      Swords Dispersed Campsite

      Peaceful

I went solo camping and it was perfect. Quiet, peaceful, and clean. I drove down to the spot itself and I had misread a comment thinking I could drive my 2wd down to the spot itself. You can not without having trouble getting out. I almost had to call a tow truck for my Tahoe to get out. However, I was able to drive out eventually. Great spot for some peace while still having cell signal if you need. Would visit in the cool months though as August was far too hot.

      Fort Yargo State Park Campground

      Lakefront Overlook

We stayed at Site #45, and it quickly became one of our favorite campsites because it felt more like a wooded overlook, perched above the lake. The breeze coming off the water kept us comfortable enough to enjoy a campfire even on a hot August evening.

The site fit our 14x10 tent comfortably, but I wouldn’t recommend anything larger. There isn’t a true tent pad, and you’ll notice the slope while sleeping—but the view from inside the tent was priceless. We experienced a four-hour thunderstorm and didn’t have any standing water at our site afterward.

⚠️ The slope becomes much steeper near the shoreline, so I wouldn’t recommend this site for toddlers or anyone with mobility concerns.

🛝 Our 7-year-old loved fishing from the shoreline and thought the steep slope made the perfect slide to get back down to the water. Built-in slide + dirty shorts = happy camper. 😂

🔥 The site includes a clean fire ring with an adjustable cooking grate and a separate standing charcoal grill.

🦟 We didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes during our stay.

🚰 The shared water pump wasn’t working during our visit.

🚽 The bathhouse was spacious, clean, and only a short walk away.

🚗 A community wagon is parked near the bathhouse for campers to use when hauling gear between their vehicle and campsite. Loved that!

      A few tips:

🪵 The Visitor Center sells $6 bundles of firewood and has a nice selection of souvenirs.

🐜 Plenty of flies and large ants, so keep your food put away and your tent zipped.

🪲 Cicadas were loud at night. I loved it, but our 7-year-old slept with his wireless headphones on. If you’re a light sleeper, you may want to pack earplugs if you’re camping here June-August.

🎣 We caught more bluegill fishing from our campsite than we did from the fishing dock.

🌅 If you’re looking for one of the best views in the campground and don’t mind sleeping on a slight incline, Site #45 is well worth considering.

      1st visit

We were welcomed with the friendliest host. This campground is clean, quiet, and family friendly. Mr. Robert checked us in and helped us with extending our stay.

      Bolding Mill

      Site 27

This is our favorite lake Lanier campground. Our family loves to visit here a few times a year. I wish they would build the pier back and put some tlc into the bathrooms. Advice, don’t plan to arrive at closing. You’ll be greeted rudely by the gate house workers. I missed their call due to it being “potential spam” and well trying to get on the road. If you’re going to arrive after 6:30 call ahead bc I guess there’s not an after hours come through the gate and finish checking in the next day option. It’s 2026. Do you really need me to show ID and harass me for my tag number? This can all be uploaded online, right? Text? The check in for the army corp of engineer sites could use improvement. Then perhaps you wouldn’t have to employee as many people who are obviously unhappy with their job.

      Swords Dispersed Campsite

      Decent waterside spot

The road going in is dirt, but maintained well enough for a 2 wheel drive car to get to. If you have a 4 wheel drive that’s a little capable, you can drive down to the spot itself and park in your camp. If you park a car before the camp spot, it’s only like a 100 foot walk or something. The lake is pretty active, so you will have boats going back and forth out there. I think I only had 2 negative instances. The trash that was left behind was a little ridiculous, but I did clean it up and take it with me. There was also a bow fisherman patrolling the coast with all his lights on till like 2 am, which was a little annoying at first, but it’s all good.

      Talking Rock Motorcoach Resort

      Definitely 5 Stars!

Really nice newer RV park located in the mountains. They originally were a motorhome only resort, but since opened it up to towable units (still no tents). Many sites have great mountain views and the website has pictures of each site so you can decide what you want and how much you want to pay. They accept Passport America and give a 50% discount for up to a two-week stay which is why we stayed for two weeks. That discount made it a great place for a full hook-up RV resort with nice amenities. We loved the campground and the owners are super nice and helpful. Upon check-in, you get a nice welcome packet full of information about the local area and a loaf of homemade sourdough bread (which was delicious!!!!). Sites are basically a double site so where you park your camper and patio are both paved. They have “Solo” type firepits so you can move them wherever you want and not destroy the grass or pavement. Our site had two comfortable patio chairs and a picnic table.  Everything is paved so no dusty roads or dirty sites.  They allow you to wash your RV and car which was a big plus for us since they both needed it. The utilities worked well. There is a really nice swimming pool with lounge chairs and tables. The clubhouse is large and a great gathering place that offers free Nespresso coffee, snacks, and information. There are a couple of hiking trails on the property and they offer guided walks with staff. The nearby town of Talking Rock is really cute with restaurants, a brewery, shops, and a general store that sells a variety of items including firewood and pantry staples. We would definitely stay here again.

    Guide to Auburn

Water access remains a key consideration for campers exploring Auburn, Georgia campgrounds, with several options offering direct lake access. The area sits at around 1,000 feet elevation with surrounding hills providing scenic backdrops for camping locations. Most sites in the region feature different terrain characteristics, from heavily wooded areas to more open waterfront camping spots near Auburn, Georgia.

    What to do

Lake activities at Fort Yargo State Park: Visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, and paddling on the 260-acre lake. The park also features disc golf, putt-putt golf, and multiple playgrounds. "We loved the hiking. Most of the trails are mixed mountain biking and hiking but when we were there, we only saw two mountain bikes. We took a picnic lunch with us and found one of the many picnic areas to have lunch and enjoy the lake views," notes a visitor to Fort Yargo State Park Campground.

Hiking opportunities: Several campgrounds offer trail systems suitable for various skill levels. "Great campground, near shopping and restaurants. Great hiking trail around the lake. No FHU, but they do have grey water dumps in numerous places in campground," reports one camper about Fort Yargo State Park.

Wildlife viewing: Early morning and evening hours provide opportunities to observe local wildlife. At Shady Grove Campground, visitors note "Deer roaming everywhere. A new check in station with a store that's really really nice. Mountain bike trails and hiking trails inside park."

    What campers like

Level camping sites: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained, level sites available at area campgrounds. At Old Federal, one visitor notes, "This is without a doubt the nicest campground we've stayed at. Most spots are on the water. They also have nicely mowed grass and some trees. Campground is VERY clean. Nice level spots also."

Waterfront access: Direct water access ranks highly in camper preferences. "We were at spot #61 and the view and privacy was fantastic," reports a visitor to Shoal Creek Campground, adding "The beach area was lovely though and great fishing spots!"

Spacious sites: Campers frequently mention site spacing as a positive feature. At Shady Grove Campground, visitors appreciate the "very shaded sites with many being waterfront. We were in site 15, 14, and my parents used the Georgia glamping company in site 16."

    What you should know

Seasonal closures: Several campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Old Federal, for example, only operates from late March through October, while others like Fort Yargo remain open year-round.

Reservation requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially during summer months and weekends. "We visited in late April and could only find a campsite during the week. Despite Covid-19, the park was open for day-use and overnight guests," reports a Fort Yargo visitor.

Alcohol policies: Rules regarding alcohol consumption vary significantly between campgrounds. At Stone Mountain Park Campground, alcohol is permitted, while one visitor to Shady Grove Campground cautioned: "Nice campground. If you enjoy having a beer while camping don't come here. Beautiful day, beer in a solo cup playing cards with my wife at a picnic table. We were not making noise, nobody complained about us. Ranger pulls up and gave us both tickets."

Site conditions: Terrain and site layout vary considerably. "No shade whatsoever at 61 and ANTS, ants everywhere. They managed to get in our vehicle and they swarmed our toddlers car seats," notes one Shoal Creek camper.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated swimming areas ideal for children. At Don Carter State Park Campground, "There is a playground and a beach area" making it suitable for families with young children.

Playground facilities: Multiple campgrounds feature playground equipment. "We had an amazing visit!! All the staff were extremely helpful and sweet. Shower house was clean, laser show fabulous and while hiking we saw a lot of beautiful wildlife!!!" says a Stone Mountain Park visitor.

Off-peak timing: For quieter family experiences, consider mid-week camping. "We go camping every memorial day weekend and this year it was at Don Carter. We love this camp ground! Its fairly new, probably under 12 years, and everything is so clean and well taken care of," notes one family camper.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger rigs: Some campgrounds have restrictions or challenging sites for larger RVs. At Bolding Mill, "Long parking pad for RVs, tho' ours is a 17' travel trailer. Our site was near access to walk-in camping and a long walk to the bathroom."

Leveling challenges: Several campgrounds require equipment for leveling. "The only downfall was that the trailer needed a lot of leveling. But it was totally worth it. Our site was on the lake," notes a Stone Mountain Park visitor.

Dump station access: Most campgrounds offer dump stations rather than full hookups. "No FHU, but they do have grey water dumps in numerous places in campground," mentions a Fort Yargo visitor, while another camper notes that at Shady Grove the "Single dump station tends to line up on Sunday but I suppose that's part of the deal."
