Aces High RV Park in East Lyme offers level sites with full hookups, water access, and big rig accommodation on spacious gravel pads. A visitor commented that the "sites are well organized and no issues with hookups. Propane is available at the store." Sun Outdoors Mystic (formerly Seaport RV Resort) operates from April to mid-October with electric and water hookups, though not all sites include sewer connections. Cell service varies by carrier throughout the region, with AT&T showing better coverage based on visitor reports, allowing for reliable hotspot connectivity at most developed campgrounds.

    Douglas Forest RV Resort

    Awesome Campground In The Forest

We had an incredible stay at Douglas Forest RV Resort! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and well-maintained everything was. The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi— a big plus for us since we work remotely on the road. What really sets this place apart is the location. You’re literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical. It’s pet-friendly too, and our dog loved the wooded trails and open areas. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the camp store had everything we needed. Even though the recreation area is still being built, the amenities already in place more than made up for it. We’re already planning our next trip for summer when the pool opens! If you’re looking for a relaxing spot that blends nature with convenience, look no further. Douglas Forest RV Resort is a true hidden gem!

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

Guide to Salem

The area features numerous freshwater ponds and is located approximately 40 miles east of New Haven along the Thames River watershed. What to do

Kayaking access points: Several campgrounds provide direct water access for paddling. At Countryside RV Park, you can launch directly from the property with boat-in camping options. A camper notes it's "easy drive to lake/fishing" and that while it has "limited child activities," it offers a quiet environment where "rules are enforced."

Mini golf nearby: Within a 5-minute drive from Aces High RV Park, families can access off-site mini golf courses. "Nearby (5 min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf," reports one visitor who appreciated the proximity to recreational options beyond the campground.

Historic Mystic attractions: Sun Outdoors Mystic provides convenient access to regional attractions. "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," writes a visitor who used the campground as a base for sightseeing. Another camper adds it's "not much of a traditional campground but a great place to stay and explore the town of mystic."

What campers like

Waterfront sites: Pond-front camping options provide scenic views at select campgrounds. At Ross Hill RV Park & Campground, campers enjoy river views. "If you want water views this is the place... The campground is set on the Q River and if you're lucky enough to see it from your site it's beautiful," explains a long-time visitor.

Concrete pads and patios: Some premium sites feature upgraded surfaces for easier leveling and setup. One camper at Aces High RV Park appreciated their "Premium Waterfront FHU Site on the lake" noting "clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio. Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should."

Seasonal recreation options: Most campgrounds offer warm-weather recreation from late spring through early fall. At Thousand Trails Sturbridge, visitors mention a "cool pond for paddle boats and canoeing" and note it's "family friendly." There's also an "indoor pool with lifeguard" and "lots of woods with a walking trail starting at the edge of the campground."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Network coverage varies significantly by location and carrier. At Thousand Trails Sturbridge, campers report "cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls." Another visitor notes it's "bad the cell reception is. Normally, I'd say that's a perk for camping but we're full-timers and work on the road."

Campground layouts: Site spacing differs between properties and can affect privacy. Some RV parks near Salem focus on maximizing capacity over spaciousness. At Douglas Forest RV Resort, visitors appreciate that "The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi." However, other campgrounds may have tighter configurations.

Bathroom facilities: Maintenance standards for restrooms vary between properties. One visitor at Sun Outdoors Mystic observed that "the bathrooms and showers are spotless and newly painted" after recent renovations, while some smaller campgrounds have more basic facilities that receive less frequent attention.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: Several campgrounds feature swimming facilities with varying rules. Aces High RV Park offers a "clean playground and well maintained pool" along with "large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court." This provides structured recreation options during summer visits.

Dog-friendly areas: Many campgrounds provide designated pet recreation spaces. One visitor at Aces High RV Park noted "there is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" while mentioning nearby "local kayaking areas" for additional recreation.

Playground options: Play equipment quality varies significantly between campgrounds. A visitor to Countryside RV Park emphasized the "quiet, limited child activities" nature of the property, while Thousand Trails Sturbridge was described as having a playground that "was a hit for our kids!"

Tips from RVers

Utility reliability: Electrical service quality varies between properties, affecting air conditioning use during summer. A visitor to Sun Outdoors Mystic stated "our site didn't have sewer, but the electric and water were working fine. We saw maintenance people making repairs while we were there."

Site configurations: Some campgrounds offer specialized site arrangements for group camping. Sun Outdoors Mystic provides "buddy sites" where "our patios faced each other. I like this configuration when camping with friends but would not like this site if we did not know our neighbors."

Seasonal considerations: RV campgrounds near Salem, Connecticut operate with varying schedules. Most have limited availability after mid-October. Sun Outdoors Mystic operates "April 14 to October 15" while Countryside RV Park runs from "May 1 to Oct 15," making advance planning essential for shoulder season visits.
