Nine Mile Hill

Bouldering enthusiasts and rock climbers will find Nine Mile Hill offers direct access to climbing routes along with dispersed camping on BLM land near Whitewater. The dirt access road deteriorates quickly, prompting many campers to claim spots near the entrance rather than venture deeper into the canyon.

Multiple campers report hearing highway noise from nearby Route 141, though several note it diminishes significantly at night. The dispersed sites spread across the area, with camping options both left and right of the main access point. "Sites are nice and spread," observes Noelle G., who found the highway noise less problematic than expected. Water flows through the canyon bottom, creating an audible backdrop that echoes up to the camping areas.

Road conditions vary considerably depending on how far campers venture from the entrance. High-clearance vehicles handle the terrain better, while standard cars may struggle on the rougher sections. Some visitors recommend scouting sites during daylight hours rather than arriving after dark. Rock leveling may be necessary for RVs and trailers on the uneven terrain.

The area attracts climbers drawn to the bouldering opportunities and cliff bands, though routes to the hilltop require mountaineering skills due to loose rock and technical sections. Fire restrictions apply seasonally, limiting campfire availability during certain periods. Cell service proves spotty but generally functional for basic communication needs.

Campers seeking additional dispersed options can explore BLM Dispersed off Highway 141 — Grand Junction just north of this location. Plan to arrive with sufficient water and supplies, as Grand Junction sits about 30 minutes away for resupply runs.

Guests frequently mentioned the stunning canyon views and well-spaced sites with easy highway access. Numerous guests pointed out the primitive nature (no facilities) and road conditions requiring higher clearance vehicles for some spots.

Great spot for a stopover

Only two other campers, very spaced out. Little bit of noise from the road but by 2300 was dead quiet.

Tent camped and watched the Milky Way roll overhead.

Easy going, fun, free

I brought my dog up there yesterday. We car camped overnight without any issues. Only saw a couple of cars, and one group camped 3/4 mile from me. I had a lovely time checking out the bouldering and climbing. While there we couldn't find a clean or easy route to the top of the hill, it made for an interesting charge over loose impediments and various cliff bands. If you go this route, I recommend hiking boots and a pretty good level of mountaineering ability as you could potentially slip or get in a tough cliff band.

Only bummer is that there is no burn season right now (mid-August), so we just enjoyed the night sky.

Good Spot

This was a nice spot to stop on our way to Utah in our Airstream Basecamp. The road is dirt and gets real bumpy real fast so we found a spot right at the front. There were only a few other people there near us despite it being 6:30pm on Memorial Day Weekend. It is close to the road so you do hear some road noise. To avoid it I’d go further down the road if you’re able. Spots to the left and right when you turn into the area. Watch for broken glass around the fire pits. Humans being humans unfortunately. Gorgeous views. Nights are really pretty.

Beautiful

This spot is beautiful. No cell service. The hiking is amazing. Quiet and peaceful. There were a few other campers but none within 200 meters of me so relatively private

Nice, Beautiful, Close to Grand Junction

We enjoyed this spot! Easy to get to and only about 30 minutes or so away from Grand Junction. We were able to get our T@G trailer to a good spot, but the road to the different camping areas can be a bit rocky. Great weather in May, very comfortable boondocking. Closer to the road and other campers around, but surprisingly quiet. Beautiful in the evening and in the morning.

A little windy and some small presence of trash but overall a very beautiful place! Accessable with 2wd Sedan

Great Views, Secluded

Found this spot and was very happy with the setup. Like other reviews, the highway noise was a bit loud but nothing too crazy, especially really late. There were other campers spread out nicely, you wouldn’t even know they were there. The road is a bit iffy so snagging a spot at the front would be best if you don’t have 4WD (my Nissan car struggled, we had to back up & turn around). Overall great spot for tent camping! Remember to leave no trace 🫶🏼🏕️🌎

Perfect off the highway spot!

Stayed one night on the way to Colorado. Super easy to find right off the highway and plenty of spots. I was the only one there when I stayed. Highway noise isn’t too much of an issue but I did have some loud and strong winds all night.

Definitely a gem

This is a great canyon to camp in with Grand Junction just a short drive away. Some spots are best reached with a AWD or 4WD vehicle, and the road is right there. We were a bit worried about the noise the first day but it wasn't bad. STUNNING views, sites are nice and spread…definitely a winner. The video featured is from the creek just 5 mins down the road.

Many spots, good ones go fast

  • came late at night, 10pm, was able to find a spot
  • drove a high clearance 4x4 and the spot I was in needed AWD at minimum, sedans will get banged up
  • spot was decent but awful leveling
  • plenty of rocks to level 4x4 with RTT but still slept angled
  • very quiet even though close to the road and few cars/vehicles at night
  • would recommend coming before nightfall, site is much larger than I thought during the day
  • cell service spotty but serviceable

Not the best spot I’ve ever had but will do when you need a place to sleep

Awesome view

We arrived late which made the sites/pull offs hard to identify. You can hear passing trucks off 141 now and then but it’s nothing obnoxious. Woke up to see the spectacular views.

Amazing place to spend the night just off the highway. Really calm and great view down into the valley. Also lots of space in between sites.

Scenic Views

We found this site on The Dyrt. It is right off the highway. The traffic was very little after 9:00. We were the only ones there. The views of the sunset and sunrise were amazing. It was very windy so we did not do a fire. There were fire rings at the camp sites.

Beautiful & Easy Access

I found/chose this campsite based on Dyrt reviews. It was easy to access off the main road and there were plenty of campsites available when I rolled in right before sunset Friday evening June 9th 2023. There were only two other campers within sight that night and we were fairly spread out. The view over the canyon were beautiful and the sound of the water flowing along the bottom echoed up to the campsite. Would easily stay here again.
