms:

🚽 Bring a lantern or flashlight—even during the daytime, it’s DARK inside!

🚽 There are hooks to hang your lantern or bag.

🚽 No running water at the campground, so bring soap and water for washing your hands at your campsite.

🛒 Cooper’s Creek Store is nearby and worth a stop! Firewood, ice, bait, snacks, souvenirs, Wi-Fi, food, and plenty of fishing/camping essentials you may have forgotten.

🌲 If you’re looking for a quiet, shaded creekside site with privacy and easy water access, Site #9 is an excellent pick.

      Cloudland Canyon State Park Campground

Beautiful park with spacious sites and great hiking

We had a hard time finding our campsite in the West Rim Campground due to the construction at the entrance, but we made it to the temporary visitors center and they got us checked in and how to get to our campsite. It backs up to woods, nice space between sites. Ours is gravel and has water and electric, but there are full hookup sites available as well. We did the waterfall hike one day and the west rim loop the next. The waterfalls were beautiful, but a LOT of steps (600+ metal steps) !! I would definitely stay here again

      Big Creek Primitive Camping Area

      Nice, secluded spot

Nice spot next to a cool little creek. There was a good bit of trash in several of the fire rings, and found human waste and toilet paper about 5 feet from the waterline between a camp and the water, that was pretty disappointing. Leave no trace!! This includes hiking away from camp to bury your business. We still really enjoyed our stay. The road in was a little rougher than onX off-road let on, but had no issues getting in with my 4x4. Lots of wildlife, we even saw a bear a few minutes from camp.

    Guide to Eton

Camping in the Eton, Georgia area spans from established state parks to primitive sites within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Fort Mountain State Park Campground, located approximately 10 miles west of Eton, serves as the primary developed camping destination with RV sites, tent pads, cabins, and glamping options. Other notable options include Lake Conasauga Recreation Area, Doll Mountain Campground, and dispersed sites at Ball Field Dispersed Camping Area. The area provides a mix of water-focused camping at lakefront sites and more remote mountain settings within the Cohutta Wilderness.

Road access to many camping areas involves steep, winding mountain roads that can be challenging for larger vehicles. Fort Mountain State Park sits at an elevation of approximately 2,800 feet, offering cooler summer temperatures than surrounding lowlands. "Even though the roads were windy, they were doable with a truck and 28-foot trailer. The sites are nicely spaced and private," noted one camper about Fort Mountain. Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, with Lake Conasauga only open from April to November. Cell service remains limited or non-existent at most sites, particularly in more remote areas. Bear activity is common throughout the region, requiring proper food storage at all campgrounds.

The lakefront sites at Fort Mountain State Park receive consistently high ratings for their privacy and access to hiking trails. Campers frequently mention wildlife encounters, including black bears, as part of their experience. A review from Fort Mountain noted, "We had a pull-through site overlooking the lake. The setting is lovely and I'm sure it's a 'must-see' during the leaf-changing season as most of the forest is mature hardwoods." Several campgrounds offer water recreation, with Fort Mountain providing swimming areas, fishing, and paddleboat rentals during warmer months. Weekend visits typically see higher occupancy rates, especially during fall foliage season. The nearby towns of Chatsworth and Ellijay provide supply options, with several apple orchards located within 20-30 minutes of the camping areas.
