Best RV Parks & Resorts near Moffat, CO

Several RV parks serve the San Luis Valley near Moffat, Colorado. Sand Dunes Recreation provides full-hookup sites for large motorhomes with water, sewer, and electric connections, plus an on-site natural hot spring pool. Cool Sunshine RV Park in Alamosa offers 50-amp electrical service with level gravel pads suitable for big rigs. Bighorn Park accommodates larger RVs with full hookups and concrete pads approximately 30 minutes from Moffat. The RV overflow area at Sand Dunes Recreation provides more spacious sites with mountain views compared to the standard camping area. "We stayed in site 16 overflow tent on Wednesday, and it was great out there. I'm so glad we didn't go for the regular tent, because the views are all blocked by shrubs!"

Most RV parks in the region maintain year-round availability, though facilities like Monarch Spur RV Park operate seasonally from May through November. Dump stations are available at Sand Dunes Recreation ($8 plus tax), with coin-operated showers and laundry facilities on-site. Cell service varies throughout the valley, with stronger signals near larger towns like Alamosa and Salida. Pet-friendly policies are standard at most parks, though some maintain restrictions on certain breeds or number of animals. Many RVs require leveling blocks on the gravel sites. During peak summer months when visitors flock to Great Sand Dunes National Park, advance reservations are strongly recommended as parks fill quickly, particularly those closest to popular attractions.

    Aspen Acres Campground

    Well maintained & staffed

This was a delightful experience for us. There are sites for every type of camper: tent, trailer, RV, glamping and cabins. This is a somewhat small but well maintained private campground with lots of simple amenities. All is the wooded back-in sites have full hook-ups (30A) and there are pull-thru sites (Ithink they are still 30A). The center wooded area is perfect for tents. A small dog park gave our girls the chance to run free for a little. There is a shower house with bathrooms that are well maintained. Trash is kept tidy and didn’t smell even on the 97 degree day. Very easy to access but no road noise (at least not at our site).

We have a 26’ trailer and stayed in site 18. It was near the end of the row and relatively quiet. We only wish we had a longer power cable. (Our next purchase!) Our port is at the back and the outlet was way up front. To reach, we had to set up near the front of the site which limited our parking. Just pointing that out for others who might be ill prepared too.

We were too far away to take advantage of WiFi which is fine, we just wandered up near the office to check our texts once daily. It might be more accessible if you are located closer to the office. No cell service for Verizon. Personally, I was happy to be unplugged for a couple of days!

Although we had a fire ban in effect, we were able to rent a propane fire pit from the office. Be super cautious and check fire restrictions for Custer County. (http://oem.custercountygov.com/firecon.htm)

Aspen Acres has a lot more staff than I expected and they patrolled frequently. Very helpful and friendly.

5 minutes from Bishops Castle and 10 minutes from Lake Isabel ($7 day use fee). Easy drive up from I-25 but fairly steep in spots if that is problematic.

    We will stay again!

    Salida RV Resort

Very nice new RV park. Right on the Arkansas River, great mountain views.

Very clean, large level spots with gravel and plenty of room in between RVs.  Great location, close to Salida and hiking & biking trails.  Directly on the Arkansas River -- river view spots are very nice and all spots have a view of the mountains, there's a bit of road noise from nearby highway.  Friendly staff, nice clubhouse with showers, pool table & fitness center, there's a small dog park and pickleball courts.  Direct access to Arkansas River for kayaks and small boats (walk down to river, can't drive there).  Campground internet was spotty but cell service is great so internet is very good if you have a hot spot.  Highly recommended, my only complaint is there's no pool or hot tub.

    Del Norte City Park

    Only One Night Stay Allowed

This is an interesting spot to stay the night. It is right on the river and there are 1-5 sites with a playground, bathrooms, bbq pit, and a dump station. I'm not sure who takes care of this park but they have done a great job!

It is not pet friendly so keep them on a leash and walk them off property.

It is a free site but you can only stay 1 night max. It is not for tents but it will fit RV's and campervans just fine. Maximum RV length is 35 feet.

The best thing about this site is that it is within walking distance of Three Barrel Brewing Company! Excellent beer and a legit pizza oven!

    Raspberry Gulch Dispersed Site

    Beautiful views

It is gorgeous and so easy to access. From the 285 going north turn left on County road 270 until it becomes the 272 we went straight to the 274. At the cross of 2 National Forests, San Isabel and pike . We arrived around 5 pm on a Wednesday and most of the spots were taken but we were able to find one to fit our 40 feet toy hauler. We went for a hike, there were multiple hiking trails including access to the Colorado Trail. We also rode our mountain bikes on 272, 274A and the 273. It was very quiet and the sky was amazing at night. I highly recommend it if you are traveling on the 285.

    Alamosa KOA

    Friendly, Beautiful KOA in Alamosa

The Alamosa KOA was chosen by our family because we like to have the option for swimming at the end of a hard day of play in the National Parks. We made our reservation for our site in March, a mere three months before our mid-week, June 7 arrival.

This KOA has a nice sized heated, outdoor pool with reasonable hours, closing around 8:00 PM. The pool temperature was warm enough for even the adults to slip right into it. There is also a fantastic playground with updated equipment, including an elevated tunnel system that ends with safety slides. When you have a small child who loves to play, especially a special needs child, this is a big deal! Other amenities include showers and laundry facilities (we did not use either but they looked nice). Wi-Fi is advertised, and the signal is available, but was not even fast or reliable enough to load photos from Instagram or Twitter. Streaming would be out of the question, but it would probably suffice for checking email.

One of the more unique benefits offered at this KOA include on-site Hunt Brothers Pizza and breadsticks. Not only can you get hot, fresh pizza here, made to order, but they will deliver it to your site! In addition, they deliver wood and ice. This site also offers a weekend pancake breakfast (seasonal).

The RV sites were leveled very well, and they have both 30-amp and 50-amp sites available. There are small shade trees scattered throughout the camping area, but they are still quite young and small. I read some previous reviews that felt the sites were too close together. Although there was little privacy, we have certainly had less room between sites than we had in Alamosa. Perhaps with slide-outs it might be more compact, but our little Starcraft fit in just fine. In addition to RV sites, there are tent sites and camping cabins available.

Our take-away from Alamosa KOA: The view from the campsite and the kindness and helpfulness of the hosts, the Martin family, make this a return-trip campground for sure! Any questions for us about this site? Leave them in the comments below!

    Alamosa

    Secluded and clean

Beautiful spot, shared with one other truck a few spots away. Clean enough portapotty. Fire rings and picnic tables at every spot. Gravel road from both directions is choppy but ok. Can only go up to 30mph without bouncing too much. Worth it. Tent and pull through spots. No cell service.

    Mosca Campground

    Nicely planned campground

Mosca was located inside the San Juan Wildlife Refuge, close to Sand Dunes National Park. Loop A has power, loop B was closed for the season, all covered picnic tables to protect from prevailing wind and sunlight in the summer, fire rings, basketball court and toilets with handicap accessibility available. Loop C was open. Dumpsters and dump station available. 2 bars of T-Mobile with LTE

Guide to Moffat

Dispersed camping opportunities near Moffat, Colorado offer campers access to mountain terrain at elevations between 7,500-9,000 feet. The San Luis Valley region typically experiences dry conditions with temperature swings of 30-40 degrees between day and night. Winter camping requires four-season gear due to nighttime temperatures that regularly drop below freezing from November through April.

What to do

Hot springs soaking: $15 for day use at Sand Dunes Recreation, where campers receive half-price admission. "The pools are artesian hot springs. The pools are extremely kid friendly, and there are greenhouses with 21+ soaking and bar," notes Elizabeth H.

Fishing: Multiple access points along the Rio Grande River at Woods & River RV Park provide trout fishing opportunities. "The fishing was awesome. The Rio Grande flows by and so do the trout. When we were there, fishing was free every 1st weekend of the month," reports Yvonne M.

Wildlife viewing: Early morning or evening offers best chance to spot native species. "We spotted big horn sheep on the cliff behind us! The park also had a live singer entertain one night!" writes Melody M. about her experience at Bighorn Park.

What campers like

Overflow camping areas: Less crowded and often provide better scenery than standard sites. "We were in overflow camping and were treated to some amazing sunsets on the Sand Dunes. There are berms around the regular tent camping that limit your views," explains Andrew B.

Natural hot water: All water sources at Sand Dunes Recreation come from thermal springs. "All the water on site comes out hot which was great for our chilly visit yet may not be as nice in the hotter months," says Andrew B.

Mountain views: Several parks position sites to maximize scenery. "We had a great tent spot up on the hill with a great view of the valley behind. So it was a quiet tent spot to ourself, but 30 seconds down the hill for access to the amazing restroom and showers!" shares Lance H. about his stay at Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins.

What you should know

Train noise: Several parks in Alamosa are located near active rail lines. "Nice except for the trains. Nice people, nice place, very clean. Only issues are the active train tracks right next to the park and the narrow spaces," warns Michael M. about Cool Sunshine RV Park.

Limited bathroom facilities: Some parks maintain minimal facilities during busy periods. "There is only one stall with a toilet that always seemed to be monopolized by someone taking a shower," notes Katie H. about Woods & River RV Park.

Seasonal operations: Many rv parks near Moffat, Colorado close during winter months. Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground operates from "May 1 to November 1" according to their listing information, typical of higher elevation campgrounds in the area.

Elevation effects: Higher altitude campgrounds require appropriate gear. "High altitude means cool to cold nights. Gorgeous area and park!" advises Eddie B. about Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Select campgrounds with dedicated children's areas. "The playground was very kid friendly and the giant jumping pillow was super fun!" reports a camper named mich about their experience at Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins.

River accessibility: Look for campsites with gentle water access. "Trail and gazebos for a very relaxing and restful stay! Very large relaxing and clean laundry room ($1.50 each load washer and dryer)," describes Ted A. about his month-long stay at Woods & River RV Park.

Pool facilities: Several Moffat area rv parks feature swimming options. "The main attraction of this place for families has to be the pool, which also has a basic restaurant with grill food that's reasonably priced," writes Daniel B.

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement: Check location of utilities before parking. "Hookups are new but all seem to be placed too far up which requires you to pull your trailer to the end of the site to align hookups; otherwise you will need to run lengths of sewer and electric to connect," advises Ted A.

Leveling requirements: Bring blocks for uneven sites. "Our site was incredibly long but a bit skinny but did the trick. You can hear the river running almost everywhere in the park," shares Matt S. about his stay at Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground.

Satellite reception: Tree coverage varies significantly between parks. "There are pull through down center of park. No pool. But two horse shoes pits, corn holes boards, some game called GA-GA pit," explains Craig & Linda L. about Cool Sunshine RV Park.
