Central Florida's campgrounds showcase year-round accessibility with average temperatures between 60-90°F depending on season. The region contains diverse ecosystems from pine forests to wetlands with elevations rarely exceeding 100 feet above sea level. Lake-based camping options typically offer water hookups and electric sites within 30 minutes of major urban attractions.
What to Do
Kayaking at Dixie Lake: Launch directly from campsites at Lake Louisa State Park Campground where paddlers can explore multiple connected waterways. "We were easily able to roll our Kayaks to Dixie lake from our campsite. We stayed at a site in Dixie loop sites 1-30. Hammond lake was across the road from our campground," notes one camper.
Biking on West Orange Trail: Access this 22-mile paved rail trail from downtown Winter Garden, about 3 miles from Winter Garden RV Resort. "Our favorite activity is biking to the trail head for the West Orange rails to trail which is located downtown @ 3 miles from campground. This rail to trail is 22 miles long and can be extended another 9 miles if you link to South Lake Trail."
Wildlife viewing: Look for native species at Wekiwa Springs State Park Campground where several hiking trails wind through natural habitats. "Really nice campground with all the amenities... Beautiful place love the springs!! Hoping to see some Florida native black bears fingers crossed..."
Swimming in natural springs: Cool off in crystal-clear waters maintaining a constant 72°F year-round. "The water was beautiful! The park is awesome. Really enjoyed the springs and kayaking," reports a visitor to Wekiwa Springs.
What Campers Like
Spacious waterfront sites: Trimble Park Campground offers lakeside camping with direct views. "This is a beautiful, small campground with 15 campsites most of which are waterfront. I stayed in site 11 that was positioned so I had a magnificent view of the lake and the little gator that lived at the waters edge."
Quiet camping near urban areas: Despite proximity to Orlando attractions, some parks maintain peaceful atmospheres. "This is a beautiful and well maintained county park. Several of the sites are right on the water, great walking trails + clean restrooms. The sites are super private, but the lake view makes it totally worth it!"
Dog-friendly facilities: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Killarney maintain dedicated exercise areas. At Orlando/Kissimmee KOA, "They even have a fenced in dog run and dog wash area. This is a beautiful KOA location and well maintained."
Clean bathroom facilities: Many campers appreciate well-maintained shower houses. "The bath houses are immaculate. There is bus service throughout the campground with bus and boat service to the Parks," reports a visitor to Disney's Fort Wilderness.
What You Should Know
Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially during winter months. "Book well in advance. We're staying at the family campground as the primitive was full, so word of advice, book well in advance."
Weekend congestion: State parks with swimming areas reach capacity early on weekends. "If you go on a weekend, make sure you go EARLY! Line of car starts around 9am and park will close at capacity."
Wildlife awareness: Magnolia Park Campground features resident peacocks that roam freely. "Staff is very helpful. Gates secure park at night beautiful peacocks on grounds. Clean and neat. Across from Lake Apopka with more walking trail than we can do over 15 miles."
Campfire restrictions: Some campgrounds have specific rules about open fires. "At the tent sites you are not allowed to have campfires which is kind of a bummer. The sites are nice with a good view of the lake," notes a visitor to Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake.
Tips for Camping with Families
Theme park proximity: When planning visits to Orlando attractions, consider travel times from camp. "This is a great location to get away from everything, without going far. It has nice, spread out spots, and plenty of activities if you are outdoorsy."
Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with recreational options for children. "The Orlando Kissimmee KOA Holiday is great park to visit when staying in the Orlando area. Most shopping and restaurants are within a 5-10 minute drive. And all the tourist attractions are within 30 minutes: Walt Disney World 15 minutes, Universal Studios 23 minutes, SeaWorld 17 minutes."
Playground access: Clerbrook Golf & RV Resort offers family facilities beyond golf. "The campground is family friendly but there is a big senior/retiree presence, they also have a decent playground and a fenced in Dog Park."
Evening activities: Some dog-friendly campgrounds near Killarney offer organized night programs. "We camped for three nights and loved it! Yes it rained most of the time but our site never flooded!! Such a nice view of the sunset from where we were. Saw lots of animals. Everyone was very nice!"
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose sites based on specific needs and hookups available. "There are some full hookup with sewer. Reserve America does not note which ones have sewer too but when I did some more research I found one review that mentioned that site #'s 16,18,20, 30, 32,33, 34 (ADA), 35,36 (ADA), 37,38,39, & 40 are the sites that have sewer too."
Power requirements: Verify electrical capacity before booking. "We kept tripping the 30A breaker with AC on and a hot plate or microwave. But in the end price seemed reasonable for what it was. They did have a note saying electric lines were being improved and power may intermittently go out."
Maneuvering space: Consider vehicle size when selecting campgrounds. "Holy moly did it take a lot to get this into our spot. Our neighbor across from us had to move his truck and several neighbors were helping direct us into our spot. Everyone we spoke with complained about the lack of space to get a big rv into these spot. But... once in it was very nice."
