Best RV Parks & Resorts near Wetmore, CO

RV campgrounds near Wetmore provide full-service hookups at establishments like Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins, Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resort, and Haggards RV Campground. Royal Gorge features 125 level sites with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections, accommodating larger motorhomes on their spacious pull-through sites. Mountaindale offers 90 sites with terraced placement that ensures mountain views, while Haggards provides pull-through spots spacious enough for rigs with slideouts. Sites at most parks consist of gravel pads with concrete patios, though Peak RV Resort offers a fully paved surface throughout their 48-site facility. "The sites were large and plenty of room for my slideout and not too close to next site. Full hookup and good WiFi with 30 OTA channels."

Many parks in the area operate year-round, though services may be reduced during winter months. Access to some facilities requires navigating mountain roads with elevation changes, particularly those closer to Canon City and Colorado Springs. Cell service varies significantly by location, with Mountaindale specifically noted for poor AT&T and T-Mobile reception, though park WiFi typically compensates. Dump stations are available at most parks, with some charging additional fees for use by non-guests. Between May and September, advance reservations are strongly recommended as parks fill quickly with seasonal travelers. Pet policies generally allow dogs with some weight and breed restrictions, while most parks provide propane filling services on-site or within a short driving distance. Laundry facilities and shower houses are standard amenities, though hours of operation may be limited in off-peak seasons.

    Mueller State Park Campground

    Absolutely Wonderful

This is less than thirty minutes from my house, but feels like a world away. Spots are close but private and paved pads make leveling easy. Most sites are pull through along the road and include electric. Back in sites are also available. The campground was full even with the snow and cold in early September. There are very few undesirable spots within the grounds, and the group sites are exceptional.

Vault and flush toilets are available at various locations through the campground, and there is a self-service dump station available at the front of the campground. We did run into the issue of people dumping buckets of waste in the dump station and not washing everything down, so look before you step.

Tent pads are large platforms filled with pea gravel, and include well maintained picnic tables and fire rings. The grounds and campsites are beautifully maintained and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains are plentiful.

Watch out for wildlife and be sure to read restrictions and rules on the maps provided at the gate - use and closures change seasonally.

Cripple Creek Hospitality House & RV Park

Best rv park in Tellar County

Have spent summer 2021 here.  A few blocks from all the casinos (they all run shuttles).

Great staff, owners on site daily.  There is a food truck (Doc's) with GREAT food, permanently on site. Laundry on site, Shower & bathrooms.
The Cripple Creek Burros (free range about town) are here often. NOTE: the burros like our hummingbird feeders!
Open year round (limited rv sites open through winter)
Hotel on property was once the Cripple Creek Hospital and is "period restored."

I've spent seven summers in Colorado in my rv, Hospitality House and RV Park has been one of the best summers we've had.

32' 5th wheel, 50 amp. Reasonable long term rate.

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

Lathrop State Park has a little of everything

We have visited this park several times, in the summer, spring and fall. The campground provides a nice visitors center, two small lakes (one non-wake), a sand beach, paved and unpaved bike trails, fishing, a kids fishing pond, trails, and electric or no-hook-up camping. The campground is divided into three loops with each loop containing flush toilets and shower facilities. A tent-only campground is situated closer to the highway, while the three loops are far from the road and provide ample star-gazing experiences. Favorite spots include 102 (has a great view of the Spanish Peaks), and site 84 (private pull-through with junipers and other short trees to block the road/other campers). I have attended several ranger programs here and hiked on all trails. Playing on the beach and picnicking is enhanced by the water stations to wash off the sand, benches, picnic tables, and shade trees. Kayaking on the no-wake lake is peaceful and fishing is abundant. Bike riding is simple and mostly flat. A fully paved trail circles the lake and is accessible by the campgrounds. A public, 9-hole golf course sits directly next to the park. The course is inexpensive and fun for an afternoon or morning. If you've exhausted all your options at the park itself, head one hour away to the Great Sand Dunes National Park to "surf" on the dunes and learn about this beautiful area. This park truly has a little of everything and while it is one of the oldest state parks in Colorado, it is well-maintained and enjoyable year-round.

    Mueller State Park Campground

    Beautiful high altitude camping

This Colorado state park brings visitors year-round for all types of recreation. We have traveled here several times, both tent camping and in our camper. The views range from evergreens and aspen to Pikes Peak. Camping is a pleasure with electric hookups at several sites, a camper services station with showers, flush toilets, laundry, and a dump station with water filling. Water spigots are located throughout the park, but are not for camper filling. The rangers are consistently pleasant. Since the park is at 9,000 feet, bears and sporadic weather are present. The hiking trails are well-marked and lead to various ponds, abandoned buildings (from when this was a ranch) and an abundance of wildflowers. Fall is especially beautiful when the aspens turn gold. Winter camping is available and perfectly situated near sledding hills. There are several well-maintained picnic areas and a visitors center where you can learn about the wildlife and geology and purchase a few trinkets or the sweatshirt you will need by nightfall. There are no "bad" spots in this park. We particularly like 120, at the end of the loop. It is quiet and close to several trailheads. For more reviews of Mueller, see minnieoutwest.com.

    Peak RV Resort

    Will not visit again

Total charge was $101/night with fees. $7 reservation fee (I called in) and $6.40 credit card fee.

Feel free to think I'm paranoid but I absolutely did NOT like that we were required to allow them to copy our driver's license. In 12 years of RV'ing I've never seen this. The desk promised to shred the ID copy after we left or return it to us (when we left the clerk was confused about giving it back).

SIX pages! of legalese rules you have to sign that are obviously not being enforced anyway and appear to be focused on long term guests.

If there had been other options for a last minute stay I would have left, but they probably would have kept my money. Cancelations <72 hours before is NO REFUND.

Sites are adequately spaced and are neat and clean. Some small trees (fairly new park). Very nice paved roads and gravel sites but really just a parking lot. Some long term guests.

No picnic table or fire ring (wood fires not allowed in any case).

As with most "RV Resorts" describing it thusly is an exaggeration.

Gate code required for entry, difficult to see screen in sunlight.

Fees charged to accept packages.$1.50-$5 depending on size.

Two dogs under 25 pounds each are allowed.

    Aspen Acres Campground

    Well maintained & staffed

This was a delightful experience for us. There are sites for every type of camper: tent, trailer, RV, glamping and cabins. This is a somewhat small but well maintained private campground with lots of simple amenities. All is the wooded back-in sites have full hook-ups (30A) and there are pull-thru sites (Ithink they are still 30A). The center wooded area is perfect for tents. A small dog park gave our girls the chance to run free for a little. There is a shower house with bathrooms that are well maintained. Trash is kept tidy and didn’t smell even on the 97 degree day. Very easy to access but no road noise (at least not at our site).

We have a 26’ trailer and stayed in site 18. It was near the end of the row and relatively quiet. We only wish we had a longer power cable. (Our next purchase!) Our port is at the back and the outlet was way up front. To reach, we had to set up near the front of the site which limited our parking. Just pointing that out for others who might be ill prepared too.

We were too far away to take advantage of WiFi which is fine, we just wandered up near the office to check our texts once daily. It might be more accessible if you are located closer to the office. No cell service for Verizon. Personally, I was happy to be unplugged for a couple of days!

Although we had a fire ban in effect, we were able to rent a propane fire pit from the office. Be super cautious and check fire restrictions for Custer County. (http://oem.custercountygov.com/firecon.htm)

Aspen Acres has a lot more staff than I expected and they patrolled frequently. Very helpful and friendly.

5 minutes from Bishops Castle and 10 minutes from Lake Isabel ($7 day use fee). Easy drive up from I-25 but fairly steep in spots if that is problematic.

    We will stay again!

    Cripple Creek KOA

Awesome family campground with Mountain View’s

Maiden voyage with new toy hauler: many full service & large lots, LOTS of family activities (Royal Gorge, Dinosaur Museum, White Water Rafting, UTV Tours, Zip Lines, mini golf, pool, WiFi & large slide on site) & nearby Texas Creek trails for ATV’s. Quiet. Friendly! Helpful. Most are pull through lots. Great place to start for us!

Guide to Wetmore

RV campgrounds near Wetmore, Colorado sit at elevations between 5,500 and 6,500 feet, offering cooler summer temperatures than Colorado's eastern plains. Located between Canon City and Colorado Springs, the area experiences dramatic temperature swings between day and night, often dropping 30-40 degrees after sunset even in summer months. Cell service throughout the region is spotty with many campgrounds sitting in signal dead zones.

What to do

Hiking nearby trails: Royal Gorge RV Resort provides easy access to local hiking opportunities. "The location was perfect, close to the Royal Gorge bridge, rafting in the Arkansas River, hiking trails, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad and several great restaurants," notes mich from Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins.

Visit local attractions: Many campers use Wetmore area campgrounds as a base for exploring regional destinations. "From here we visited Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge and Pike's Peak, all within 30 minutes to one hour's drive," reports Lori C. about her stay at Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resort.

Family water activities: During summer months, water features at campgrounds provide recreation options. "The pool and hot tub were fantastic in the hot days," shares Lance H. who stayed at Royal Gorge RV Resort. Some sites also offer seasonal creekside camping for natural water access.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Mountaindale gets high marks for roomy camping spaces. "The site was extremely spacious with room to park our truck to the side and still have a big yard. There is a fire pit and picnic table and we were shaded by some big pines," writes Lori C.

Wildlife viewing: Many Wetmore area campgrounds feature regular wildlife sightings. "We saw deer wander around the campsites every morning and evening," reports a Mountaindale camper. Another camper at Haggards RV Campground notes, "So neat to see pronghorn in nearby fields as we sat drinking coffee."

Pet amenities: Dog owners appreciate dedicated pet facilities at certain campgrounds. Elizabeth S. writes of Haggards, "There's a seasonal pool, walking trails and a HUGE fenced dog park." Another camper called it "the best we've seen while traveling. Our older greyhound, who usually just follows us, actually did a few laps."

What you should know

Water quality issues: Some Wetmore area campgrounds have water system challenges. One Haggards camper reports, "Water system needs work; well water has rust and sediment, be prepared!"

Road construction impacts: Access to campgrounds can be affected by roadwork. "I had to leave two phone messages and a Facebook message to get info on how to maneuver around the horrible construction site right at the entrance," shares one camper at Garden of the Gods RV Resort.

Site spacing varies drastically: While some RV parks advertise spacious sites, reality varies. "The sites were large and plenty of room for my slideout and not too close to next site," writes a Haggards camper, while a Garden of the Gods visitor notes, "As I write this review, a fellow camper scurries past my open window about two feet from my face."

Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly activities: Some RV campgrounds near Wetmore provide dedicated children's amenities. "They have a water slide and other fun activities," notes a visitor to Colorado Springs KOA.

Consider tent camping options: Not all campgrounds accommodate tent campers. Lance H. shares about Royal Gorge: "We had a great tent spot up on the hill with a great view of the valley behind. So it was a quiet tent spot to ourself, but 30 seconds down the hill for access to the amazing restroom and showers!"

Ask about seasonal activities: Timing affects available amenities. One camper notes, "Many parks in the area operate year-round, though services may be reduced during winter months." Some parks also offer seasonal facilities like pools that close during colder months.

Tips from RVers

Arrival timing matters: Some Wetmore area RV parks have strict arrival policies. A Mountain View RV Resort visitor warns, "Due to road construction and detour we were expecting to arrive late to the rv camp, a little later than 9pm... I called 3 times during the day, to explain why we might arrive late."

Verify hookup arrangements: Unexpected water hookup configurations can cause issues. One camper at Pikes Peak RV Park shares, "I found out that I'd need to climb up the short retaining wall into my neighbors site to hookup our water hose. The spigot was shared between our sites."

Site selection is crucial: Ask specific questions about your assigned site. "It is very important to get a spot away from the road," advises a Mountaindale camper. "Beginning early morning until late afternoon M-F, trucks roar up and down this road. If your spot is near the road, as ours was, it is very annoying-especially if you try to set outside."
