    BLM #174 Road Dispersed Camping

    Best Spot in Fruita

I’ve been coming to 18 road for years, but this is the first year with a camper (19 feet). Very spaced out, easy to get away from others if you want peace, right by excellent mountain biking, and pretty close to town. With a cell service extender and a hotspot both my partner and I were able to work remotely from here.

Island Acres Section Camping — James M. Robb Colorado River State Park

    Spacious State Park

Overnight stay. Nice park park like setting with all the necessary amenities. Very flat concrete site with picnic table and canopy, fire ring, and gravel sitting area. 30 amp electric and water worked great. Excellent Verizon service as well. Nice view of distant mountains. We did occasionally hear a train in the distance, but it did not affect our sleep. Would stay again.

South Rim Campground — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

    Winter camping!

We stayed in the winter off season in Loop A, since it’s the only loop open. They plow Loop A and all pull through sites. There was no fee for the campsite, just the park entrance fee. There’s no power in this loop and there’s no water since it’s shut off in the winter. There are pit toilets which are pretty clean for pit toilets. There were a few campers but they were spread so far apart since everyone needed pull through sites cause it snowed a lot recently. Some places the snow is up to your thighs and some places it’s up to your waist.

Even without amenities, we were happy a campground was open in the Colorado winter.

[Internet. Verizon via iPhone has no signal. However, with our booster Nighthawk MR-1100 - 25 mbps down and 1 mbps up with 200 ping.]

    Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA

    Efficient and clean

After driving 4-10 hour days from Canada in our 16’ travel trailer, staying at Harvest Hosts, we decided to stop here to prep and regroup for the next leg of our journey. Full hook ups allowed us to flush our water systems, recharge all batteries and devices, and wait out some seriously nasty wind, like lift the trailer right off the ground wind (well felt like it I swear!). The place is super clean, easy to access, has great views and a helpful staff. Pet friendly with a small off-leash dog area even. Looks good for families too with a pool and water park, playground. Wifi was good and cell service at 2 bars. Not cheap but easy access to supplies and touristy spots.

    Kebler Corner

    Would happily visit again!

We stayed in a camper van over a busy holiday and loved it! We were hoping for a peaceful getaway for us and our dog and found it at Kebler. Yes, some of the spaces are close together but everyone there made it work well. The angled spots and strategic landscaping help too. Plenty of grassy common areas to stretch your legs and your pup’s (on leash), so much so we didn’t feel like we missed out on anything by not being parked with the big coaches along the river. Even better since the large river spots had little/no natural shade (most seemed to have their own awnings that our van didn’t so no worries there I think for them). The tent spots were in a different area on the other side of the property a little away from the busier parts. They also had less shade but had level pads and but seemed closer to the bridge (and hiking). The community vibe was respectful and friendly and it was lovely to stroll about and enjoy it all. Families were out and about, playing with their children and trying different things to do. There was a little playground and some activities in a covered space like velcro axe throwing and corn hole. There were soccer goals set up at one of the grassy areas too. There was also a frisbee golf course, hammocks and picnic tables scattered around the property. A sign by the bathrooms invited camp guests to go gentle group hike if you meet at the bridge at the posted time in the morning. The general store was open during the day and had more than I expected (came for stickers and snacks, left with a game of Bananagrams and more). There wasn’t cell service but wifi worked well for what we needed. The bathrooms were clean and the water was warm. On a busy weekend you might need to use the portable toilets near the tent sites if the regular ones are occupied at a busy time. In the future, splitting the shower and toilet facilities might help with that long term, but I am not sure how hard (and expensive) that is to do in places that are tucked away into the mountains like this. We did use the coin laundry and that worked well. At the time of our visit it was $2 for the washer and $3.50 for the dryer. There was a variety of cute cabins for rent with a good range in size and cost - and some have own their bathroom and even little patio spaces. The hosts and staff were friendly and helpful, even doing trash pickup in the morning if you left it out at a certain time by your site. Kebler is in a beautiful setting, has thoughtfully-designed spaces and is carefully maintained. We would definitely come back - hopefully in a camper van / travel trailer or even just to stay in one of the cabins.

Fruita Section Camping — James M. Robb Colorado River State Park

    Perfect spot for Colorado NM

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Regional/Public Park — Grounds that are on public lands, and have a cost for entry and/or overnight stay. Ratings for this category are based on: Cost: 5 Allure of the park/lands: 4 Amenities as available (bathrooms, showers, hookups, etc): 5 Layout and privacy of sites: 5

We have come to love camping in state parks. This park fits the bill of our now high expectations. Reasonable cost ($30 for electric & water + State Park fees), good layout with nice privacy, clean facilities (laundry, bathrooms, Rec rooms) and easy access.

It’s about 15 minutes from Main Street in Grand Junction and very close to groceries, gas and restaurants. It is right off a main highway and has some ambient road noise but the biggest disturbance is the trains that come by around 11pm and blare the horns. We experienced it both nights, but after that... peaceful. We enjoyed the stars one night, but the glowing Taco Bell sign across the street was a little imposing. All good. The park is right at the bottom of the foothills to Colorado National Monument... less than 3 miles to the entrance station. It’s also right along the River Trail for cycling and walking/running.

Each site is paved and level with a large gravel area with a shaded structure, picnic bench and fire pit. The roads are wide and very easy to navigate to your site. It’s a popular park for camping, so make reservations.

Saddlehorn Campground — Colorado National Monument

Great base for exploring the Colorado Nat'l Monument

This campground is near the visitor center just off the rim road, about a 25 mile road from one entrance to the other. There are several hiking trails for exploring the Colorado National Monument; you could keep busy for a couple days or more, depending on how much you enjoy hiking. There is also rock climbing.

    The campground has 3 loops:

    • A: no reservations, open year round

    • B: reservations and walkup. If you have a reservation, your site will have a "Reserved" sign along with dates and your last name. No check in is required. Open sites have an "Open" sign.

    • C: doesn't show up on recreation.gov so it looks like it is also walkup. I think groups can reserve it. There are tent pads which I didn't see in A and B (but you can pitch a tent in A and B). Only tents and truck campers are allowed, and no generators are allowed in loop C.

Bathrooms seem fairly new with auto flush toilets, motion sensor faucets and hand dryers. There is potable water at various locations clearly marked with a "water" sign. No electric, water or sewer at sites.

There are a few "driveway" styles in loops A and B: back in/pull in, pull alongside and pull through. Picnic tables and grills are back among juniper and pine trees, and you can pitch a tent. I would stay in loop C if I had a tent...very nice sites.

And the views are beautiful, especially at sunset.

    Palisade Basecamp RV Resort

    Wow! Love this camping spot

Can’t say enough about this camp spot. Wow!! Pull throughs ... back ends available. Fabulous service from the owners. We planned on staying 2 nights but ended up staying a few more days. Dog park, showers, laundry faculties, full hookups, general store, art, great WiFi (we had Verizon) ... and some sites are backed up to the Colorado River. Just amazing .... very clean. Would highly recommend!

Guide to Mesa Lakes

RV camping near Mesa Lakes, Colorado offers access to several facilities with varying amenities and proximity to the Grand Mesa's natural attractions. Most campgrounds in this region sit at elevations between 6,000-8,000 feet, with temperatures ranging from 40°F at night to 80°F during summer days. Water conservation becomes essential during late summer when some facilities implement usage restrictions.

What to do

Hiking near Colorado River access: Palisade Basecamp RV Resort provides convenient river access for those looking to combine water activities with hiking. "There is a trail that goes around the park too. Up until recently the Colorado River has been too low to fish but I imagine fishing is about to get better now that it's really flowing," notes a visitor to the park.

Wine tasting excursions: With numerous vineyards surrounding Palisade, RV campers can explore local wineries. "Vineyards all around, a local brewery, tent sites on the Colorado river. The winery next door (colterris) is awesome. Small family owned great atmosphere," shares a Palisade Basecamp guest.

Mountain biking from camp: Riverbend RV Park offers direct trail connections. "Beautiful location next to the Fort Umcompahgre River with easy access to trails for biking. The sites and grounds are well maintained and large," explains a Riverbend RV Park & Cabins reviewer.

What campers like

Riverside camping spots: Several parks feature sites alongside water. "The campground is situated below the road keeping road noise low. The entrance is at a busy location on the highway and steep so take care while entering. We had a nice site within eyeshot of the river," notes a visitor to Four Seasons River Inn & RV Park.

Clean, spacious bathhouses: Newer facilities receive consistent praise for their maintenance. "The bathhouse is heated and in pristine condition. On property their is a very lovely peach orchard, a dog run, and river access which would be ideal for the summer months," mentions a Palisade Basecamp guest.

Amenities for extended stays: Canyon View offers features conducive to longer visits. "The grounds are nicely landscaped with bushes and trees. There is a pool, dog runs, laundry, play area, and pickleball courts. There is some traffic noise but not too bad - it is a city location after all," explains a Canyon View RV Resort visitor.

What you should know

Cell service variability: Connectivity changes with elevation and location. "The WiFi was fair with speeds of around 0.5 MB/s. AT&T coverage was good, with 2-4 Bars of LTE service and speeds up to about 6 MB/s," reports a Canyon View guest.

Traffic noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some parks. "It is close to I-70 and the road noise is quite noticeable if you're outside," notes a Canyon View camper, while another adds, "You could hear some interstate noise but not enough to keep you awake."

Sloped tent sites: Some parks have uneven terrain for tent camping. "Stellar amenities, electricity at every pad, great showers, easy and very close river access. Really great spot but prepare to roll. All of the tent pads seem to be at a pretty wicked slope, including ours," warns a Palisade visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly facilities: Many parks accommodate pets but have specific rules. "The dog run areas is just weeds and a culvert that doesn't drain, so beware if you have water/mud loving dogs," cautions a visitor at Canyon View, while another notes, "It's very pet friendly and even have small pet runs in some sites which we got. Nice dog park too."

Playground availability: Some parks offer dedicated children's areas. "There is a playground for kids and a splash pad that was working," mentions a Junction West Grand Junction guest.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Natural settings provide educational experiences. "The river and pond are were very nice to sit by and observe nature. The Canada geese families were fun to watch," shares a Riverbend visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site sizing considerations: Parks vary in their ability to accommodate larger rigs. "River riverside spots, which are delightful. Lots of trees, and dense but not too dense packing," notes a Palisade visitor, while a Four Seasons camper mentions, "Pretty campground with grass at the sites, a river a short walk away (there's a good portion of the campground with riverside sites, but limited for larger rigs)."

Hookup reliability: Electric service varies between locations. "Nice size sights. Gravel lots. Do hear a bit of traffic noise from highway when close to front gate. River sights look nicer," shares a Shady Creek RV Park guest.

Leveling needs: Terrain affects parking ease at several sites. "Sites at River Bend are gravel and level. Great patio and table," reports a visitor, while others recommend bringing extra leveling blocks for sites near Palisade.
