The park maintains strict leash policies for all pets, with walking trails throughout the wooded property offering ample exercise opportunities for dogs and their owners. James Shackleford Memorial Park permits dogs throughout its established campground with picnic tables and fire rings. Multiple hiking paths near the campgrounds accommodate leashed dogs, with Fort Yargo featuring over seven miles of hiking trails and 12 miles of biking routes where pets can join their owners. The 260-acre lake at Fort Yargo allows shoreline access for pets though swimming restrictions apply in designated areas. Both parks feature peaceful, wooded settings with wildlife viewing opportunities, requiring pet owners to keep animals secured at all times. The campground's natural setting with numerous deer sightings means owners should be vigilant about keeping pets under control. North Shore Landing

      Gem of a place

Being next to railroad tracks it has a railroad motif you can actually stay in a renovated caboose. If that’s not your thing there’s plenty of tent sites, cabins, RVs, and RV sites just a few of the many amenities are the activity center, the swimming pool, beach access to Lake Oconee ,laundromat, and dog park. There’s also plenty of helpful stuff ready to drive you down to the pool or continually working on upkeep of the property very nice. We were just passing through but I have no problem staying here again. Wonderful place.

      Stone Mountain Park Campground

So close to me and I love it.

Lived in Georgia my whole life and yet my first time to Stone Mountain was literally three years ago. Now we have an annual pass and go all the time. This place is world renowned for its fireworks and laser show but you have to go off the pavement to truly fall in love with Stone Mountain! This place is great for everyone. I mean everyone, from free runners to hikers and all you folk that like to “camp” in your RVs. Visit this place anytime of year and you will not be disappointed. Apparently it’s rated #1 as the best place to camp in Georgia. I’m more into the nature only kind of camping but that’s not everyone’s cup a tea. Stone Mountain has something for everyone.

      North Shore Landing

      Beautiful Lake and Friendly People

Located on Lake Oconee, North Shore Landing is a KOA/TRA campground. There is a dock to fish from, and a boat launch if you want to go out. There's some very large catfish in the lake, 30+ lbs. There's also bass, blue gill and crappie. The campground is per friendly, full hook-up, with WiFi (pay for premium). There is a pool, clubhouse and 24 hour laundry that's $3 per load, w&d. There's a dog park, basketball and cornhole. Propane fill and dump station.

      Shady Grove Campground

      Great views

We are at spot 97 and was suppose to get 44. The host at the front office gave us a different spot that would be easier access to our 40ft 5th wheel. The view is fantastic. We brought 2 dogs which they enjoyed the scenery. They are firm on making sure pet owners have their leash on and do not free roam. A lot of deer just walking around. Bathrooms are in good shape. We plan on staying a week. No Wi-Fi so we are using hotspots on our cells. We have Verizon and showing 2 bar LTE.

      Fort Yargo State Park Campground

      Relaxation in The Woods

Fort Yargo is in the Winder Ga area and is close to Helen, Jefferson, Athens and Atlanta. Entering the campground is a nice paved road and leads to tent camping, cabins, yurts and RV sites.

Very clean park and has Historical area, playground, tennis court, bike and hike trails. Not to mention beach and boating area.

Picnics, camping, boating biking and camping or just day use areas. Pet friendly and all around great park.

There is a small general store, but you are so close to everything if you need it, it's there.

Gread for the Georgia Bulldog crowd as its less then 30 minutes!

      I recommend this park highly.

      Stone Mountain Park Campground

Awesome grounds with basic to full-hookups. Pet friendly.

Awesome grounds in a family and pet friendly atmosphere. Neighbors were kind and helpful. Very quiet and peaceful time. Walking the grounds was nice and hilly. There’s also trails in between areas and around the campground. If you like the water, bring your trunks, kayaks, and poles.

      Wesley Oaks RV Park

      Expensive + additonal fees

925 per month regardless of class size. 400 dollar security deposit plus a 50 dollar pet rent every month. Apartments charge less for security deposits+ pet rent (especially this high!) is something I’ve yet to hear of for an RV park. For a small 30 amp camper van, it’s just not justifiable to pay the same price as a big rig.

    Guide to Auburn

Fort Yargo State Park and nearby campgrounds offer extensive pet friendly options near Auburn, Georgia. The region sits at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with moderate temperatures during spring and fall camping seasons. Lake-based campgrounds remain popular year-round with water temperatures that stay warm enough for swimming from May through early October.

    What to do

Hiking with pets: Fort Yargo State Park Campground provides walking trails throughout its 1,816 acres. "Beautiful sites that are somewhat private. Lots to do close by in the day time (biking, hiking, fishing, swimming..)" notes Jessica D. Leashed dogs can join owners on most trails.

Water activities: Stone Mountain Park Campground offers lakeside recreation for families with pets. According to Susan K., "My husband and son enjoyed fishing and paddle boarding right behind our site." The lake provides cooling relief during summer months when temperatures frequently reach the high 80s.

Wildlife viewing: Deer sightings are common at campgrounds throughout the region. At Shady Grove Campground, "We tent camped for about a week, wildlife especially deer was abundant," reports Shea D. Keep pets leashed to prevent wildlife disturbances.

    What campers like

Lakefront sites: Many campers appreciate waterfront access for both themselves and their pets. At Bald Ridge Creek, "Nearly every site is on the Lake, with access to the water. The sites are very well maintained," according to Pam. The lake access points vary in steepness, so check site descriptions for pet-friendly water entry.

Well-maintained facilities: Clean bathrooms and shower facilities rank high among camper priorities. "The campground is very clean and checking process was smooth. We were able to get in before 3pm because our site was vacant," writes Liz H. about Duckett Mill.

Privacy between sites: Campers value space between neighbors when traveling with pets. "Sites are arranged in a way that you don't feel close to your neighbor. Free hot showers, firewood for $5/bundle, soda machines, dump station (sites have power and water)," notes Laura M. about Fort Yargo State Park Campground.

    What you should know

Alcohol policies: Regulations vary significantly between campgrounds near Auburn. "Ranger pulls up and gave us both tickets. We had a mandatory court appearance, turns out each ticket is $280.00. No warning," warns Rick B. about Shady Grove Campground's strict no-alcohol policy. Always check regulations before arrival.

Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, especially summer weekends, advance reservations are essential. "We visited in late April and could only find a campsite during the week. Despite Covid-19, the park was open for day-use and overnight guests," reports Nancy W. about Fort Yargo.

Site selection factors: When selecting sites with pets, consider proximity to trails and water. "If you're like me and appreciate a bit of privacy when camping, the walk-in campsites at Fort Yargo are the place to go. Just a short 1-2 minutes walk from your car and bathrooms, but you feel much more secluded than the campsites in the regular campground," suggests Amalia K.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Don Carter State Park Campground provides dedicated swimming areas. "We love that it's on the lake because family members have boats and its just easy to jump on at the campsite dock. There is also a beach for the kids to play at as well, very well kept," shares Cameron G.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature playground equipment for children. "Playground was close to site. Area was huge and well spaced between sites," mentions Shea D. about Shady Grove Campground, making it easier for families to monitor both children and pets.

Spacious sites: Look for campsites with adequate room for family activities and pet containment. "Our site had a nice big area with fire pit, picnic table, grill and room for a big tent. It also had a paved area down below where you can set up chairs with a great view of the water," describes Jennifer S. about Shady Grove.

    Tips from RVers

Leveling considerations: RVers should check site descriptions carefully. "We did not have trouble getting level in our site (#17). We enjoyed the beautiful spring weather which was sunny during the day and cool enough at night to have fires," shares Nancy W. about Fort Yargo State Park.

RV size limitations: Some campgrounds have restrictions or challenging access for larger rigs. "After parking our 40ft 5th wheel, we realized where we needed to turn around was going to be tight. We had a heck of a time getting the RV turned. It was so tight that the 5th wheel was only 1 inch from hitting the cab," warns Pam H. about Old Federal.

Full hookup availability: Hookups vary widely between campgrounds. "Grey water dumps in numerous places in campground. The staff was helpful. Our site was very level, and pull through," notes Judi P. about Fort Yargo State Park, an important consideration for extended RV stays with pets.
