    Ouray KOA

    Heaven in the mountains

Wow is all I can say! After surviving towing the airstream up Red Mountain pass, we pulled into the KOA and couldn’t be more happy. Our site backed up to a stream that sounded wonderful with running water. Each site has a picnic table and a combo fire ring/grill. They even welcome you with three large fire logs! They now offer horseback riding right from inside the KOA. They have everything from teepees to tent, cabin and RV camping. A great restaurant on site with a well stocked store and laundry facilities. This place is really well run. The only complaint is the WiFi, which is non existent, however, they are currently working on that and should have campwide WiFi by summer.

Pioneer Campground — Vega State Park

Nice cabin rentals in a Colorado State Park

The cabins are HA and have nice sidewalk paths from the parking lot. Inside a mini fridge, coffee maker, and a microwave are provided. There are 2 bunks in the back and a plastic kitchen table in the "living space." The cabins have nice patio furniture on the front porch, which was a nice touch for a State Park.  The outdoor picnic table and campfire area outside the cabin is large. The five cabins in this area are close together and you can view your neighbors but this was not a problem for us. (It would make for great a trip with extended family or friends.) One may consider the cabin pricey, but it was typical for a Colorado state park.

During our stay the bathrooms (vault toilets) near the cabins were so full of bees it was like Candyman was also staying the weekend. There are flush toilets and showers next to a small playground closer to the reservoir. A trail will take you from the cabins to the visitor center. While other areas of the park were not full during our stay, I imagine that at the peak of summer the boating and RVing is plenty.

In addition to plenty of tent and RV sites, Ridgeway SP also has three heated and furnished yurts for those seeking an enhanced comfort level. Each unit includes a fridge, futon type beds, dinner table and chairs. Bring your fishing poles, hiking shoes, water craft and dogs, cause they're all allowed.

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

    Ouray KOA

Best spot for tent, RV, & cabin!

The spots are spread out enough that you have privacy, there’s attendants around 24 hours of the day to help, and it’s hands down the cleanest place we’ve ever stayed. We rented a cabin (we stopped in on July 4th, sold out of tent spots) but they managed to accommodate us last minute. The staff is incredibly nice, and the price was right. Our cabin is the 2nd biggest option, it included: a queen, bunk beds, love seat, fridge, sink, and a microwave.

    Ouray KOA Holiday

    Quaint and quiet

Stayed at a small back-in site with 30 amp & electric in our camper van. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Loved that they had a store, laundry room, and firewood for sale. The store closes at 5:00 & we arrived at 5:10 but the office lady still checked us in and made sure we had firewood. The campground is well-maintained and clean.

Elk Ridge Campground — Ridgway State Park

    Very nice

Nice campground with spacious sites. Concrete pads under the picnic table and fire pits. Water access nearby. Bathrooms were super clean and the showers were nice and hot. Laundry facilities available. We stayed on D-183 and had a nice view of the mountains and the lake. Definitely one of the best state park campgrounds in Colorado.

    Kebler Corner

    Would happily visit again!

We stayed in a camper van over a busy holiday and loved it! We were hoping for a peaceful getaway for us and our dog and found it at Kebler. Yes, some of the spaces are close together but everyone there made it work well. The angled spots and strategic landscaping help too. Plenty of grassy common areas to stretch your legs and your pup’s (on leash), so much so we didn’t feel like we missed out on anything by not being parked with the big coaches along the river. Even better since the large river spots had little/no natural shade (most seemed to have their own awnings that our van didn’t so no worries there I think for them). The tent spots were in a different area on the other side of the property a little away from the busier parts. They also had less shade but had level pads and but seemed closer to the bridge (and hiking). The community vibe was respectful and friendly and it was lovely to stroll about and enjoy it all. Families were out and about, playing with their children and trying different things to do. There was a little playground and some activities in a covered space like velcro axe throwing and corn hole. There were soccer goals set up at one of the grassy areas too. There was also a frisbee golf course, hammocks and picnic tables scattered around the property. A sign by the bathrooms invited camp guests to go gentle group hike if you meet at the bridge at the posted time in the morning. The general store was open during the day and had more than I expected (came for stickers and snacks, left with a game of Bananagrams and more). There wasn’t cell service but wifi worked well for what we needed. The bathrooms were clean and the water was warm. On a busy weekend you might need to use the portable toilets near the tent sites if the regular ones are occupied at a busy time. In the future, splitting the shower and toilet facilities might help with that long term, but I am not sure how hard (and expensive) that is to do in places that are tucked away into the mountains like this. We did use the coin laundry and that worked well. At the time of our visit it was $2 for the washer and $3.50 for the dryer. There was a variety of cute cabins for rent with a good range in size and cost - and some have own their bathroom and even little patio spaces. The hosts and staff were friendly and helpful, even doing trash pickup in the morning if you left it out at a certain time by your site. Kebler is in a beautiful setting, has thoughtfully-designed spaces and is carefully maintained. We would definitely come back - hopefully in a camper van / travel trailer or even just to stay in one of the cabins.

    Meadows of San Juan Resort

    Great value, great location!

This is our second time staying here! We met the new owners today upon checking out and they were incredibly kind and you could tell how much passion they have for all the upgrades they are doing to the property. We rent a tiny cabin when we come and it’s always clean and has everything we need. I love seeing the stars at night and being able to bring our dog. Will be back next year again!

Guide to Olathe

Cabin accommodations near Olathe, Colorado offer camping options 5,500 feet above sea level in Colorado's western slope region. The area sits between the Gunnison River and Uncompahgre Plateau, creating a moderate climate with less severe weather than higher mountain elevations. Most cabin rentals remain accessible year-round with peak season running May through September when temperatures average 70-85°F during daytime hours.

What to do

Fishing access: 30 yards from sites at Uncompaghre River Resort where "The Uncompaghre River was about 30 yards behind the camp site - a short walk through the tall tree line." Their riverfront sites allow easy fishing without driving elsewhere, and as Gordon D. notes, "12 miles to Montrose - a cute yet full sized town - anything you need is there."

Hiking trails: Multiple difficulty levels available at Ridgway State Park where both the Elk Ridge and Dakota Terraces campgrounds provide cabin access. The park offers "tons of places to go from there and the evenings by the fire. Great, super clean facilities and friendly staff," according to Christian M. Many trails connect to the reservoir shoreline with moderate elevation changes.

River walks: Easy access paths at Riverbend RV Park & Cabins where "The river and pond are were very nice to sit by and observe nature. The Canada geese families were fun to watch." Mary F. also noted the park is "very well maintained and most sites are decent size." Their riverside cabins include picnic areas and fire rings.

What campers like

Modern amenities: Full bathroom access at most cabin locations. Cedar Creek RV Park provides "Nice clean laundry and restrooms. Good base for exploring Black Canyon NP," according to Daniel S. Their cabin rentals include access to shower facilities and laundry services throughout your stay.

Spacious cabins: Room for families at Meadows of San Juan Resort where "We rent a tiny cabin when we come and it's always clean and has everything we need. I love seeing the stars at night and being able to bring our dog," writes Carla F. Their cabins include basic furnishings with refrigerators and some cooking equipment.

Covered picnic areas: Weather protection at Dakota Terraces Campground where "Most sites have a covered picnic table which was very helpful during the frequent light rain showers," notes Kristin K. The campground offers both basic and upgraded cabin options with varying levels of amenities.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Book early May-September when most cabin rentals fill completely. At KOA Montrose RV Resort, one visitor noted "Folks were friendly but cabin was dated. AC didn't work." Booking early gives access to the best cabin options rather than last-minute accommodations.

Seasonal maintenance: Variable conditions depending on time of year. Valley Sunset RV Ranch features cabins with "WiFi, 3 bars on sprint, 3 bars on Verizon. Propane fill up on site, full hook ups with cable," according to Dan C., though availability changes seasonally.

Supply requirements: Most cabins need linens and basic necessities. Four Seasons River Inn provides cabins but as Prof K. notes, expect "decent restroom/shower facilities that seem to be getting an upgrade," rather than in-cabin bathrooms. Pack sheets, pillows, towels and toiletries for most cabin rentals.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Multiple play areas at many cabin locations. At Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA, "The pool and playground were clean," according to Samantha B., providing entertainment options directly at your cabin site without additional travel.

Cabin location selection: Consider specific needs when booking. At Uncompaghre River Resort, Lisa A. noted, "The spots are level concrete pad with full hook up. Most spots have shade and space between on the outer ring is about 10 feet each side." Request cabins with appropriate spacing if traveling with children who need room to play.

Swimming options: Seasonal beach access at Ridgway State Park cabins where Bob M. highlighted the "Beautiful swimming beach, plenty of hiking trails. Restrooms were always clean." The park maintains a designated swimming area with gradual entry points suitable for children.

Tips from RVers

Kitchen considerations: Variable cooking facilities in cabin rentals. At Four Seasons River Inn, a visitor noted the cabins offer "Good sites, not too crowded (but can get real full of folks), decent restroom/shower facilities," but minimal in-cabin cooking equipment. Bring compact cooking tools if planning meals inside.

Extended stays: Weekly rate options available at several locations. Cedar Creek RV Park provides "a good number of riverside spots, which are delightful. Lots of trees, and dense but not too dense packing," according to Henry K., with discounted weekly rates for longer cabin stays.

Heating systems: Seasonal temperature variations require planning. Riverbend RV Park maintains cabins where Mary F. stated, "Such a peaceful campground during shoulder season," but notes temperature changes can be significant. Many cabins include basic heating options but verify before booking during spring or fall visits.
