    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Fishermens Memorial State Park Campground

    Last minute trip

Rainy nasty October weekend but nonetheless facilities were spotless. Hookups were awesome and easy. Layout is amazing, mostly pull through and pet friendly. Definitely a summer destination next year.

    Fishermens Memorial State Park Campground

    Great location

We booked online having never been here before, our mistake. The site we chose is very uneven so leveling the RV wasn't real easy. Our fifth wheel front jacks are on the ground and two of the four wheels are off the ground. This seems to be common among the first part of the campground some sites are fairly level but not most of them. Now the back half of the campground has 50@ full hookups with much longer and level sites. My advice is to book the back section if you're a big Class A with a toad, or a long fifth wheel. Sites in the back seem to have more room to them. Water pressure was @ 50 psi.

Guide to Niantic

Camping options around Niantic, Connecticut extend inland from the Long Island Sound shoreline in New London County at elevations generally below 100 feet. The region experiences humid continental climate with moderately cold winters and warm summers. Most campgrounds operate from May through October when average temperatures range between 55-80°F, though several facilities like Aces High RV Park remain open year-round for cold-weather camping.

What to do

Water activities at Rocky Neck State Park: The 710-acre park features a sandy beach with designated swimming areas from Memorial Day through Labor Day. "Beautiful campground right near the beach. Hiking trails along the coast line," notes one visitor. Sites operate seasonally from May through September.

Kayaking at local waterways: Nearby waterways provide paddling opportunities within short driving distance of camping areas. "One day we launched our kayaks north of the drawbridge in town at the public launch and paddled down to Mystic Seaport which was fun to see the historic boats from the water," shares a camper at Sun Outdoors Mystic.

Historic site exploration: Visit Mystic Seaport Museum, a recreated 19th-century village 20 minutes from most campsites. "The location is great to visit the Mystic Seaport museum site," reports a visitor at Sun Outdoors Mystic. "The grounds are clean and well maintained."

Mini-golf and family entertainment: Local attractions include dedicated recreation areas. "Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf," mentions a camper staying at Aces High RV Park. The campground itself offers "a clean playground and well maintained pool."

What campers like

Multiple swimming options: Most campgrounds maintain pools for guest use when beach access isn't convenient. "I love that I see the same staff there every year. There are seasonal and weekenders alike... and my husband loves playing volleyball in the adult pool," explains a visitor at Strawberry Park.

Well-spaced sites: Some campgrounds prioritize spacing between campsites. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," notes one Aces High RV Park camper.

Campground recreation facilities: On-site amenities keep campers engaged during downtime. "Lots of things for kids to do. We watched a magician and played pickle ball on the courts. Kids had fun on the many play grounds," reports a visitor at Strawberry Park, which features "6 pools with adult only pool and splash pad for the kiddos."

Waterfront options: Select campgrounds offer premium waterside spots. "We paid $150/night for a 'Premium Waterfront FHU Site' on the lake. A bit pricey, but really nice site including level concrete pad and patio, clean and well-maintained utilities, and beautiful view," shares an Aces High visitor.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds close during winter months. "Fall foliage season fills many parks fast, with most campgrounds in the region operating seasonally from spring through mid-October," with Rocky Neck State Park specifically running "from May 26 to September 29."

Variable site quality within campgrounds: Site conditions can differ significantly at the same facility. "Our site didn't have sewer, but the electric and water were working fine. We saw maintenance people making repairs while we were there," explains a camper at Sun Outdoors Mystic.

Bathroom/shower facilities: Cleanliness varies between parks and during different seasons. "Bathrooms were dirty and only cleaned after our 4th day there," notes one Sun Outdoors Mystic visitor, while at another campground, "the bathrooms and showers are spotless and newly painted."

Traffic and noise considerations: Some locations experience periodic traffic noise. "Heavy traffic on the street but quieted down at night," reports a visitor at Crocker's Boatyard, a unique marina-based camping option in New London.

Tips for camping with families

Pet-friendly options with dedicated areas: Many campgrounds accommodate pets but have specific restrictions. "Pet friendly with plenty of area to walk... fishing areas for the kids," reports an Aces High visitor. Some parks feature "a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!"

Rainy day activities: Indoor options keep children occupied during inclement weather. "When my family went here it poured! And we were thankful that there were so many things to do, painting ceramics, karaoke, an arcade," recalls a Strawberry Park camper, adding "Bingo is always a family favorite and they even had that as well!"

Wildlife awareness: Local fauna requires proper food storage. "Keep food locked up too many skunks!!!" warns a Strawberry Park visitor, while another camper at Rocky Neck State Park notes "The skunks are friendly! Great for kids!"

Varied site layouts for different needs: Campgrounds offer different configurations based on your setup. "My site was tent only and you couldn't pull your car up to the site so unloading and loading was a hassle. Beach is a short drive on site and the showers were one site over," explains a Rocky Neck State Park camper.
