Such a beautiful park! Many full timers. They book for next winter beginning in March every year. Simple sites, paved sites, sites with tables, concrete pads, cabins, group sites, communal fire places. This park has it all. Did I mention the store, restaurant, bingo nights, swimming pool, shuffleboard, pickle ball all courts, and karaoke nights?

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Simple and well maintained

Our visit was relaxing and enjoyable. We visited in July and the shade from all the trees around our site helped keep the heat tolerable. The camp site’s aren’t dispersed and a little close together but we didn’t have any immediate neighbors around us so it was perfect. We stayed on site 008 and it was spacious enough for our large cabin tent, picnic table, additional table, dog pool, chairs, etc. Our site is conveniently close to the bathrooms. I liked that there is only one main dumpster and it’s kept a distance from the camp sites. I think this helped keep any raccoons that may have been around away from the campers. AMAZING star gazing location.

Ranger Review: Umara Z-Trail Shoes by Xero @ Sunshine Travel RV Resort

Campground Review: Sunshine Travel RV Resort is an encore/thousand trails campground. The grounds are very well maintained with lots of amenities like pool, horseshoe, shuffleboard, Mini gold course, clubhouse with restrooms and an attached laundry facility. Since we were there for a soccer tournament, it was nice to have a place to wash the stinky uniforms in between games. We never saw any staff because the office is closed on weekends which posed a small problem when we had an issue in the laundry room. Other than that, it was a nice reasonably priced place to stay with a variety of campers, permanent residents and cabins for rent. Gear review: I wore my Xero Umara Z-trail shoes all weekend. It is my second pair to receive and I love them. So comfortable you hardly know they are there. No rub areas or hot spots from long use. I have worn them in a kayak, riverbed, soccer field, running track and just around the house. Highly recommend giving them a try!

    Wonderful Park

We discovered this place on a vacation trip to see a friend on Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce FL. We are now camping here seasonally in a 35 ft Class A RV. There's a large pool, a good-sized general / convenience store with all the essentials you might need, and a full restaurant right on site. The RV sites vary in size and set-up, most are level, most have a concrete patio. most have full hook-ups. There are also a number of "villas" (short, single-wide manufactured homes) that people either rent for an extended stay, or own, interspersed throughout the park. Many people live here year-round, and even more live here for three or six months during winter. There are 3 rustic cabins and a few spaces for tents. While this is billed as a "family" resort, most of the longer-term campers are retired, or "digital nomads" that work remotely. There are a few families with kids, and a few people like us who don't have children but are younger than retirement age. It's a good mix. There are adult activities - Bingo, karaoke, jam sessions, trivia night, pickleball, tennis, shuffleboard, Pentaque, cornhole, basketball, crafts (for adults), and more. Short stays are not cheap, but longer stays are pretty affordable considering the great pool and all there is to do. Oh, there are fireplaces at the premium pull-through sites, fires are allowed on regular sites only in a raised, enclosed firepit. There is also community firepit. We love it here.

    Such a hidden gem!

We came out for a quick getaway as this is only about an hour from home. The place was dead, but still amazing. Everything was open, and we had most of the resort to ourselves. The staff was great. Pool was fun. Food and drinks reasonable. They have lots of activities, and the kids really enjoyed the scavenger hunt. The tiki bar was such a cool setting. We can’t wait to come back when it cools a little more.

Management is a nightmare for long term. Save your trouble and go elsewhere

We sold our house in West Palm Beach and relocated to Vero Beach for work, choosing to stay in our RV at this park while awaiting our new home to be built. Initially, we were excited, but the management at this park turned out to be a nightmare. Despite the reasonable and straightforward rules, we faced constant harassment. We have two dogs that we walk multiple times a day. There are no trash cans or doggy bags on the property except in the dog park, so we took the initiative to buy an outdoor trash can and a bulk supply of dog waste bags to ensure we cleaned up after our pets. Yet, we received weekly notices accusing us of not cleaning up after our dogs. Each time I went to the main office to discuss these notices, I was told to“just ignore it” as it was likely a“pesty neighbor.” Additionally, when family visited us for the day and parked at our RV slot, we received notices about parking violations. After discussing this with the office, we were advised to have our visitors park in the lot by the restaurant, which we did. Despite this, we continued to receive notices for various infractions, such as improper water hookup and not stopping completely in the neighborhood. This felt like borderline harassment. As responsible adults who strive to follow regulations, we were perplexed and frustrated by these continuous and unfounded accusations. Each time we sought clarification from the office, they dismissed our concerns, blaming"nosey neighbors" and suggesting neighborly disputes were at play. Ultimately, we were given a 30-day notice to vacate the property. This experience is particularly disappointing because we had suggested this park for our upcoming family reunion, which would have brought 47 rentals for a week. Now, I can't wait to leave this place. For anyone considering a short-term stay, this park may suffice. However, I strongly advise against bringing pets unless you want to be harassed and falsely accused. For those seeking a long-term rental, avoid this park at all costs, as you will face weekly harassment. Furthermore, we had several packages confirmed as delivered to the“receptionist/front desk,” which mysteriously went missing, apparently mishandled by the staff. Our initial excitement to be part of the Road Runner community has completely dissipated. I am eager to leave and will never return. I do not recommend this park and will be warning others. 0/10.---

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Incredible for FL Camping

All around a great location to get away and explore. This is one of the most comfortable and well-kept campgrounds I've found in FL. The staff and volunteers were very attentive and accommodating. The other campers were friendly and enthusiastic. We tent camped in the Equestrian loop, and the sites were decently spaced with plenty of room for our two tents, two cars, and 8 campers to spread out without bothering the neighbors. There are no stores or restaurants nearby, so pack well. These sites have water, electric, grill, and a table. Firewood is available for $7 cash per bundle (honor system). The dumpster is by the firewood. You can buy ice from the rangers for $2.50 during business hours. Showers are hot. Bathrooms are spacious.

I should probably mention that I'm camping spoiled. I traveled for a year or so around the country tent camping, and lived in Colorado for 10 years camping at least once a month out west. I'm from Florida, and I really didn't think there was much worth seeing here, so I stopped looking. It turns out I was wrong.

The air was so clean that we felt like we were on oxygen! The night sky was absolutely breathtaking, but catching dawn and dusk over the landscape is really nice too. The trails were well maintained and clearly planned to create a unique experience, while being just challenging enough to feel like a real adventure.

The animals just weren't afraid of humans. Our 6 teenagers were so excited to stand face-to-face, only a few feet from gentle deer, bunnies, and turkeys. We even saw some lazy baby alligators sunning on the Military Trail.

The Prairie Loop Trail took much longer than we anticipated, and the wind pushing us back was insane, but it was gorgeous and we had a lot of fun. I'll just plan better for that next time. And, the whole family agrees there will be a next time, soon!

If you are looking for a place in FL where you really feel "out in it", away from absolutely everything, while still having what you need to be comfortable, this is it.

    Sebastian Inlet State Park Campground

    Beachfront Camping

If you like camping and water sports, you will love SISP. The park is sorrounded by water, you have the Indian River Lagoon, The Sebastian Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. The campgrounds is located on the Sebastian Inlet. The sites on the 1st camp loop face the inlet. The views are breathtaking. You can watch the stingrays and dolphins jumping out of the water. You can watch the sunrise over the Atlantic and watch is set over the Inlet. There is an awesome cove area that is perfect for families with small children. There are two boat ramps located within the park, one for motorized vessels and one for non motorized vessels. They also have a marina about a mile down the road where they have boat, kayak and SUPB rentals. SiSP is home to the world famous fishing pier. There are two fishing piers that extend out into the Atlantic ocean. Great for catching shark, Snook and Redfish. You can snorkel and scuba dive in the Cove (great for small children), Inlet or Atlantic, you have to have your own gear. There is a reef just a few hundred yards off the beach. There is an abundance of sea life including , dolphins, manatees and sea turtles. Dont forget to bring your surfboard. The museam offers sea turtle walks during nesting season. If you have a boat you can go out to the sandbar and anchor out for a day fun on the water. There is a great restaurant that has dining views of the Atlantic ocean. I had lunch up on the deck one day and watched the Tarpon run. The restaurants serves breakfast and lunch. I recomend the Mahi sandwich with a cold beer. They also serve alcohol and wine. They show movies on the water. Enjoy a movie while you float in the cove on you tube.

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

Florida Trail and Kissimmee Prairie Preserve SP Partnership

The Florida Trail is a foot trail that carries hikers and backpackers from Big Cypress to Gulf Shores near Pensacola Florida. It is built and maintained by volunteers in 19 chapters across the state and supported by public and private partners throughout the state. Kissimmee Prairie Preserve SP hosts the trail for over twenty miles in Okeechobee County, Fl. The Tropical Trekkers Chapter of the Florida Trail Association maintains close to 80 miles of the trail in Okeechobee County including the portion of the trail that transverses KPPSP. Once a year (usually in November) the park becomes our host as 50 or more FTA members gather for an annual work week to get our section of the trail in shape for the winter Florida hiking season. We reserve six to ten campsites for the week and the park provides additional overflow sites as needed. Not all our volunteers are there for the entire week nor do they all camp at the park but those that do are treated to great facilities (clean bath house and campsites), friendly park staff who share their knowledge of the park and the prairie and frequently provide tours of the park in their awesome swamp buggies, great views of Florida's darkest skies, prairie vistas and the wildlife (typically deer, racoons and wild turkeys) who frequent the campground. I hope the park staff knows how much the FTA and all our volunteers appreciate the work they do to preserve the prairie and promote the Florida Trail and the hiking public. Thank you!!!

Could be great but currently Meh.

So much potential. Pool, food, games, billiards, pizza, a store, golf cart rentals, big spaces, dog-friendly, premium spaces with beautiful pads and fire pits, brick fire pits or even grills. Lots of space and 3 free wireless devices for your stay.

Cabanas at the pool are stupid expensive, ($350 a day as of this writing). They sat empty for our entire 11 day stay. In our talks with other campers, no one has ever seen one in use except as a consolation to an upset camper. So technically never rented.

Lots of rules; some good and some bad. However, seemingly none are actually enforced. This leads to dogs off-leash running around (their camp site and yours). No clear paths to get across the back sides of the park, which leads to campers routinely cutting through your site to get from point A to point B.

The first 5 days of our stay were quiet. After that, the park started filling up and you could see the place slip into free-form mode.

The Wi-Fi was great when it worked, and you were almost always connected. BUT, dozens of times a day the internet just froze. Devices would bounce on and off the WiFi dozens of times in minutes, prompting you to confirm terms of service every-single-time. It got old and we bailed on the WiFi by day 4. Although there was a 24/7 support number for the WiFi, it was worthless. The hosting company (AccessParks) really couldn’t have cared less if the WiFi ever worked and it showed, but only after two waits on hold for 1.5+ hours each time.

The views were beautiful, and the golf carts are in great shape and well maintained. Water pressure was wonderful, and the sewer hookups on all available sewer sites were very well maintained and at the correct height for any camper, they are flush with the concrete pad on every site.

The pizza at the shop was very good, and the little store has some great gems. But the Tiki bar has ridiculously weird limited hours, and neither the food nor the bar are anywhere near the pool and game areas. No restaurant choices in the park for sit down dining.

The soda machines on the premises are supposed to be connected, allowing for credit card or Android Pay, Samsung Pay and Apple Pay options. Similarly, the laundry facilities are setup for digital payments. BUT, and it’s a big but, even the machines seem to suffer from the internet oddities of this location. Most work once in a while, but really just spin the little orb and time-out before saying something went wrong, try again later. So even the on-prem machines can’t connect to the internet….hmmm.

The dog parks are nice, but not policed at all. Lots of un-cleaned dog poop that we ended up picking up. People parking in them for hours using them as their own fenced yard.

This facility has so much that could go right, but just needs some more interaction from management to make it great.

We would come back, but hope that these things could be addressed.

    Nice stay

Low key, quiet place, helpful staff. Awesome shade (pretty critical in Florida this time of the year). Really can’t say anything bad about our experience here—stayed for a week—no complaints at all. We will definitely visit again when we are in the area!

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, the Florida prairie at its best!

KPPSP is a small park about 40 miles north of Okeechobee, FL. It is located along the Kissimmee River and is home to several endangered species including the Grasshopper Sparrow. The camp ground is small but includes areas dedicated to horses and astronomers as well as us regular folks. The astronomers enjoy some of the darkest skies on the east coast and the events surrounding a full moon (providing we have clear skies) are awesome. The park also hosts a long section of the Florida National Scenic Trail, a top notch backpacking venue. Check out www.floridatrail.org for more information. The park also offers swamp buggy rides with knowledgeable rangers accompanying to introduce campers to the prairie habitat and it's inhabitants. Spend a week or two here to enjoy a part of Florida you never knew existed!

Amazing star gazing. Just follow the Florida scenic Trail and you’ll find the most beautiful campsite with a romantic view of the stars.

My husband and I hiked eight days on the Florida trail halfway through we camped at this wonderful site. It was a sight for sore eyes and sore feet. The stars were so close at night I felt I could just reach out and touch them.

    Interior Florida open landscapes

Different from other areas of Florida the Prairie area is open and vast. I found it quiet, and enjoyable place to be alone with my thoughts and hiking. I was met with groups of wild turkeys and other animals and enjoyed peaceful wondering. Great set up for this tent camper and would love to go back again.

Stay at River Ranch RV Resort Next Door Instead

This review relates to River Ranch RV Resort, which is next to the Westgate property. I would personally not stay at the Westgate RV since it is basically just an open field with RV spots.

River Ranch RV next door is a beautiful place with fantastic spots. We stayed in spot 323 which had its own swing and fireplace. Our 37 ft rig fit perfectly and five year old loved riding bike around the park. Everyone was super friendly and I recommend renting a golf cart, though expensive at $60 a day,

Be aware of telephone phone reception. At our spot we could not get any reception with ATT. After buying a Verizon hotspot down the road in Lake Wales, we were able to WFH.a

Would highly recommend this spot in Central Florida.

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

Great place in the middle of nowhere

Ranked as an International Dark Sky campsite, this is one of the few in Florida that have this recognition. We came during a cloudy weekend but it broke one night for us to catch a glimpse of the Milky Way-beautiful. The campground itself is well maintained and peaceful. There are three sections for campers here: a family campground, an astronomy pad, and an equestrian site. We stayed in the equestrian area (you don’t need to have a horse to do so). Site 24 is right next to a new shower and bathroom house they added not too long ago. The facility is clean, and has four bathroom/hot shower combo stalls. There are more in the family campsite area. Hiking trails run through the area. The campground is far removed from civilization, so make sure you come prepared. The campground office sells ice, but that’s about it. Firewood is also available. Staff is very helpful and friendly, and they run tours on swamp buggy style OHVs out of the area as well.

    Awesome stargazing and wildlife

If you love camping, wildlife, and stargazing but still want the convenience of amenities (i.e electricity, running water, bathroom, shower) then this is the place for you.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is part of IDA International Dark-Sky Places. The park has little light pollution and also a stargazing pad where you can also camp on.

The campgrounds aren't large but the campsites are good for tents and RVs. The one site we stayed at had water and electric hook-ups and a firepit. We were close to very clean restroom area that also had showers, washer and dryer. They do have primitive campsites for the more rustic individuals. The campgrounds are about 45 minutes from town, but the ranger station sells ice for $2.50 and firewood purchase is by honor system. We also saw other campers with their dogs so pet-friendly as well.

Lots of hiking trails and so much wildlife. We saw deer grazing near our campsite!

Make sure to bring lots of mosquito repellent, especially in the summer months. Otherwise you'll get bit...a lot! But it is Florida after all.

    Resort at Canopy Oaks

Fun place to visit and hangout for the weekend

Overall this is a great place to stay with some friends or just the family and make new friends while you are on your trip. If you are terrified of bugs this may not be the place for you (FYI), it is in the middle of Florida and in summer the bugs love to come out. We did a short 3 night 4 day trip from Thursday to Sunday after the July 4th weekend. On Thursday when we arrived the park was empty and only a few more rigs showed up after we arrived. It was nice having the park so empty, made it more relaxing. The staff are friendly and very helpful overall very enjoyable and we would go back again.

Demographics were all over the place. Seemed like a good bit of people were staying for multiple weeks. You had some older folks 55 and up with no kids but their was also a good bit of families with kids ranging from 3ish up to 14ish (I suck at telling how old kids are) and so that is a complete guess. We had a 4 year old with us not to many kids his age but a good bit of kids older than him.

Normal checkin hours are from 1am - 5pm, we got in a little later around 6:50pm. Check In was easy, when we pulled up they had all our paper work sitting in the mailbox ready for us. A staff member did pull up in a golf cart and great us.

The bathroom facilities are not bad. They look nice and function well but could use some better cleaning. The showers could use a little more water pressure and they don’t get super hot. The facilities we used had a good bit of insects in it, a palmetto water bug here or there, ant’s crawling up the wall, moths, spiders, mosquitos. This was probably partially due to the door into the building did not shutting all the way on it’s own. You had to forcefully shut it. But then again you are in the middle of the woods in Florida. I would half expect to see those types of bugs everywhere. The facilities do need some more upkeep, I don’t want to see what the place looks like in five years.

The club house had a large great room with 10 round tables, pool table, and ping pong table, and a few lounging chairs/couches. Just a heads up the pool queue‘s do not have any tips on them and the ping pong paddles are in the same condition. Bring your own paddles and ping pong balls if you want to play. The Gym is in the club house, and has some cardio equipment and free weights. Overall it was a nice gym and gets the job done. I believe the Gym was only 18 and up but it is open 24/7.

The pool was great, but we also went on a fairly empty weekend. If the park was pack the pool would have been over crowded. Not sure how busy it gets other weekends but i would say they should look at putting in a second pool at some point. Ample seating around the pool with lounge chairs. They only have a few tables with umbrellas so get to the pool early if you want to grab one or you can rent a cabana for $150 a day. The cabana’s have a few couches and table under them.

The Tiki bar is great, nice large tiki hut with tv’s a few fans and cheap drinks but they are strong! The mixed drinks are great, I liked the Polk County Punch and the wife liked the Florida Sunshine but I recall the drink looking more like swamp water than sun shine. They have live music in the evening and the bar stays open till 11pm. They also have pirate trivia on Saturday FYI it’s not about pirates.

It was nice that they laid out activities for the kids. Different arts and craft activities, water slide, foam party, slime tube, etc. It seemed like it was something new everyday.

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Long way from nowhere

Expect a long travel to this remote site.   It’s a couple miles of reasonably decent dirt roads to get there, after several miles of remote highways. The only designated dark sky site in Florida.   It does not disappoint for night sky viewing.   If you’re camping here, please be courteous and keep your outdoor lights to a minimum.  The night sky’s are just breathtaking.   Check www.spotthestation.nasa.gov to see if you’ll get a glimpse of the space station while your there.   Hiking/biking trails are plentiful.   Be aware that there’s a LOT of loose sand.   So even on a mountain bike you’ll have to walk now and then.   Great birding.  Crested cara cara are frequent as are flocks of turkey strolling through the campsites.   Be sure to head out the road you came in back to the first turn and take the trail to the left (as you’re leaving).   There’s a gator hole just 1/4 mile down the trail.  Nature trail is a nice hammock view.  No pets on that particular trail.

There are 2 camp loops only the first camp loop has a bath house, which is very nice.   The equestrian camp has porta potties.  Many of those folks drive over to the bathhouse.  Even the bathhouse has outdoor red lights.

    NO SEE'UM Sanctuary

I really don't want to give a bad review of a campground but OH MY GOODNESS! The only thing I can remember about this place is getting eaten alive by No See' Ums. There were however cute bunny rabbits hopping all over the place. It had lots of things to do like playground, hike to water, skim boarding, fishing, etc. but they were all overshadowed by the bugs. Maybe someone else has a different opinion of this place during Spring or Winter time.

On the IRL at the inlet

Not a bad campground. On the water. But no waterfront campsites. To launch boat/kayak/canoe must drive to launching ramp. Great fishing right at the inlet. Beach access as well as river access. Decent snack shack at north end park, but have to drive over the bridge to access. North end park also has a tide pool without wakes for swimming and manatee often come in.
