    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Fishermens Memorial State Park Campground

    Last minute trip

Rainy nasty October weekend but nonetheless facilities were spotless. Hookups were awesome and easy. Layout is amazing, mostly pull through and pet friendly. Definitely a summer destination next year.

What to do

Kayaking at water access points: At Rocky Neck State Park Campground, campers can enjoy paddling opportunities. "Anyone with kayaks can't easily get to boat launch. It's 4-5 miles by car at 4 mile river boat launch," notes reviewer Nita D., highlighting the need to plan transportation to water access points.

Visit Mystic attractions: From Sun Outdoors Mystic, campers can explore the historic seaport town. "One day we launched our kayaks north of the drawbridge in town at the public launch and paddled down to Mystic Seaport which was fun to see the historic boats from the water," shares Nancy W., describing an alternative way to experience this popular destination.

Beach access: The shoreline offers swimming opportunities during summer months. "Beach can be crowded. But it is worth it. Nice food shack. Great family place," reports Nichol P. about Rocky Neck State Park, indicating visitors should arrive early to secure beach space.

Mini-golf outings: Several campgrounds provide on-site activities or nearby entertainment options. "There is a nice mini golf section that has a number of nice sites but do not have hookups but are located near a bathhouse," mentions Nancy W. about the recreation options at Sun Outdoors Mystic.

What campers like

Spacious sites with privacy: Aces High RV Park earns praise for its roomy campsites. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," reports April L., contrasting with more crowded parks in the region.

Natural surroundings: Campers appreciate parks with wildlife viewing opportunities. "Beautiful pond and natural setting with lots of ducks, geese, chickens, and wild birds," notes Matt S. about his stay at Aces High RV Park, indicating the natural elements enhance the camping experience.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers matter to campers near Centerbrook. "The bathrooms in the campground were newer and immaculate," says Nancy W. about Sun Outdoors Mystic, though experiences vary by campground and season.

Swimming options: On-site pools provide recreation when beaches are crowded. "The kids enjoyed playing tennis & swimming in the pool at the campground," mentions Happy Camper L. about Ashaway RV Resort, indicating family-friendly amenities are available beyond beach access.

What you should know

Seasonal closures affect availability: Most rv sites near Centerbrook, Connecticut operate seasonally. "Our stay was in the spring before their busy season started so some things like the pool and water features were closed," notes Nancy W. about Sun Outdoors Mystic, highlighting the importance of checking amenity availability before booking.

Cell service varies by location: Connection quality depends on your provider and specific campground location. "We have AT&T service and streamed via our hotspot with no problems," reports Pam R. about her stay at Sun Outdoors Mystic, offering a counterpoint to reports of spotty service.

Bathroom cleanliness fluctuates: Facility maintenance varies widely between campgrounds. "Bathhouses and toilets were not as cleaned as I would have liked but passable. Coronavirus social distancing required," notes Nita D. about Rocky Neck State Park, indicating campers should adjust expectations or plan to use their own facilities when possible.

Tips for camping with families

Campground activities for kids: Look for parks with dedicated recreation areas. "The kids enjoyed playing tennis & swimming in the pool at the campground - there is also mini-golf, but we didn't get the chance to play," shares Happy Camper L. about Ashaway RV Resort, suggesting multiple on-site activities keep children engaged.

Beach proximity benefits: Waterfront access provides built-in entertainment. "The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails. A great family campsite with easy to get to activities," says Mauricio R. about Rocky Neck State Park, indicating the convenience of having recreation options within walking distance.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Natural encounters create memorable experiences. "It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up," notes April L. about Aces High RV Park, mentioning the various family-friendly amenities.

Pet-friendly considerations: Totoket Valley RV Park welcomes dogs with certain restrictions. "There is a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" shares April L. about the pet amenities at Aces High RV Park, important information for families camping with four-legged members.

Tips from RVers

Level site considerations: RV campers prioritize stable parking surfaces. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio. Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," notes Matt S. about his experience at Aces High RV Park, emphasizing the practical benefits of proper site preparation.

Off-season value: Visiting outside peak months can provide better availability. "We camped at site #4 (sunny) then moved to #38 (shady)," explains Nita D. about Rocky Neck State Park, indicating flexibility in site selection during less crowded periods.

Hookup reliability matters: RVers depend on consistent utilities. "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table," reports Tara N. about Totoket Valley RV Park, highlighting the essential services that make for comfortable RV camping.
